Owning USDT: Uses, Storage and Risks
USDT is a dollar-pegged token used across many blockchains, but its value, redemption access and transfer costs depend on more than the $1 target. Check the network, custody setup and issuer risks before you hold or send it.

What does holding USDT let you do?
USDT is designed to track the U.S. dollar, so holding it gives you a dollar-denominated balance on a blockchain rather than a bank account balance. People commonly use it to move funds between crypto platforms, trade without returning to fiat currency, or send value to someone who can receive USDT. It can also help you avoid some exposure to crypto price swings while you remain in the crypto system.
That does not make USDT identical to cash. Its market price can move above or below $1, and you rely on Tether to manage reserves and meet redemption terms. A platform may also restrict deposits, withdrawals or trading. USDT does not pay interest just because you hold it; any yield offer comes with separate platform or lending risks. Treat it as a privately issued stablecoin, not as a bank deposit or a guarantee that you can always exchange one token for one dollar.
Which USDT network should your wallet use?
USDT is issued on multiple networks, including Ethereum, Celo, Kaia, Solana, TON, Tron, Avalanche, Aptos, Kava, Tezos and Near. The network matters: USDT sent on one chain generally cannot be received at an address or service that supports only another. Before transferring, match the network selected by the sender with the network accepted by the recipient.
Wallet support varies by chain and by token version. Check the wallet’s asset details and confirm that it supports the specific network, not merely the ticker “USDT.” Some services also offer bridged or wrapped versions; these can introduce additional bridge or smart-contract risks and are not necessarily the same as issuer-issued USDT on that chain. Keep a small test transfer in mind when sending to an unfamiliar address, and do not assume a wrong-network transfer can be recovered. A self-custody wallet puts responsibility for backups and access on you; an exchange holds the keys on your behalf.
How do USDT’s supply and dollar peg work?
USDT aims to stay near $1, but the peg is a target, not a promise that every market trade or withdrawal will clear at exactly that price. Tether issues and redeems tokens under its own terms; in general, issuance can increase supply and redemption can reduce it. The ability to redeem directly with the issuer may depend on eligibility, minimums and account requirements, so many holders instead rely on exchanges or other market participants.
As of 2026-11-08, circulating supply was about 177.0 billion USDT and total supply about 182.5 billion; there is no fixed maximum supply. These amounts can change as tokens are issued or removed. Tether says tokens are backed by reserves, but reserve assets, reporting and redemption access are relevant to how that backing works in practice. Check the issuer’s current reserve disclosures and terms rather than assuming every token can be redeemed by every holder on demand.
How can you get and store USDT?
You can typically obtain USDT through a crypto exchange or another person, subject to the service’s rules, payment options and identity checks. Some platforms let customers deposit or withdraw USDT directly; others may support only selected networks or suspend a network temporarily. Check fees, limits and the exact withdrawal network before you rely on a transfer. This is general information, not a recommendation to acquire USDT.
For storage, you can leave tokens with a custodial platform or use a self-custody wallet that supports the correct USDT version. With an exchange, the provider controls the keys and may restrict access. With self-custody, you control the keys but must protect your recovery phrase and device; anyone who obtains the phrase may take the funds. Keep recovery details private and offline, and beware of fake wallet apps, support messages and token airdrops asking you to connect or sign. A displayed USDT balance is not enough: verify the chain and token contract where relevant.
What does it cost to move USDT?
A USDT transfer usually involves a network transaction fee, paid in that network’s native asset rather than in USDT. For example, an Ethereum transfer requires ETH for gas, while a Tron transfer requires the resources or fee mechanism applicable to Tron. The amount can change with network congestion and the service handling the transfer. An exchange may add its own withdrawal charge or set a minimum, so check the final confirmation screen before sending.
Moving USDT between chains is not a simple change of network. A bridge or exchange may be needed, and either can charge fees, impose limits or delay processing. Bridges add smart-contract and operational risks; an exchange transfer means trusting the platform to credit the destination correctly. Compare the total cost and confirm both sides support the same chain and token version. If the recipient gives you a network choice, use only one they explicitly support. Never send a small amount of one network’s USDT to an address expecting another version and assume it will convert automatically.
What could go wrong while you hold USDT?
USDT carries issuer, reserve, market, platform and blockchain risks. The market price can drift from $1, and confidence or liquidity problems can make that drift larger. Reserve disclosures do not remove the possibility of delayed or limited redemption, and USDT is not a deposit insured by a bank. Tether may also have controls that can freeze or block tokens on supported networks, so self-custody does not eliminate issuer-level risk.
You can also lose access through a compromised wallet, a lost recovery phrase, a mistaken network transfer or a platform failure. Before holding or sending a meaningful amount, check current reserve reporting, issuer terms, local rules, the recipient’s network support and the wallet’s security. Be especially cautious with offers promising guaranteed returns on USDT: those returns come from a separate borrower or service, not from the token itself. Keep only the amount you can manage under the risks of your chosen storage method.
What should you know about USDT’s history?
Tether began as Realcoin in 2014 and was renamed Tether later that year. USDT helped establish the idea of a blockchain token intended to represent a fiat currency, and it became widely used on crypto trading platforms as a way to move between markets without settling each trade in bank money. It is now issued across several networks, which gives holders more transfer options but also makes network selection more important.
Its history has also brought recurring scrutiny of reserve backing, disclosures and the relationship between token issuance and redemption. That context matters because USDT is issued by a private company rather than by a central bank. If you hold it, focus less on its long-standing use and more on whether you understand the current redemption terms, reserve reporting, chain version and custody arrangement. The original launch date for each network version can differ, and USDT’s supply and availability on individual chains can change.

USDT FAQs
Is 1 USDT always worth $1?
USDT is designed to track the U.S. dollar, but its market price can move above or below $1. The target does not guarantee that every holder can redeem directly with Tether for exactly one dollar.
Which networks support USDT?
USDT is issued on multiple networks, including Ethereum, Tron, Solana and TON. Choose a wallet and transfer network that both support the same USDT version; the ticker alone is not enough.
Do you need ETH or another token to send USDT?
A USDT transfer normally requires the native asset used for fees on the selected network, such as ETH for Ethereum gas. Exchange withdrawal charges and network congestion can add to the total cost.
Can you redeem USDT directly for dollars?
USDT is issued by Tether, a private company, and is not a bank deposit. Direct redemption depends on Tether’s terms and your eligibility, while most holders rely on exchanges or other markets to trade it.
Can you lose access to USDT in a wallet?
Yes. A lost recovery phrase, compromised wallet, wrong-network transfer, platform restriction or failure can prevent access. USDT can also trade below its intended dollar peg, and issuer-level controls may affect tokens on supported networks.
What is the market cap of Tether?
As of Nov 8, 2026, Tether had a market cap of about $177B, ranking #3 among cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation. Market cap is price multiplied by circulating supply, so it moves with the price.
What is the all-time high of USDT?
Tether's all-time high is $1.32, reached on Jul 23, 2018. Its all-time low is $0.5725 (Mar 1, 2015). Past prices say nothing about future returns.
What is the circulating supply of USDT?
As of Nov 8, 2026, about 177.03B USDT were in circulation; no fixed maximum supply is listed.
Which blockchains is USDT on?
It has token contracts on Ethereum, Celo, Kaia, Solana, TON, Tron, Avalanche, Aptos and 3 more.
