Owning GNO: Uses, Storage and Risks

## What does holding GNO actually let you do?

GNO is Gnosis’s governance and staking token. Holding it can let you participate in GnosisDAO decisions, subject to the DAO’s voting rules, and it is used in the security and validation of Gnosis Chain. Simply keeping GNO in a wallet does not automatically make you a validator or guarantee rewards; staking has its own requirements and risks.

Gnosis also develops products for trading, asset management and payments, including Safe, CoW Protocol and Gnosis Pay. Those products are part of the broader Gnosis ecosystem, but holding GNO does not by itself give you a claim on their revenue, a payment card, or access to every feature. Before you treat GNO as a way to use a specific product, check that product’s current rules and supported networks.

## Which chain is your GNO on?

GNO is issued on Ethereum, Arbitrum and Gnosis Chain, the network formerly associated with xDai. Check the network shown in your wallet or exchange before sending: tokens with the same ticker on different chains are not always interchangeable without a supported bridge or exchange deposit route.

One distinction matters for fees. GNO is used for Gnosis ecosystem governance and staking, but xDAI is the gas token used to pay transaction fees on Gnosis Chain. On Ethereum, transactions generally require ETH for gas; on Arbitrum, ETH is generally used for fees as well. An exchange may show GNO as a Gnosis or xDai ecosystem token, but that does not mean you can pay network fees in GNO. Confirm the destination chain and token contract before making a transfer.

## How much GNO exists, and what can move its value?

GNO has a maximum supply of 3 million tokens. As of 2026-11-08, about 2.64 million were circulating, while total supply was 3 million. The difference between circulating and maximum supply is worth keeping in mind: the cap alone does not tell you when any remaining tokens might enter circulation or how they may be distributed.

GNO’s market value changes with trading demand, broader crypto-market conditions, project use, governance decisions and the perceived value of staking. On 2026-11-08, its reported price was about $112 and market capitalization about $296.5 million; these figures can move quickly and are not forecasts. A token’s price can fall even if its supply is capped, and a quoted market capitalization does not mean you could sell a large holding at that value.

## How do people get and store GNO?

People generally obtain GNO through a cryptocurrency exchange that lists it or by swapping another token for it on a supported decentralized exchange. Availability, trading pairs and withdrawal networks vary by provider. Before confirming a withdrawal, check that the destination wallet accepts GNO on the exact network selected; sending an asset to an unsupported chain or address can make recovery difficult or impossible.

For self-custody, use a wallet that supports the relevant Ethereum-compatible network and GNO token. A hardware wallet can keep signing keys offline, but it still depends on you protecting its recovery phrase and checking transaction details. You can also keep tokens with a custodial provider, which means relying on that provider to safeguard and release them. Neither method removes price, platform or user-error risks. Avoid sharing recovery phrases, and verify addresses and token details using a trusted wallet or explorer interface.

## What will it cost to transfer GNO?

A GNO transfer costs network fees, not a fixed GNO charge set by the token. On Ethereum, you normally need ETH for gas; on Arbitrum, fees are generally paid in ETH; and on Gnosis Chain, transaction gas is paid in xDAI. Fees vary with network activity and the action you take, so check the wallet’s estimate before signing and keep some of the relevant gas token available.

Moving GNO between chains may require a bridge or an exchange withdrawal and deposit. Bridges can add charges on top of network fees, and the supported routes and token representations differ. A bridge also introduces smart-contract and operational risks beyond an ordinary transfer. Confirm the destination network, route, token contract and estimated total cost; a low quoted fee does not guarantee that a transfer is reversible if you choose the wrong route.

## What could go wrong when you hold GNO?

GNO exposes you to several risks at once. Its market price can be volatile, and trading activity may be limited relative to the value implied by its market capitalization. That can make a large sale harder to complete at a quoted price. Governance also carries uncertainty: DAO decisions can change how the ecosystem develops, and holding tokens does not give you control over the outcome.

Staking can involve validator performance, technical and operational issues, and changing participation rules. Using a bridge adds smart-contract and route risks; using a custodial exchange adds the possibility of withdrawal limits, service disruption or loss of access. Self-custody shifts responsibility to you, including protecting keys and selecting the right network. These are different risks, so consider which ones apply to how you plan to hold or use GNO rather than assuming that a capped supply or established ecosystem makes it safe.

## How did GNO move beyond prediction markets?

Gnosis was founded in 2015 and GNO launched on 2017-04-18. The project began with decentralized prediction markets and later developed a broader ecosystem spanning asset management, decentralized trading and payments. That history helps explain why GNO is associated with both governance and the security of Gnosis Chain, rather than serving only as a fee token for one app.

The ecosystem now includes Safe, CoW Protocol and Gnosis Pay, but these products have their own functions and rules. Their existence does not make GNO a share in those products or guarantee that their adoption will increase demand for the token. If you are evaluating GNO, separate the token’s specific governance and staking roles from the wider Gnosis project’s activity, and check whether the particular feature you care about actually uses GNO.

Gnosis (GNO) is ranked #134 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $296M and a price of $112.31 as of Nov 8, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation is $337M, so roughly 88% of the eventual supply is in circulation today; tokens still to be released could add selling pressure.

The price was up 5.2% over 7 days, down 3.2% over 30 days, down 8.7% over the past year. It trades about 83% below its all-time high of $644.20, set on Nov 8, 2021.

About 2.64M GNO are in circulation out of a maximum supply of 3M (88% issued).

24-hour trading volume was about $1.00M, or 0.3% of its market cap: low turnover, so large orders can move the price.

GNO is the native token of xDai; it also has token contracts on 2 chains we track, including Ethereum, Arbitrum. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.

GNO FAQs

What is GNO used for?

GNO is used for GnosisDAO governance and Gnosis Chain staking and validation. Holding it alone does not automatically make you a validator or guarantee staking returns.

Which networks support GNO?

GNO is issued on Ethereum, Arbitrum and Gnosis Chain. Check the selected network and token details before sending, because the same ticker on different chains may require a supported route to move between them.

Can I pay Gnosis Chain fees with GNO?

No. Gnosis Chain uses xDAI to pay gas, while Ethereum and Arbitrum generally use ETH for transaction fees. Keep the relevant gas token in your wallet when transferring or interacting with GNO.

How can I store GNO?

GNO can be held in a wallet that supports its network and token, or with a custodial provider that supports GNO deposits and withdrawals. With self-custody, protect your recovery phrase and confirm the network before sending.

What is GNO’s maximum supply?

GNO has a maximum supply of 3 million. About 2.64 million were circulating as of 2026-11-08; supply figures and market prices can change, so check current figures before making decisions.

What is the market cap of Gnosis?

As of Nov 8, 2026, Gnosis had a market cap of about $296M, ranking #134 among cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation. Market cap is price multiplied by circulating supply, so it moves with the price.

What is the all-time high of GNO?

Gnosis's all-time high is $644.20, reached on Nov 8, 2021. Its all-time low is $6.88 (Mar 12, 2020). Past prices say nothing about future returns.

What is the circulating supply of GNO?

As of Nov 8, 2026, about 2.64M GNO were in circulation, against a maximum supply of 3M.

Which blockchains is GNO on?

GNO is the native token of xDai. It has token contracts on Ethereum, Arbitrum.
