What can you use ZEC for?
ZEC is the native currency of the Zcash blockchain. You can use it to send payments, including shielded transactions that hide transaction details from public view. Zcash also supports transparent transactions, where information such as addresses and amounts is visible on the public blockchain. Privacy is therefore an option, not an automatic feature of every ZEC transfer.
Zcash is a payment-focused network, not a general-purpose platform for running smart contracts. Holding ZEC does not give you a claim on a company, dividends or guaranteed access to a service. Its practical use depends on whether the people, merchants or services you want to pay accept it, and whether their wallets support the transaction type you need.
Before sending, check whether the recipient can receive shielded ZEC and confirm the address type. A transparent transfer will not provide the same privacy as a shielded one. Zcash’s selective-disclosure features can help you share transaction details when needed, but they do not make every transaction private by default.
Which wallets can hold ZEC privately?
Native ZEC lives on the Zcash blockchain. To hold it yourself, choose a wallet that explicitly supports ZEC; support for shielded addresses and transactions varies between wallets. Check that the wallet supports the address type you plan to use, and that you can restore the same type of account from your recovery phrase. A wallet that handles transparent ZEC may not support all shielded features.
You can also hold ZEC in a custodial exchange account, where the provider controls the keys and manages withdrawals. That may be simpler, but you depend on the provider’s security, access rules and withdrawal support. If you use a hardware wallet, confirm ZEC and the relevant shielded features are supported before transferring funds.
Keep your recovery phrase offline and private. Anyone who obtains it may be able to control your funds, and losing it can leave you unable to restore a self-custody wallet. Test a new wallet setup with a small transfer if appropriate, and confirm the destination address before sending. ZEC represented on another network, if offered by a service, is not the same as native ZEC on Zcash.
How does ZEC supply change over time?
Zcash has a maximum supply of 21 million ZEC, with new coins issued through mining rewards on its proof-of-work network. The protocol’s reward schedule includes halvings, which reduce the amount of new ZEC issued over time. The cap does not mean all coins are already circulating, and lost or inaccessible coins may still be counted in supply estimates.
As of 2026-11-08, the reported circulating and total supply was about 17.03 million ZEC, against the 21 million maximum. These figures can change as new coins are mined and supply estimates are updated. ZEC’s market price can also move sharply; a fixed maximum supply does not guarantee a particular value or level of demand.
ZEC is secured by mining using Equihash. Miners validate transactions and add blocks, while issuance rewards and transaction fees provide incentives to participate. The supply schedule is part of the protocol, but changes to a blockchain’s rules can carry community and implementation risks. Do not treat the maximum supply alone as a measure of safety or future performance.
What will it cost to send or withdraw ZEC?
Sending native ZEC requires a transaction fee on the Zcash network, paid in ZEC. Network fees compensate miners for processing transactions. The exact amount can depend on wallet settings and transaction details; check the fee shown in your wallet before approving a transfer. A low network fee does not remove the need to confirm the address and transaction type carefully.
If you withdraw ZEC from an exchange, the provider may set a separate withdrawal fee or minimum. That charge is not the same as the network fee, and exchange terms can change. Moving ZEC through a bridge or using a wrapped representation on another blockchain may add bridge, network or service charges, as well as extra steps and risks. Such assets are not native ZEC simply because they track its value.
For a transfer between wallets, make sure both sides support the same kind of Zcash address and transaction. Some wallets may not handle shielded transfers. If you are unsure, check the wallet’s fee estimate and support details before confirming; once a blockchain transaction is confirmed, it may not be reversible.
What risks come with holding ZEC?
ZEC can be volatile, and its price may rise or fall substantially. Privacy features also have practical limits: transparent transactions expose public details, while shielded use depends on compatible wallets and correct handling. A shielded transaction does not protect you if you reveal identifying information elsewhere, and sharing viewing information can disclose transaction details to others.
Privacy-focused cryptocurrencies may face changing rules or restrictions in some jurisdictions and on some exchanges. Check the laws where you live and whether your chosen service supports ZEC deposits and withdrawals. Do not assume that an exchange listing means every transaction type is available.
Self-custody brings key-management risks: a lost recovery phrase or compromised device can mean permanent loss. Custodial storage adds counterparty risk, including account limits, withdrawal pauses or provider failure. Bridges and wrapped tokens introduce additional technical and custody risks. Before moving funds, verify addresses and network compatibility, and avoid sending more than you can afford to lose.
Why does Zcash offer both public and shielded transfers?
Zcash launched on 2016-10-28 as a standalone cryptocurrency. Its development grew out of earlier Zerocoin research, proposed in 2013, which explored adding privacy to cryptocurrency payments. Zcash instead established its own blockchain and native asset, ZEC, rather than remaining a Bitcoin add-on.
The network uses proof of work with Equihash, and its design lets users choose between transparent and shielded transactions. Shielded transactions use zero-knowledge proofs to verify that a transfer follows the network’s rules without publishing the same details as a transparent transfer. Zcash’s shielded features and wallet support have developed over time, so what you can do depends partly on the wallet and address format you use.
That history explains the main trade-off for an owner: ZEC can be used for public or more private payments, but privacy is not universal across the network or every service. When deciding how to hold or transfer it, check the current wallet support and the transaction type rather than assuming every ZEC address works the same way.

ZEC FAQs
Are all ZEC transactions private?
No. Zcash supports both transparent and shielded transactions. Shielded privacy requires a compatible wallet and transaction type, and it does not prevent information you disclose elsewhere from identifying you.
How many ZEC can exist?
ZEC’s maximum supply is 21 million. As of 2026-11-08, reported circulating and total supply was about 17.03 million ZEC; issuance continues through mining rewards.
Which blockchain does ZEC use?
ZEC runs on the Zcash blockchain and uses proof of work with Equihash. A wallet must specifically support ZEC, and support for shielded transactions can vary.
Does it cost money to send ZEC?
Sending native ZEC requires a network fee paid in ZEC. An exchange may charge a separate withdrawal fee, so check both charges and the transaction details before confirming.
Can ZEC transactions be public?
Yes. Zcash supports transparent transactions, which expose transaction details on the public blockchain. Shielded transactions are optional and require compatible wallet support.
