What can you use BAL for?

BAL is Balancer’s governance token: holding it may let you take part in decisions about the protocol, subject to its current governance rules. It is not the token you need simply to swap assets on Balancer, and it does not represent ownership of the protocol or a guaranteed share of its revenue. Balancer V3 is a decentralized exchange protocol where users can swap through customizable liquidity pools; BAL and using those pools are separate things.

If you are considering BAL, check the active governance process before assuming that holding tokens alone gives you a particular vote or reward. Pool participation can involve different assets and risks from holding BAL, including losses if pool prices move. BAL’s market price can also change independently of the protocol’s usage. Treat governance rights as a possible use of the token, not as a promise of income or influence.

Which networks and wallets can hold BAL?

BAL is issued on multiple networks, including Ethereum, Avalanche, Base, Optimism, Polygon, Arbitrum, Polygon zkEVM, Near, Harmony, Heco, and xDai. This list does not mean every network has the same Balancer services or that every exchange and wallet supports BAL on each one. BAL is not the native gas token of these chains, so you will need the relevant network’s gas token to make transfers or interact with contracts.

Use a wallet that supports the specific network and token standard you plan to use. Before sending funds, confirm the network and BAL contract address against Balancer’s official channels and the receiving wallet or exchange. A token with the same ticker on another chain may not be the asset you intend to transfer. If moving BAL between networks, check whether the route uses a bridge and understand its separate contract and operational risks. A mistaken network or address can make recovery difficult or impossible.

How much BAL exists?

As of 2026-11-08, BAL’s reported circulating supply was about 69.8 million, total supply about 72.4 million, and maximum supply about 96.2 million tokens. These figures describe different measures: circulating supply is the portion counted as in circulation, while the maximum is the stated upper limit. Supply figures can change, so check a current token record before making a decision.

A capped supply does not set a market price or guarantee demand. BAL’s price and liquidity can move sharply, and a quoted price may differ between venues or networks. If you are assessing how much exposure you would have, consider the amount you hold and the liquidity available where you would trade, rather than relying only on market capitalization or supply figures. No supply measure tells you what BAL will be worth later.

How can you store BAL, and what can go wrong?

Store BAL in a wallet that supports the network where your tokens are held. For a self-custody wallet, keep the recovery phrase offline and private; never share it with someone claiming they need it to verify, migrate, or unlock your tokens. Use a hardware wallet if appropriate for your needs, and test a small transfer before sending a larger amount to a new address. Exchanges may custody tokens for you, but you then depend on the exchange’s security and withdrawal policies.

Holding BAL carries market risk: its value can fall, and trading liquidity may be limited. Using Balancer pools adds smart-contract, pool-design, and asset-price risks; fees and pool conditions can differ, so inspect them before depositing. Multichain transfers add wrong-network and bridge risks. Governance decisions can also change protocol parameters. Do not confuse a wallet balance with a guaranteed right to rewards, and do not commit funds you cannot afford to lose.

By the numbers

BAL FAQs

What is BAL used for?

BAL is primarily a governance token for Balancer, subject to the protocol’s current voting rules. It is not required just to use a swap pool, and holding it does not guarantee rewards or income.

Which networks support BAL?

BAL is issued on Ethereum and several other networks, including Base, Optimism, Arbitrum, Avalanche and Polygon. Wallet and service support varies by network, so confirm the chain and token contract before transferring.

What is BAL’s maximum supply?

As of 2026-11-08, circulating supply was about 69.8 million BAL, total supply about 72.4 million, and the maximum supply about 96.2 million. These figures can change or be reported differently over time.

How do you store BAL safely?

Use a wallet compatible with the network holding your tokens and protect its recovery phrase offline. Verify the token contract and network before sending; transfers to the wrong chain or address may not be recoverable.

Can you lose money holding or using BAL?

Yes. BAL’s price can fall, and liquidity may vary. Using Balancer pools adds smart-contract, pool and asset-price risks, while cross-chain transfers can expose you to bridge or network mistakes.

What is the market cap of Balancer?

As of Nov 8, 2026, Balancer had a market cap of about $8.33M, ranking #1,346 among cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation. Market cap is price multiplied by circulating supply, so it moves with the price.
