What can holding POL do for you?

POL is Polygon’s network token: holding it can let you pay transaction fees on Polygon PoS, delegate it for staking, and take part in Polygon governance processes. It is not a share in a company, and holding POL alone does not guarantee income or voting influence.

On Polygon PoS, transactions use POL for gas. Staking means delegating tokens to a validator; any rewards depend on network rules and validator performance and can change. Check the current staking terms before committing tokens, including any waiting period to withdraw. Governance participation may involve proposals and community processes, but the exact route and your practical influence can vary.

POL is relevant if you use applications on Polygon or want to participate in its staking and governance. If you only hold it, its value can still rise or fall sharply, and you may not receive any benefit beyond exposure to its market price.

Which networks and wallets support POL?

POL is Polygon PoS’s native token and is also issued as a token on Ethereum. The same ticker on different networks does not mean the assets are interchangeable without a supported transfer or migration process. Before sending, check that the receiving wallet or service supports POL on the exact network you are using.

You can store POL in a self-custody wallet that supports the relevant Polygon or Ethereum network, including compatible software wallets or hardware wallets connected through supported software. For self-custody, keep your recovery phrase private and offline; anyone who gets it may be able to control your funds. A wallet display is not proof that a deposit address accepts a particular network.

If you keep POL with a crypto service, that service controls the keys and sets its own deposit, withdrawal and network rules. Check those rules before transferring. Polygon PoS and Ethereum transactions also have different gas tokens: POL is used for gas on Polygon PoS, while Ethereum transactions require ETH.

How much POL exists, and what can move its value?

As of 2026-11-08, reported circulating and total supply were both about 10.65 billion POL. No maximum supply was reported, so that figure should not be read as a fixed cap. Supply can change under the token’s issuance and governance rules; check current Polygon documentation for the applicable schedule rather than assuming today’s total will stay constant.

Demand can move with use of Polygon applications, activity on Polygon PoS, staking participation, and broader crypto-market conditions. Token emissions, any applicable token burns, and changes to protocol rules can also affect supply or market expectations. None of those factors sets a guaranteed price. As a dated reference, POL’s reported price was about $0.091 on 2026-11-08; that figure can change quickly and is not a forecast.

Market liquidity and sentiment can amplify moves in either direction. Treat market capitalization and supply figures as snapshots, and verify the network and token contract before acting on a supply or price display.

How do you get POL and handle the MATIC migration?

People generally obtain POL through a crypto exchange or by swapping tokens through a compatible service or application. Availability, identity checks, payment methods and withdrawal networks vary by provider and location. This is general information, not a recommendation to acquire POL.

POL replaced MATIC as Polygon PoS’s native gas and staking token in September 2024. On Polygon PoS, the upgrade converted MATIC to POL automatically. MATIC held on Ethereum may require a migration through Polygon’s supported migration process, while some exchanges handled the change for their customers. The treatment depends on where your MATIC is held, so check the current instructions from the service or network involved before transferring or migrating.

For storage, decide whether you want a service to custody tokens or to control them in your own wallet. With self-custody, test address and network details carefully, protect your recovery phrase, and keep a separate record of any staking or migration steps. Sending to an unsupported network or address can make funds difficult or impossible to recover.

What does it cost to transfer POL?

A POL transfer on Polygon PoS generally requires a network gas fee paid in POL. A POL transfer on Ethereum requires ETH for gas, which can be substantially different from the Polygon fee and varies with network demand. There is no fixed fee to quote here: check the wallet’s transaction estimate before confirming, and leave enough gas in the correct network token.

Moving POL between Ethereum and Polygon PoS may involve a bridge or another supported transfer service. That can add a service charge, require fees on one or both chains, and take time to complete. A centralized exchange may instead offer deposits and withdrawals on selected networks, with its own fees and processing rules. These routes are not interchangeable: choosing the wrong network can result in a failed or unrecoverable transfer.

Before sending, compare the displayed network, destination address, minimum withdrawal, expected time and total cost. A small test transfer may help check the route, but it still incurs fees. Never rely on a fee estimate from an old transaction; congestion and service terms change.

What risks should you check before holding or moving POL?

POL carries market, custody and network risks. Its price can fall sharply, and there is no guaranteed staking return or assurance that Polygon activity will support its market value. Staking adds validator and protocol risks; understand the current delegation, withdrawal and reward rules before committing tokens. Do not treat displayed rewards as fixed income.

Bridges and migration tools involve smart-contract and operational risks. Transfers may be delayed, a service may suspend withdrawals, or sending to the wrong network may leave tokens inaccessible. In self-custody, losing your recovery phrase can mean losing access; sharing it can let someone else take control. Keep it private and be wary of unsolicited messages offering migration help or asking you to connect a wallet.

The POL transition followed Polygon’s move away from MATIC: Polygon PoS made POL its native gas and staking token in September 2024, while MATIC on Ethereum could require a separate migration. This history makes network checks especially important when handling older MATIC balances. Confirm current official migration instructions before taking action.

Why did Polygon change MATIC to POL?

POL is the successor to MATIC in Polygon’s token system. Polygon PoS changed its native gas token from MATIC to POL in September 2024, with the stated role extending to staking and network validation. The migration formed part of Polygon’s broader token and network plans; it did not make every MATIC token on every chain automatically identical at the same moment.

If your balance is already POL on Polygon PoS, it is used as the native token there. If you have MATIC on Ethereum or in an exchange account, the conversion path depends on the holding location and the provider’s arrangements. Some exchange services managed conversion for customers, while self-custodied Ethereum MATIC may require a supported migration process. Check the current route before sending anything.

When reviewing a POL balance, distinguish its network from its symbol. Confirm the token name, network and deposit or withdrawal support in your wallet or service, particularly if you are working with an older MATIC balance.
