What does holding YFI let you do?
YFI is Yearn Finance’s governance token. If you hold it, its main stated use is participating in decisions about the protocol; it is not the same as depositing assets into a Yearn vault, and holding YFI alone does not earn vault yield. Yearn’s products automate strategies that seek yield on deposited assets, while vault tokens such as yDAI represent a position tied to a deposit. These are different roles and carry different risks.
Before treating YFI as a governance tool, check how voting works and which proposals are open. Governance rights do not guarantee that a proposal will pass or that a decision will benefit every holder. YFI’s price can also move independently of the results of governance votes or the performance of Yearn vaults. The project describes the protocol as governed by YFI holders, but does not publish a guaranteed benefit or payout for simply holding the token.
Which networks and wallets support YFI?
YFI is listed as issued on Ethereum, Fantom, Near, Harmony, Polygon, Gnosis Chain (xDai), Avalanche, Arbitrum, Heco, Base and Optimism. Ethereum is the chain most closely associated with Yearn’s products. YFI is not identified as the native token of any blockchain, so a token bearing the YFI name on another network may be a bridged or otherwise represented version rather than the original Ethereum token.
Wallet support depends on the network and the specific token contract. Ethereum-compatible wallets can generally hold ERC-20 tokens, and many also support EVM networks such as Polygon, Arbitrum, Avalanche, Base and Optimism. Near requires a wallet that supports Near assets. Before sending funds, confirm the network and token contract with a trusted project interface or your exchange; matching names and symbols alone are not enough. Sending YFI to a wallet or exchange on an unsupported network can make it difficult or impossible to recover.
How many YFI exist, and what can change its value?
YFI has a maximum supply of 36,666 tokens. As of 2026-11-08, about 35,880 were circulating and total supply was 36,666. Circulating supply can change as tokens move into or out of circulation; the maximum is a separate cap, not a promise about how many tokens are actively available to trade. Yearn does not publish a fixed schedule for future supply changes in these figures, so check current token data before relying on a supply snapshot.
For context, YFI was about $2,014 per token on 2026-11-08, with a market capitalization of about $72.3 million and fully diluted valuation of about $73.8 million. Those figures are snapshots, not stable measures of value. Market price, trading activity and circulating supply can change quickly, and past highs do not indicate what YFI may be worth later.
How do people get and store YFI?
People may obtain YFI through a centralized crypto exchange or a decentralized exchange where the token is listed. Availability, identity checks, payment methods and withdrawal networks differ by provider and location. You can also receive YFI from another wallet. These are general ways tokens circulate, not a recommendation to acquire any asset.
For self-custody, use a wallet that supports the exact network and token contract you hold. Keep your recovery phrase offline and private; anyone with it may be able to control the wallet. Hardware wallets can reduce exposure to online device threats, but they do not protect you from signing a malicious transaction or choosing the wrong network. If you leave YFI with a custodian, you rely on that provider to safeguard the assets and process withdrawals. Check its supported network and withdrawal terms before transferring, and make a small test transfer when appropriate.
What does it cost to transfer or bridge YFI?
Sending YFI costs a network transaction fee, usually paid in that network’s native gas token rather than in YFI. On Ethereum, gas costs vary with network demand and the complexity of the transaction. Fees on other supported networks also vary; there is no single fixed YFI transfer fee. Wallets and exchanges may show an estimate before you confirm, while custodial withdrawals can have separate provider charges.
Moving YFI between networks may require a bridge if a suitable route is available. A bridge can involve fees on the source and destination networks, a bridge charge, and possible price impact or delays. Bridging adds smart-contract and operational risk, and a token representation on the destination chain may not be interchangeable with every version of YFI. Yearn does not publish one universal fee for transfers or bridges. Check the exact route, network, contract and total cost before signing.
What can go wrong when you hold or use YFI?
YFI carries the usual risks of a governance token: its market price can fall sharply, trading liquidity may vary, and governance outcomes can change how the protocol operates. Holding the token does not guarantee a vote will succeed or produce income. Keep in mind that Yearn vault deposits are a separate activity and can expose you to smart-contract bugs, strategy losses, changing yields and risks in the protocols a vault uses. Automated strategies do not remove those risks.
Also check that you are interacting with the intended token and Yearn product. Fake tokens, phishing pages, malicious wallet approvals and mistaken network transfers can lead to irreversible losses. A third-party bridge or exchange adds its own risks. Do not assume that a product described as insurance covers YFI holdings or every vault loss; confirm the terms and exclusions for the specific product before relying on any protection.
How did Yearn and YFI develop?
Yearn began as a project by Andre Cronje to automate moving capital among lending platforms as lending rates changed. The project description names dYdX, Aave and Compound as early destinations for that strategy. Yearn later introduced vaults, which automate yield strategies and can pool transaction costs across users. The protocol is maintained by independent developers and governed by YFI holders.
A launch date is not published in the project facts summarized here. Historical price records show an all-time high of about $90,787 on 2021-05-11 and an all-time low of about $31.65 on 2020-07-18. These extremes show how widely YFI’s market value has varied; they do not provide a forecast or a guide to future returns. Yearn’s vault strategies and available products can also change over time, so assess the current product separately from the token’s history.
