What does holding USDC let you do?

USDC is a dollar-linked token. Holding it can give you a way to keep value on a blockchain without taking the same price swings as many cryptocurrencies. People use it to move funds between crypto platforms, trade against other tokens, make payments where it is accepted, or interact with lending and other decentralized-finance apps.

USDC is not a bank deposit, and holding it does not automatically earn interest. A platform or DeFi app may offer yield, but that is a separate arrangement with its own risks; returns are not guaranteed by the token itself. USDC aims to stay near one U.S. dollar, but the market price can move above or below that level. It is best understood as a digital dollar substitute for crypto activity, not as a guaranteed way to preserve purchasing power or a claim on a personal bank account.

Which USDC network and wallet should you use?

USDC is available on many networks, including Ethereum, Solana, Avalanche, Base, Arbitrum, Optimism, Polygon, Stellar, Sui, and others. The supported network list is broad and can change, so check the current options in the wallet or service you plan to use. A token on one chain is not automatically usable on another.

Choose a wallet that supports both USDC and the specific network where your tokens are held. Before receiving or sending funds, confirm the network and token address with the recipient or platform. Some wallets display bridged versions alongside native USDC; those versions can depend on a bridge or other issuer and may carry different risks. Your recovery phrase or private keys control access to self-custodied USDC, so keep them offline and private. If you use a hosted exchange or custodial wallet, the provider controls the keys and its account access and withdrawal rules apply.

How does USDC keep its dollar target?

USDC is designed to be redeemable one-for-one for U.S. dollars through its issuer, Circle, subject to Circle’s eligibility requirements and terms. Reserves backing USDC have generally included cash and short-term U.S. government securities, with reserve information published by Circle. A dollar peg is a target, not a promise that every exchange will always quote exactly $1 or that every holder can redeem directly at any time.

USDC supply has no fixed maximum. Tokens are generally issued or removed as demand for issuance and redemption changes. The reported circulating supply was about 70.5 billion USDC as of 2026-11-08; supply can change, so treat that as a dated estimate, not a cap. The market price was about $1.00 on that date. Market trading, redemption access, confidence in reserves, and wider market stress can all affect how closely the token tracks a dollar.

How can you get and store USDC?

You can generally get USDC through a crypto exchange, a supported payment service, a peer-to-peer transfer, or an eligible direct issuance or redemption service. Each route has different account, identity-check, payment, and withdrawal requirements. Check the provider’s terms and the exact network it supports before moving funds; the same ticker can appear on several chains.

For self-custody, send a small test amount when you are unsure about the address or network, then verify that it arrived before sending more. Keep enough of the network’s native token to pay transaction fees. For hosted custody, check withdrawal availability, limits, and account protections. Do not share your recovery phrase or sign a wallet transaction you do not understand. A service promising unusually high returns for simply holding USDC is not part of the token’s dollar peg and deserves separate scrutiny.

What can a USDC transfer cost?

A USDC transfer usually incurs the blockchain network’s transaction fee, not a single universal USDC fee. The amount depends on the chain, congestion, and transaction type; on some networks it can be small, while a busy network or complex DeFi interaction can cost more. Fees are commonly paid in that network’s native token, so holding USDC alone may not be enough to send it.

Moving USDC between chains can add another cost. A bridge or cross-chain service may charge fees, and the source and destination networks can each require a transaction. Exchange withdrawals may have their own charges or minimums. Check the displayed fee and the destination chain before confirming. A cheaper route is not automatically safer: bridges and cross-chain services can introduce smart-contract, liquidity, or operational risks, and sending to an unsupported network or address can make funds difficult or impossible to recover.

What could go wrong while you hold USDC?

USDC can lose its peg temporarily if market stress, redemption bottlenecks, reserve concerns, or problems at a banking or service provider undermine confidence. The issuer and its systems are also a point of dependence: freezes, compliance actions, or technical issues can affect particular addresses or transfers. Direct redemption may not be available to every holder, and USDC is not insured like a bank deposit.

You also face ordinary crypto risks. A mistaken network or address can strand a transfer; a fake token can use the USDC name; and a compromised wallet can lose its funds. DeFi deposits add smart-contract and liquidation risks, while bridges add another layer of exposure. Before using USDC, check that the token contract and network match the service you intend to use, understand who holds the keys, and consider whether you can tolerate delays or loss. A stablecoin can reduce price volatility, but it does not remove risk.

What does USDC’s history tell you?

USDC was introduced in 2018 as a dollar-backed stablecoin associated with Circle and the Centre consortium. Its purpose was to let people and businesses transfer dollar-denominated value on blockchain networks and use it in crypto markets without converting back to traditional payment rails for every transaction. Over time, USDC has become available across a growing range of chains.

Its history also shows why a peg should not be treated as absolute. The recorded market high was about $1.043 on 2018-11-14, and the recorded low was about $0.878 on 2023-03-11. Those are past market prices, not indications of what USDC will do next. As with other stablecoins, its practical value depends on the issuer’s ability to maintain reserves and redemption access, as well as market confidence and the networks and services through which you use it.

USDC in numbers

USDC (USDC) is ranked #6 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $70.5B and a price of $0.9996 as of Nov 8, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation ($70.5B) is close to its market cap, so little new supply is still to come.

The price was down 0.0% over 7 days, down 0.0% over 30 days, down 0.0% over the past year. It trades about 4% below its all-time high of $1.04, set on Nov 14, 2018.

About 70.51B USDC are in circulation. No hard maximum supply is listed, so new tokens can still be issued.

24-hour trading volume was about $4.63B, or 6.6% of its market cap: moderate turnover.

USDC has token contracts on 33 chains we track, including Ethereum, Starknet, Plasma, XRP Ledger. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.

USDC FAQs

Is USDC always worth exactly $1?

USDC aims to be worth one U.S. dollar, but market prices can move above or below that level. The peg depends on confidence in reserves, redemption access, and market conditions.

Can I send USDC between different blockchains?

No. USDC is available on multiple blockchains, and a token on one network may not work on another. Confirm the exact network and token before sending or receiving it.

Do you need ETH or another token to send USDC?

A USDC transfer generally requires the native token of its blockchain to pay the network fee. The fee varies with the network and its congestion, and an exchange or bridge may add separate charges.

Does holding USDC earn interest?

Not by itself. USDC is designed to track the U.S. dollar and does not automatically pay interest. Yield offered by a platform or DeFi app is separate and carries additional risks.

Is USDC insured or risk-free?

USDC is not a bank deposit and is not insured like one. It can lose its peg, and access can be affected by issuer, platform, wallet, or blockchain problems.

What is the market cap of USDC?

As of Nov 8, 2026, USDC had a market cap of about $70.5B, ranking #6 among cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation. Market cap is price multiplied by circulating supply, so it moves with the price.

What is the all-time high of USDC?

USDC's all-time high is $1.04, reached on Nov 14, 2018. Its all-time low is $0.8776 (Mar 11, 2023). Past prices say nothing about future returns.

What is the circulating supply of USDC?

As of Nov 8, 2026, about 70.51B USDC were in circulation; no fixed maximum supply is listed.

Which blockchains is USDC on?

It has token contracts on Ethereum, Starknet, Plasma, XRP Ledger, Arc, Sonic, Algorand, Hedera and 25 more.
