What does holding AVAX let you do?

AVAX is Avalanche’s native token. You need it to pay transaction fees on Avalanche, and you can stake it to help secure the proof-of-stake network. It is also used in apps built on Avalanche, though an app may have its own tokens and rules.

Holding AVAX does not give you a share of a company or a claim on Avalanche’s revenue. Nor does it guarantee access to every app: you still need a compatible wallet and may need to meet an app’s own requirements. Staking can earn protocol rewards, but rewards are not guaranteed to make up for a fall in AVAX’s market value. If you stake through a service, that service may add its own terms and custody risks.

Which Avalanche network and wallets hold AVAX?

AVAX is the native token of Avalanche, rather than a token issued on a separate chain. Avalanche includes the C-Chain, which supports Ethereum-compatible smart contracts, as well as other network functions and chains. Many apps and wallet instructions refer specifically to the C-Chain, so check the network before sending or connecting.

Wallet support varies. Core Wallet is designed for Avalanche, and MetaMask can be configured for the C-Chain. Hardware wallets may also support AVAX through compatible software. Confirm that the wallet supports the exact Avalanche network and address format you intend to use; a token showing in one wallet does not mean every network is supported. Sending AVAX to an incompatible address or network can make it difficult or impossible to recover.

How much AVAX exists, and what changes its supply?

AVAX has a maximum supply of 720 million. As of 2026-11-08, about 445.8 million were circulating and about 470.8 million were in total supply. These figures can change as tokens are issued or removed from circulation.

Avalanche transaction fees are paid in AVAX and are burned, which removes them from supply. Staking rewards add AVAX under the network’s issuance rules, within the maximum supply. The balance between issuance and burned fees affects how supply changes over time; it does not set a guaranteed price or return for holders.

For context, AVAX traded at about $8.18, with a market capitalization of about $3.65 billion, as of 2026-11-08. Those are dated market snapshots, not fixed values. The token’s price can move sharply, and market capitalization is not the same as money available to withdraw.

How can you get and store AVAX?

People generally get AVAX through a cryptocurrency exchange or by swapping another asset using a compatible wallet or app. Availability, identity checks, payment methods and withdrawal rules depend on the service and where you live. This is general information, not a recommendation to buy.

For self-custody, you can use a software wallet or a compatible hardware wallet. A custodial exchange holds the keys for you; with self-custody, you are responsible for protecting the recovery phrase and approving transactions. Keep that phrase offline and private, and be wary of anyone asking you to share it.

Before sending, check that the destination supports AVAX on the same Avalanche network you are using. Consider a small test transfer if you are unfamiliar with the wallet or address. A wrong-network transfer, compromised device, fake wallet or lost recovery phrase can result in permanent loss.

What does it cost to move AVAX?

Moving AVAX on Avalanche costs a network transaction fee, paid in AVAX. The amount varies with the transaction and network conditions, so there is no single fee to rely on. Check the wallet’s final fee estimate before confirming; a smart-contract interaction can cost more than a simple transfer, and a transaction that fails may still use network resources.

A bridge transfer can involve more than one cost: a fee on the chain you send from, a fee on the destination chain, and potentially a bridge or service charge. Bridges also add a separate security risk. The displayed amount may not include every cost, so review the confirmation details and the bridge’s terms before proceeding. Sending funds between chains is not the same as making a regular Avalanche transfer.

What could go wrong when you hold AVAX?

The main risks are price volatility, technical problems and mistakes you cannot reverse. As of 2026-11-08, AVAX was about 94% below its all-time high of $144.96 on 2021-11-21. That history shows how much the market price can change; it does not indicate what will happen next.

You can lose access through a lost recovery phrase, a compromised wallet or a transfer to the wrong network. Smart-contract apps and bridges may have bugs or security failures, and a protocol’s proof-of-stake design does not remove those risks. If you stake through a third party, you also rely on that provider’s security and withdrawal terms. Staking rewards are not a price floor or a guarantee of profit.

Use only services you understand, verify addresses and network names, and avoid sharing wallet secrets. Do not treat a market-cap figure, staking offer or past price as evidence that your funds are safe.

What does AVAX’s history tell a holder?

Avalanche’s main network launched in 2020. Its native token, AVAX, is used for network fees and staking, and the platform supports smart contracts. The all-time low recorded for AVAX was $2.80 on 2020-12-31; its all-time high was $144.96 on 2021-11-21. Those past prices are historical reference points, not targets.

At about $8.18 on 2026-11-08, AVAX was far below its recorded high. Its value and market rank can change, and neither tells you whether the network will remain useful or how its apps will perform. If you are assessing an existing holding, focus on whether you understand the token’s role, custody arrangements and potential losses rather than assuming the price will revisit an earlier level.

By the numbers

Avalanche in numbers

Avalanche (AVAX) is ranked #28 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $3.65B and a price of $8.18 as of Nov 8, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation is $3.85B, so roughly 95% of the eventual supply is in circulation today; tokens still to be released could add selling pressure.

The price was down 4.1% over 7 days, down 20.4% over 30 days, down 54.8% over the past year. It trades about 94% below its all-time high of $144.96, set on Nov 21, 2021.

About 445.82M AVAX are in circulation out of a maximum supply of 720M (62% issued).

24-hour trading volume was about $91.8M, or 2.5% of its market cap: moderate turnover.

AVAX is the native token of Avalanche. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.

What is AVAX used for?

AVAX is used to pay Avalanche transaction fees and can be staked to help secure the network. Apps on Avalanche may also use it, but some have separate tokens and requirements.

Do you need AVAX to use Avalanche?

Yes. AVAX is the native token of Avalanche, and network fees are paid in AVAX. The fee varies with the transaction and network conditions.

What is the maximum supply of AVAX?
