## What does holding DAI give you?

DAI is a stablecoin designed to stay near one U.S. dollar. Holding it can make it easier to keep a dollar-like value on a crypto network, send value to another wallet, or use compatible decentralized-finance services without first converting to a volatile crypto asset. Its target is not a promise: the market price can move above or below $1.

DAI is associated with Maker Protocol, whose Multi-Collateral Dai system allows DAI to be generated against multiple types of collateral. That distinguishes it from a token backed by a single reserve asset, but it does not make DAI risk-free. Its value depends on the protocol’s collateral and mechanisms continuing to function, as well as market confidence.

DAI is not a share in Maker Protocol and does not give you an automatic claim to protocol revenue. If you only need to hold or transfer it, you may not need to interact with a Maker Vault. Using DAI in lending or other DeFi applications adds the risks of those separate services.

## Which networks and wallets support DAI?

DAI is issued on Ethereum and is not the native token of a blockchain. On Ethereum, it is an ERC-20 token, so you need a wallet that supports Ethereum and ERC-20 assets. Before sending DAI, check that the receiving wallet or service supports DAI on the exact network you are using; a token with the same ticker on another network may be a bridged or wrapped version rather than Ethereum DAI.

A self-custody wallet puts control of the funds on you: protect its recovery phrase and confirm the destination address before signing a transfer. A custodial exchange or service holds the assets for you, so access and withdrawals depend on that provider’s rules and availability. In either case, check the token name, network and contract details shown by the wallet or service. Sending tokens to an unsupported network or address can make them difficult or impossible to recover.

If you are considering a non-Ethereum version, check which bridge or issuer created it and what redemption route exists. The Ethereum token and a bridged representation can carry different technical and counterparty risks.

## How does DAI’s supply and dollar target work?

DAI has no fixed maximum supply. As of 2026-11-08, its reported circulating and total supply were both about 4.48 billion DAI. That is a dated snapshot, not a permanent limit: supply can expand or contract as users generate DAI against collateral in Maker Vaults and later repay or otherwise remove it from circulation.

The system’s collateral model is intended to support DAI’s dollar target, but the token is not simply a receipt for one dollar held in a bank account. DAI’s market price is set by buyers and sellers. Demand, confidence in the collateral and protocol, and broader market conditions can all affect whether it trades close to its target. DAI may also trade at a premium or discount during periods of stress.

As of 2026-11-08, DAI’s quoted price was about $1. A displayed price near $1 does not guarantee that you can always exchange one DAI for exactly one dollar, or do so without fees. Supply figures and market prices change, so check current values before relying on them.

## How do people get and store DAI?

People generally obtain DAI through a crypto exchange or by receiving it from another wallet. Some users generate it through Maker Vaults by depositing eligible collateral, but that is a borrowing-style DeFi operation, not a simple purchase: you must understand the collateral requirements, repayment terms and liquidation risk before using a Vault. The specific collateral accepted and protocol settings can change.

For storage, choose either a self-custody Ethereum wallet that supports ERC-20 tokens or a custodial service that explicitly supports DAI withdrawals and deposits on Ethereum. Confirm the network on both sides of a transfer. A service may show several networks under the same token name, and selecting the wrong one can strand your funds.

Keep recovery phrases offline and private if you use self-custody, and check addresses carefully before sending. If you store DAI with a third party, you rely on that provider to safeguard funds and process withdrawals. These are general ways people access and hold DAI, not a recommendation to acquire it.

## What does it cost to move DAI?

Sending DAI on Ethereum requires a network transaction, and the sender generally pays Ethereum gas in ETH—not in DAI. Gas costs vary with network congestion and with the kind of action. A simple transfer is different from approving a token, interacting with a DeFi application or opening and managing a Maker Vault, so there is no single fee that applies to every use.

A wallet or service may also charge its own withdrawal or service fee. Maker Protocol operations can involve protocol-specific costs, which depend on the action and current terms; check those terms before confirming a Vault transaction. Fees shown by an exchange are separate from Ethereum gas.

Moving DAI between networks usually involves a bridge or another cross-chain service. That can add service charges and transactions on one or more networks, each with its own gas cost. Bridging also introduces risks beyond ordinary Ethereum transfers, including smart-contract or service failure and receiving a wrapped representation. Check the destination network, token form and total quoted cost before approving.

## What could go wrong while you hold DAI?

DAI’s main risk is losing its dollar peg. Its price can move away from $1, and there is no guarantee that market trading or protocol mechanisms will restore the target quickly. A temporary depeg can matter if you need to sell or transfer at a particular time.

There are also collateral and protocol risks. A sharp fall in collateral values, failures in Maker Protocol’s contracts or processes, or governance decisions that affect how the system works could weaken confidence or affect DAI’s operation. DAI held in a wallet also faces ordinary crypto risks: lost recovery phrases, mistaken transfers, phishing and malicious transaction approvals. Using a lending app, exchange or bridge adds that service’s own failure and custody risks.

Before using DAI, consider whether you can tolerate a possible loss of value or delayed access. Check the token and network, review permissions before signing, and avoid treating a stablecoin label as a guarantee of principal. DAI is not a bank deposit, and holding it does not by itself provide deposit insurance.

## What is DAI’s history, and has it always stayed at $1?

DAI’s origins go back to 2017, when Maker’s first stablecoin version used a single type of collateral and was known as Single-Collateral Dai, or SAI. Maker later launched Multi-Collateral Dai, expanding the system so DAI could be generated against multiple assets. The DAI described today refers to that multi-collateral system.

DAI has not always traded exactly at $1. Its recorded all-time high was about $1.22 on 2020-03-12, and its recorded low was about $0.88 on 2023-03-10. Those past extremes show that the target is an aim rather than a guaranteed exchange rate; they do not indicate what DAI will do next.

As of 2026-11-08, DAI was quoted at about $1, with around 4.48 billion tokens in circulation. Both supply and market price can change. If your decision depends on a current peg, supply or redemption route, check the live market and the terms of the service you plan to use rather than relying on historical figures.

By the numbers

Dai in numbers

Dai (DAI) is ranked #23 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $4.48B and a price of $1.00 as of Nov 8, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation ($4.48B) is close to its market cap, so little new supply is still to come.

The price was down 0.1% over 7 days, up 0.0% over 30 days, up 0.1% over the past year. It trades about 18% below its all-time high of $1.22, set on Mar 12, 2020.

About 4.48B DAI are in circulation. No hard maximum supply is listed, so new tokens can still be issued.

24-hour trading volume was about $49.1M, or 1.1% of its market cap: low turnover, so large orders can move the price.

DAI has token contracts on Ethereum. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.
