## What does holding RUNE let you do?

RUNE is THORChain’s native token. Holding it can give you a role in the protocol beyond simply swapping assets: RUNE is used in liquidity and settlement, governance, staking, and bonding by validator nodes. It can also be used to reward node operators. These functions connect the token to THORChain’s operation, but they do not guarantee income, voting influence, or a market value.

THORChain is a decentralized exchange protocol built for swaps across supported blockchains. It says users can swap native assets, including Bitcoin, without relying on bridges or wrapped versions of those assets. You do not need RUNE just to make every swap, but holding it means taking on the risks of a token whose demand and use depend on the protocol’s activity and security.

## Which chains and wallets support RUNE?

RUNE is native to THORChain and is issued on that chain. The listed supported swap networks are Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP Ledger, BNB Smart Chain, Solana, TRON, Dogecoin, Bitcoin Cash, Litecoin, Avalanche, Cosmos, Base, and THORChain. Support for a network means THORChain can route certain swaps involving it; it does not mean RUNE exists natively on every listed chain.

To store RUNE yourself, use a wallet that explicitly supports the THORChain network and RUNE. Check the network shown in the wallet before sending: an address or token with a similar name on another chain may not be the same asset. Self-custody puts the recovery phrase and signing security in your hands. If you lose access to them, a wallet provider generally cannot restore your funds. For a swap, also check that both the asset and route you want are supported at that moment.

## How much RUNE exists, and what can change demand?

THORChain’s stated maximum and total supply are both about 353.9 million RUNE; about 329.2 million were circulating as of 2026-11-08. Circulating supply can change as tokens enter or leave circulation, so treat these figures as a dated snapshot, not a live count. The project’s maximum supply is not a promise that the token’s market price will rise or remain stable.

RUNE’s uses in liquidity, settlement, staking, node bonding, governance, and node-operator incentives connect its economics to activity and decisions on THORChain. Changes in usage, liquidity, protocol rules, or confidence in the network can affect demand and the amount of RUNE participants choose to hold or lock up. As of 2026-11-08, the reported market capitalization was about $191.9 million and fully diluted valuation about $206.3 million; both are moving estimates, not measures of what you could sell for.

## How do people get and store RUNE?

People generally obtain RUNE by using a crypto platform that lists it, swapping for it through a compatible service, or receiving it from another holder. Availability and supported networks differ by provider and location; check that the asset is native THORChain RUNE before you transact. This is general information, not a recommendation to buy or sell.

For storage, choose between a provider-managed account and a wallet where you control the keys. With a managed account, the provider controls custody and may set withdrawal conditions. With self-custody, secure your recovery phrase offline, never share it, and test that you understand the wallet’s network and address before sending a substantial amount. Keep in mind that a swap route and a wallet are different things: a wallet holding RUNE does not by itself guarantee access to every THORChain swap or feature.

## What can a RUNE transfer or swap cost?

Moving RUNE or swapping through THORChain can involve more than one cost. A transfer can require the network fee for the chain you are sending from, and the receiving or destination chain may have its own fee. Cross-chain swaps can also incur variable gas costs and liquidity-related fees. The amount can depend on the assets, route, network conditions, and available liquidity when you transact.

Check the final quote and transaction details before confirming, including the amount expected to arrive and any minimum output or slippage setting. A displayed estimate may change before execution. Fees are not a fixed universal price for every RUNE transfer or swap, and THORChain does not publish one flat amount that applies to all routes. If you use a separate bridge or exchange to move assets, that provider may add its own charges and risks; THORChain’s native-asset swap design does not remove the costs of every other service you might use.

## What risks should you check before holding RUNE?

RUNE carries protocol and market risks. A software fault, attack, validator failure, or disruption to a connected chain could affect swaps or funds. Cross-chain systems also depend on multiple networks working as expected, so a problem on one chain can affect a route even if RUNE itself is not the asset being swapped. Liquidity can vary, which may raise swap costs or make an expected amount harder to obtain.

RUNE’s price can move sharply, and past highs do not indicate future value. Its all-time high was about $20.87 on 2021-05-18, while its all-time low was about $0.0085 on 2019-09-27. Those historical extremes show volatility, not a forecast. Before using the protocol, confirm the supported route, fees, and output; for self-custody, protect your recovery phrase and beware of fake tokens or messages requesting it. Only use funds you can afford to lose.

## What is known about THORChain’s history?

THORChain’s launch date is not specified here, so avoid relying on an assumed start date when assessing its track record. Its stated purpose is cross-chain decentralized swapping, including swaps involving Bitcoin without bridges or wrapped assets. The project says it currently supports 13 blockchains, though network support and available routes can change.

RUNE’s trading history has included a wide range: the recorded all-time high was reached on 2021-05-18, and the all-time low on 2019-09-27. As of 2026-11-08, its reported price was about $0.58, down about 28.6% over one year. These are dated market observations, not a guide to what happens next. If you are evaluating RUNE, look at current protocol status, supported networks, liquidity, and security information as well as token history. A long price record alone cannot establish that a protocol is safe or that a token will retain value.

By the numbers

THORChain in numbers

THORChain (RUNE) is ranked #169 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $192M and a price of $0.5829 as of Nov 8, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation is $206M, so roughly 93% of the eventual supply is in circulation today; tokens still to be released could add selling pressure.

The price was down 5.5% over 7 days, down 14.0% over 30 days, down 28.6% over the past year. It trades about 97% below its all-time high of $20.87, set on May 18, 2021.

About 329.19M RUNE are in circulation out of a maximum supply of 353.87M (93% issued).

24-hour trading volume was about $112M, or 58% of its market cap: very high turnover.

RUNE FAQs

Do you need RUNE to use THORChain?

No. THORChain is designed to let users swap supported native assets, including Bitcoin, without bridges or wrapped assets. You may still need to pay network and liquidity-related fees.

Is RUNE available on Bitcoin, Ethereum, or other supported chains?

RUNE is native to THORChain, not to every network THORChain supports for swaps. Use a wallet that supports THORChain and verify the network and asset before sending.

Does swapping through THORChain require KYC?

THORChain says swaps are permissionless and do not require KYC. A separate exchange or service you use to obtain or store RUNE may have its own identity checks and rules.

What is RUNE’s maximum supply?

The reported maximum supply is about 353.9 million RUNE, with about 329.2 million circulating as of 2026-11-08. Circulating supply can change over time.

Are THORChain swap fees fixed?

Costs can include the sending and destination networks’ fees, plus variable gas and liquidity-related fees for a swap. Check the route quote before confirming because costs vary with the assets and network conditions.

What is the market cap of THORChain?

As of Nov 8, 2026, THORChain had a market cap of about $192M, ranking #169 among cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation. Market cap is price multiplied by circulating supply, so it moves with the price.

What is the all-time high of RUNE?

THORChain's all-time high is $20.87, reached on May 18, 2021. Its all-time low is $0.008513 (Sep 27, 2019). Past prices say nothing about future returns.

What is the circulating supply of RUNE?

As of Nov 8, 2026, about 329.19M RUNE were in circulation, against a maximum supply of 353.87M.

Which blockchains is RUNE on?

RUNE is the native token of THORChain.
