What does holding DOT let you do?

DOT is Polkadot’s native token. Holding it can give you a role in network governance, let you stake to help secure the network, and pay for transactions and other network operations. Polkadot is designed to connect independent blockchains so they can exchange messages and value while sharing security.

You do not need DOT simply to understand or use every connected chain: each network may have its own tokens, fees and rules. DOT’s uses are tied to Polkadot itself, so consider whether you want to participate in governance or staking before choosing to hold it. Staking can involve lockups and slashing risks if a validator behaves improperly. Governance votes can affect network decisions, but holding DOT does not guarantee that a proposal will pass or that the network will grow.

Which network and wallets support DOT?

DOT is native to the Polkadot network. It is not the native token of every blockchain that connects to Polkadot; those networks can have separate tokens and transaction fees. A token labelled DOT on another network may be a wrapped or bridged representation rather than native DOT, so check the network and token details before sending it.

You can use a wallet that explicitly supports Polkadot accounts and DOT, such as Polkadot.js, Talisman or SubWallet. Hardware wallets may also support DOT, but support depends on the device and account setup. Check the wallet’s current compatibility and confirm the receiving address format before transferring. A wallet stores the keys that control your tokens; it does not store DOT itself. If you lose access to your recovery phrase or sign a malicious transaction, you may lose control of your funds.

How much DOT exists, and what can change its supply?

As of 2026-11-08, about 1.71 billion DOT were circulating, against a maximum supply of 2.1 billion. The circulating and total supply figures were both about 1.71 billion at that time. Supply is not fixed at the circulating figure: issuance and network governance can affect how it changes over time, so check current token details when supply matters to your decision.

Staking rewards can add DOT to a holder’s balance, while staking also means accepting network-specific conditions and possible unbonding delays. Governance can affect network parameters, including token economics. Do not treat a maximum supply as a promise about price or future demand. DOT’s price was about $0.89 on 2026-11-08; it had reached an all-time high of about $54.98 on 2021-11-04. Those figures show how sharply its market value has varied, not what it may do next.

How can you get and store DOT?

You can generally get DOT through a crypto service that supports it, or receive it from someone who already holds it. Availability, identity checks, payment methods and withdrawal rules depend on the service and where you live. This is general information, not a recommendation to buy.

For storage, choose a wallet that supports native Polkadot DOT and keep your recovery phrase offline and private. Before sending a small or large amount, check the wallet’s network selection and verify the destination address. A deposit address for a different network may not accept native DOT, even if the token name looks the same. If you use a hosted account, the provider controls the keys; with a self-custody wallet, you are responsible for safeguarding them. Keep a separate backup of your recovery phrase, and never share it with anyone claiming they need it to help with a transfer.

What does it cost to move DOT?

A native DOT transfer requires a Polkadot network fee, generally paid in DOT. The exact cost can vary with network conditions and the transaction, and Polkadot does not have one fixed fee that applies to every transfer. Check the fee displayed by your wallet before confirming; make sure the account also has enough DOT to cover it.

Moving DOT between networks can add extra costs and steps. A bridge may charge its own fee, and the destination network may require its native token for later transactions. Bridging also introduces additional technical and custody risks compared with a simple transfer on Polkadot. Confirm that the bridge supports the exact networks and token representation you intend to use, and check how the destination asset can be moved or redeemed. Never assume that a low displayed transfer fee includes every cost.

What could go wrong when you hold DOT?

DOT’s main risks include market volatility, wallet mistakes, validator or staking risks, and changes made through network governance. Staking can restrict access to your tokens for a period, and validator failures may expose stakers to penalties under network rules. Delegating voting power or approving a transaction also means you need to understand what you are authorising.

Cross-chain transfers add another layer of risk: choosing the wrong network or using an unsafe bridge can lead to funds being delayed or lost. Check addresses carefully and be wary of unsolicited messages, fake support accounts and requests for your recovery phrase. DOT’s market value has also fallen substantially from its 2021 peak; past prices do not indicate future performance. Use only funds you can afford to lose, and consider whether you can tolerate both price changes and periods when staked tokens are not immediately available.

What is DOT’s history, and what does it say about risk?

Polkadot was built as a multi-chain network in which separate chains can communicate while sharing security. Its design leaves connected chains room to serve different purposes rather than requiring every chain to use the same structure. DOT supports participation in the network through governance, staking and payment for network operations.

Polkadot launched in 2020. Since then, DOT has experienced wide price swings: its recorded all-time high was about $54.98 on 2021-11-04, while its recorded low was about $0.73 on 2026-08-18. As of 2026-11-08, it traded at about $0.89. These are historical snapshots, not a forecast. If you are deciding whether to keep or use DOT, focus on the current network functions you need, the wallet and transfer risks you can manage, and whether you are comfortable with the token’s price volatility.

By the numbers

Polkadot in numbers

Polkadot (DOT) is ranked #57 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $1.53B and a price of $0.8935 as of Nov 8, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation ($1.53B) is close to its market cap, so little new supply is still to come.

The price was down 5.7% over 7 days, down 21.9% over 30 days, down 74.1% over the past year. It trades about 98% below its all-time high of $54.98, set on Nov 4, 2021.

About 1.71B DOT are in circulation out of a maximum supply of 2.1B (81% issued).

24-hour trading volume was about $48.1M, or 3.1% of its market cap: moderate turnover.

DOT FAQs

What is DOT used for?

DOT is Polkadot’s native token. It can be used for governance, staking, network fees and other network operations.

Which network is DOT on?

Native DOT is on Polkadot, and you need a wallet that supports Polkadot accounts. A DOT-labelled asset on another network may be a bridged or wrapped version, so confirm the network before depositing or sending.

What is the maximum supply of DOT?

The maximum supply is 2.1 billion DOT. About 1.71 billion were circulating as of 2026-11-08; issuance and governance can affect how supply changes over time.

Does it cost DOT to transfer DOT?

A native transfer requires a network fee generally paid in DOT, and the amount can vary. A bridge or destination network may add separate fees.

Can you stake DOT?

Staking can help secure the network and may earn rewards, but it can also restrict access to your DOT and carries validator-related risks. Check the wallet and network rules before staking.

What is the market cap of Polkadot?

As of Nov 8, 2026, Polkadot had a market cap of about $1.53B, ranking #57 among cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation. Market cap is price multiplied by circulating supply, so it moves with the price.

What is the all-time high of DOT?

Polkadot's all-time high is $54.98, reached on Nov 4, 2021. Its all-time low is $0.7270 (Aug 18, 2026). Past prices say nothing about future returns.

What is the circulating supply of DOT?

As of Nov 8, 2026, about 1.71B DOT were in circulation, against a maximum supply of 2.1B.
