Owning Cardano (ADA): Uses, Staking and Risks

ADA pays Cardano fees and can be delegated for staking, but holding it also means taking on market, custody and network risks. Here’s what to check before you use or store it.

What can holding ADA let you do?

Holding ADA lets you send value on Cardano, pay network transaction fees and take part in staking and governance. You can also use ADA in Cardano apps that accept it, including some decentralised finance and other smart-contract services; using an app brings risks beyond simply holding the token.

ADA is Cardano’s native token, not a share in a company or a claim on project income. Its usefulness depends on the network, wallets and apps continuing to operate and on other people accepting or using it. Staking can earn protocol rewards, but rewards vary and do not protect you from a fall in ADA’s market value.

If you only need to send or hold ADA, you do not need to interact with a smart contract. For app use, check that the app supports Cardano and understand what permissions or transactions you are approving before you sign.

Which chain and wallets support native ADA?

ADA is native to the Cardano blockchain. It is not issued natively on Ethereum or other chains, though third-party services may create bridged or wrapped versions elsewhere. Check the network and asset carefully before depositing or withdrawing: sending native ADA to an address or service that expects another network’s asset can make recovery difficult or impossible.

You can store ADA in a Cardano-compatible software wallet or a hardware wallet that supports Cardano. Wallet options include Yoroi, Lace and Daedalus; device and feature support can change, so confirm compatibility before transferring funds. A self-custody wallet gives you control of the recovery phrase and signing keys, which also means you are responsible for keeping them safe. Never share a recovery phrase with someone claiming to provide support.

An exchange account may hold ADA for you, but the exchange controls the keys. Check its supported withdrawal network and any withdrawal limits before relying on it.

Can you stake ADA without locking it?

You can delegate ADA to a Cardano stake pool to help participate in network security. Delegation is different from mining and, in ordinary Cardano staking, does not require you to lock your ADA: it stays in your wallet and can generally be spent or moved. Your wallet may show the delegation and reward details.

Rewards are not fixed or guaranteed. They can vary with pool performance, pool fees and network conditions, and they are paid in ADA, so their market value can rise or fall. Delegating does not remove the risks of holding a volatile token. Review the pool’s parameters and the wallet’s instructions before confirming a delegation.

Use a Cardano-compatible wallet and make sure you understand which account or stake key is being delegated. Be wary of sites or messages asking you to send ADA to “stake” it or reveal your recovery phrase; legitimate delegation should not require handing over your keys.

How much ADA is there, and what changes its supply?

Cardano’s maximum supply is 45 billion ADA. About 37.6 billion were circulating as of 2026-11-08; the exact amount changes as tokens enter circulation. ADA is used for transactions, staking and network participation. Protocol rewards and the distribution of remaining supply affect how much is circulating, but the total supply cannot exceed the stated cap.

Market figures move much faster than supply. On 2026-11-08, ADA’s price was about $0.18 and its market capitalisation was about $6.8 billion. Treat these as a dated snapshot, not a current quote or a measure of what the network will be worth later.

A capped supply does not guarantee scarcity-driven price growth. Demand, competing networks, network use, regulation and broader crypto-market conditions can all affect the price. Check the date on any supply or valuation figure before using it to understand your holdings.

What does it cost to send or bridge ADA?

Sending native ADA on Cardano requires a network fee, usually paid in ADA. It is not a fixed dollar charge: the fee is calculated using transaction size and network parameters. Your wallet should display the fee before you confirm; review it along with the recipient address and amount. A transaction may also include other Cardano assets or data, which can affect its size.

Moving ADA between Cardano and another blockchain usually involves a bridge or another third-party service. That can add service charges, fees on the destination network and extra steps. A bridged token may not be the same asset as native ADA, and bridge outages, contract faults or provider problems can put funds at risk.

If you are withdrawing from an exchange, its own withdrawal fee and network support apply too. Compare the network shown by the exchange with the receiving wallet’s supported network before sending. Do not assume a cheaper-looking route is safe or compatible.

What risks come with holding or using ADA?

ADA’s price can move sharply, and losses can be substantial. As one illustration of its volatility, it reached a recorded high of about $3.09 on 2021-09-01 and was about $0.18 on 2026-11-08. Past prices do not indicate what will happen next, and staking rewards do not offset a price decline automatically.

There are also network and custody risks. A software error, smart-contract exploit or service outage can affect apps that use Cardano. With self-custody, losing your recovery phrase or signing a malicious transaction can result in funds you cannot recover. With an exchange, you depend on the provider’s security, solvency and withdrawal access.

Cardano’s research-led development approach is not a guarantee that its software or applications are risk-free. Before using an app, check what you are approving and whether you can afford to lose the amount involved. Keep wallet software current and protect recovery details offline.

What is ADA’s history and price record?

Cardano was founded in 2017 by Charles Hoskinson, who had previously helped create Ethereum. Input Output Global (IOG) builds and maintains core Cardano software. The project describes its development as research-led, and ADA is designed as the network’s native asset for payments, fees, staking and governance.

The price record shows why a long history does not make ADA predictable. Its all-time high was about $3.09 on 2021-09-01, while a recorded low was about $0.019 on 2020-03-12. On 2026-11-08, ADA was about $0.18, roughly 69% lower than a year earlier. These are dated historical figures, not forecasts.

The project’s development and governance can change over time, as can the apps and services around it. If you are assessing ADA, consider both the network’s uses and whether you are comfortable with token-price volatility, technical risks and the possibility that adoption may not meet expectations.

By the numbers

Cardano in numbers

Cardano (ADA) is ranked #18 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $6.78B and a price of $0.1803 as of Nov 8, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation is $8.11B, so roughly 84% of the eventual supply is in circulation today; tokens still to be released could add selling pressure.

The price was down 6.1% over 7 days, down 22.9% over 30 days, down 69.2% over the past year. It trades about 94% below its all-time high of $3.09, set on Sep 1, 2021.

About 37.58B ADA are in circulation out of a maximum supply of 45B (84% issued).

24-hour trading volume was about $113M, or 1.7% of its market cap: low turnover, so large orders can move the price.

ADA is the native token of Cardano. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.
