What can you use NEAR for?

NEAR is the native token of the NEAR Protocol blockchain. You use it to pay for transactions and smart-contract activity on NEAR; network storage can also require NEAR. The protocol is a proof-of-stake, sharded layer-1 blockchain, and NEAR is used in its staking system. These are direct token uses, distinct from the project’s broader focus on AI applications, agents and cross-chain transactions.

Holding NEAR does not automatically give you access to every application built on the network, nor does the token itself guarantee a role in an AI product. Some apps may use their own tokens or payment arrangements. Before sending NEAR to an application, check whether it is on the native NEAR network and what the app requires. If you hold NEAR only as an asset, its practical uses still depend on compatible wallets, exchanges and services.

Which network and wallets hold native NEAR?

NEAR is native to the NEAR Protocol blockchain. It is not listed as natively issued on another chain. You may encounter bridged or wrapped versions elsewhere, but those are representations managed through a bridge or other system—not the same as sending native NEAR on NEAR. Check the network and token contract shown by the service before transferring.

For self-custody, choose a wallet that explicitly supports the NEAR network and NEAR accounts. A wallet’s ability to display tokens on another network does not mean it can receive native NEAR. Hardware wallets can keep signing keys offline when the device and wallet software support the network; custodial services hold keys on your behalf instead. In either case, protect recovery details and verify the destination address and network before confirming a transfer. A mistaken network selection or loss of your recovery phrase can make funds difficult or impossible to recover.

How does NEAR supply change?

Reported circulating supply was about 1.31 billion NEAR as of 2026-11-08. The reported total supply was also about 1.31 billion, and no maximum supply is listed. Small differences between circulating and total figures can arise from reporting methods, so check the figures and date used by the service you rely on.

Supply can change through protocol issuance and token burns. NEAR uses proof of stake, so staking rewards are one factor that can add tokens to circulation; transaction-fee burns can reduce supply. The net effect depends on activity and protocol parameters, which can change. Staking is not a guaranteed return: rewards are denominated in NEAR, their value can fall, and unstaking may involve a waiting period. If you are comparing supply over time, distinguish total issuance from tokens that are actively circulating or staked.

How do people get and store NEAR?

People generally obtain NEAR through a crypto exchange, a peer-to-peer transfer, or by receiving it from someone who already holds it. Availability, identity checks and payment methods depend on the service and where you live. This is general information, not a recommendation to acquire the token.

For self-custody, use a wallet that supports native NEAR, keep its recovery phrase offline and private, and consider a hardware wallet if you need offline key storage. For an exchange account, the platform controls the keys, so access depends on its security and withdrawal policies. Before moving funds, send a small test amount if appropriate, confirm the receiving network is NEAR, and check that the recipient can use the address format you are sending to. Never share a recovery phrase or approve a transaction you do not understand.

What does it cost to move NEAR?

A transfer on NEAR requires a network fee paid in NEAR. The amount can vary with network conditions and the transaction type; smart-contract interactions may cost more than a simple transfer. Some applications also require NEAR for storage or contract-related costs. There is no single fee that applies to every action, so check the wallet’s estimate before signing and leave enough NEAR for later transactions.

Moving NEAR between chains adds separate costs and risks. A bridge or cross-chain service may charge its own fee, and you may also need to pay gas on the destination chain. Cross-chain systems can have different routes and settlement times, and a wrapped token may not be redeemable in the same way as native NEAR. Chain-abstraction or intent-based tools may simplify steps, but they do not make network, service or bridge costs disappear. Confirm the route, destination asset and total displayed cost before approving.

What could go wrong when you hold NEAR?

NEAR’s main risks include price volatility, software or validator problems, smart-contract bugs, and failures at exchanges or bridges. A token held through a custodial service also carries the risk that withdrawals are paused or access is lost. Staking adds its own conditions, including lockup or unstaking delays and possible penalties under the relevant mechanism. Read the terms of the wallet, validator or service you use rather than assuming every staking option works alike.

The project describes NEAR as infrastructure for AI-native applications, agents and cross-chain activity. That direction does not guarantee adoption, token demand or safe application behavior. Treat AI claims as a product focus, not a promise of performance. Check that an app is genuine, understand what permissions a transaction grants, and avoid signing messages or contract calls you cannot verify. Keep only the amount you are prepared to manage in a hot wallet, and never rely on a promised future price.

What is NEAR’s history and what has changed?

NEAR Protocol’s launch date is not specified in its token parameters here, so avoid relying on an assumed launch date. The token has traded through large price swings: its recorded all-time high was about $20.44 on 2022-01-16, and its recorded low was about $0.53 on 2020-11-04. Those past prices are historical reference points, not targets or forecasts.

The protocol is a proof-of-stake layer-1 network with sharded architecture. Its stated direction has expanded to include AI applications, user-owned agents, intents and chain abstraction. For you as a holder, the key distinction is between the network’s technical ambitions and the token’s concrete roles: paying for activity on NEAR and participating in its staking system. Check current protocol documentation and wallet support before acting, since software, fees and token mechanics can change over time.

By the numbers

NEAR Protocol in numbers

NEAR Protocol (NEAR) is ranked #21 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $4.84B and a price of $3.69 as of Nov 8, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation ($4.84B) is close to its market cap, so little new supply is still to come.

The price was down 16.4% over 7 days, down 20.9% over 30 days, up 35.3% over the past year. It trades about 82% below its all-time high of $20.44, set on Jan 16, 2022.

About 1.31B NEAR are in circulation. No hard maximum supply is listed, so new tokens can still be issued.

24-hour trading volume was about $254M, or 5.3% of its market cap: moderate turnover.

NEAR is the native token of Near. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.

NEAR FAQs

What is the NEAR token used for?

NEAR pays for transactions and smart-contract activity on its native blockchain. It is also used in the network’s proof-of-stake system.

Which network is NEAR on?

Native NEAR is on the NEAR Protocol network. Check that your wallet or exchange supports that network before depositing or withdrawing; wrapped versions on other chains are different representations.

How do you store NEAR safely?

You can store it with a self-custody wallet that supports NEAR or leave it with a custodial service. With self-custody, protect your recovery phrase and confirm the network and address before sending.

Does sending NEAR cost a fee?

Transfers require a network fee paid in NEAR, and the amount varies by transaction and network conditions. Bridges and destination chains may add their own fees.

Does NEAR have a maximum supply?

NEAR has no maximum supply listed in its token parameters. Issuance through staking rewards and burns from transaction fees can affect supply, and the net change depends on protocol activity and settings.

What is the market cap of NEAR Protocol?

As of Nov 8, 2026, NEAR Protocol had a market cap of about $4.84B, ranking #21 among cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation. Market cap is price multiplied by circulating supply, so it moves with the price.

What is the all-time high of NEAR?

NEAR Protocol's all-time high is $20.44, reached on Jan 16, 2022. Its all-time low is $0.5268 (Nov 4, 2020). Past prices say nothing about future returns.

What is the circulating supply of NEAR?

As of Nov 8, 2026, about 1.31B NEAR were in circulation; no fixed maximum supply is listed.

Which blockchains is NEAR on?
