What does holding COW give you?
COW is a governance token for the CoW Protocol ecosystem. Holding it gives you the right to take part in CowDAO governance and help curate the protocol’s infrastructure. The token also provides fee discounts when trading on CoW Swap and some other perks, although the size and conditions of those benefits can vary.
COW is not the same thing as using CoW Swap: you can trade through the protocol without holding the token. Nor does holding COW mean you own a share of a company or have a claim on protocol revenue. Its practical value to you depends on whether you want a governance role or can use the stated discounts and perks.
Before relying on a discount, check its current terms in the app. Consider whether you would still want to hold COW if you did not use those benefits; governance rights do not guarantee influence over decisions or a financial return.
Which networks and wallets can hold COW?
COW is listed as issued on Ethereum, BNB Chain, Polygon, xDai, Base and Arbitrum. These are separate networks, so a COW token shown on one chain is not automatically the same on-chain asset as a token shown on another. xDai is associated with what is now commonly called Gnosis Chain; check the network and token contract before sending funds.
You can generally hold an EVM-compatible token in a wallet that supports the relevant network, including a software or hardware wallet. Confirm that the wallet supports both the chain and custom-token display if COW does not appear automatically. Use the token’s verified contract address for that network; a familiar ticker alone does not identify the genuine token.
If you use an exchange or custodial wallet, check which COW networks it supports for deposits and withdrawals. Sending to an unsupported network or address can make funds difficult or impossible to recover. Do not assume a token on one chain can be withdrawn directly to another without a supported bridge or exchange service.
How much COW exists, and what can move its price?
COW has a maximum and total supply of 1 billion tokens. About 574.5 million were circulating as of November 8, 2026. The gap between circulating and total supply does not, by itself, tell you when or how the remaining tokens may enter circulation; check current token and governance disclosures for any distribution or unlock schedule.
Supply is only one factor that can affect COW’s market price. Demand for governance, discounts or other perks, trading activity, broader crypto-market conditions, liquidity and changes to the protocol can all matter. Governance decisions or changes to token benefits may also affect how holders view the token. None of these factors makes a future price predictable.
Treat quoted market prices and market capitalisation as time-sensitive. The token’s price can move sharply, and a displayed market value does not guarantee you can sell a particular amount at that price. Review current market conditions and the token’s circulating supply rather than relying on an old snapshot.
How do people get and store COW?
People commonly get tokens through a crypto exchange or a decentralised trading service, then hold them in a wallet or leave them with a custodian. Availability depends on the platform, your location and which COW network it supports. This is general information, not a recommendation to buy or trade.
If you already hold COW, first identify the network and contract address shown by the wallet or exchange. For self-custody, protect your recovery phrase offline and never share it with anyone claiming to provide support. A wallet address is public, but control of the recovery phrase or signing key gives control of the assets.
Keep a record of the network used for each deposit or transfer. A token may need to be added manually to a wallet’s display, and a fake token can use the same ticker. Check the contract through a reliable project or network reference before interacting. Custodial storage avoids managing private keys yourself, but leaves you dependent on the provider’s security, withdrawal policies and continued operation.
What does it cost to move COW?
A COW transfer usually requires the native gas token of the network it is on. For example, Ethereum transactions require ETH for gas; other listed networks use their own gas tokens. Fees change with network demand and transaction complexity, so check the wallet’s estimate immediately before confirming. There is no single fixed COW transfer fee.
Moving COW between networks can involve a bridge or a service that withdraws and deposits on different chains. That can add fees, waiting time and extra contract risk. Some services may not support every COW network, and the token representation or withdrawal route can differ. Confirm the destination network and the service’s current instructions before sending.
A low network fee is not proof that a transfer is safe. Test with a small amount only if you understand the extra cost and risk of doing so; for any transfer, verify the destination address and network. If you send COW to an incompatible address or choose the wrong network, recovery may not be available.
What risks should you check before holding COW?
COW’s value can fall, and the token’s governance and discount utility may change through protocol decisions. Governance rights do not guarantee that your proposal will pass or that you will have meaningful influence. The token is also not a claim on company ownership or guaranteed income.
There are technical risks as well. A wallet, token contract, protocol integration or bridge can be compromised or malfunction. Holding representations across several networks adds the risk of choosing an unsupported chain or interacting with a counterfeit contract. CoW Swap’s fees and audit status are unclear, so check current protocol disclosures rather than assuming that a familiar product or token has been fully reviewed.
Market liquidity can vary, and a quoted price may not be available for a large trade. Exchanges and custodians can impose their own withdrawal limits or suspend services. Keep only the assets you are prepared to manage, protect your signing keys, and check the current governance and contract details before relying on COW’s benefits.
What is known about COW’s history?
The supplied token details do not give a launch date for COW. They do record a historical all-time high of about $2.22 on March 28, 2022, and an all-time low of about $0.0399 on November 9, 2022. Those are past market observations, not reference prices or indicators of where the token may trade next.
As of November 8, 2026, about 574.5 million of COW’s 1 billion maximum supply was circulating. Supply figures and market conditions can change, so use current figures when assessing the token. Its role remains tied to CowDAO governance, CoW Swap fee discounts and other perks; check current protocol materials for changes to those functions.
For a holder, the useful historical question is not just how far the price has moved. It is whether the governance role and practical token benefits still matter to you, and whether you understand the network and custody risks of the COW you hold.
