Owning Livepeer (LPT): Uses, Storage and Risks

LPT helps coordinate and secure Livepeer’s video network through staking, but it is not the token broadcasters use to pay for video work. Here’s what to check before holding, delegating or moving it.

What does holding LPT actually do?

LPT is Livepeer’s protocol token, used to stake and delegate stake in the network. It helps coordinate how video-processing work is routed among participating operators, called orchestrators, and helps secure the network. Holding LPT in a wallet does not by itself mean you are providing video services or earning income.

LPT is not the network’s payment token for video jobs. Broadcasters use ETH to pay for work, and network contributors can earn ETH in fees. Livepeer also describes protocol rewards for participants, but any rewards depend on participation and protocol rules; they are not guaranteed just because you own LPT.

The project is also associated with AI video workloads. Before treating LPT as a claim on that activity, check what role the token plays in the specific service you plan to use. Token ownership does not represent equity or a guaranteed share of project revenue.

What should you check before delegating LPT?

You can delegate LPT to an orchestrator to take part in the network’s delegated-stake system without running the video-processing infrastructure yourself. Operators stake LPT, and delegated stake helps determine how work is routed. You should check an operator’s performance, commission, reliability and operating terms before delegating; these can affect your results.

Delegation is not the same as a bank deposit. Staked tokens may be subject to protocol rules, delays or other limits on when you can withdraw them. Livepeer describes slashing for protocol violations, so delegated stake can carry loss risk if an operator behaves improperly or fails to meet requirements. Do not assume every operator has identical practices.

Rewards, if any, can change and are not guaranteed. Check the current Livepeer protocol rules and the interface you use for details about reward calculation, commissions, lockups and unbonding. If those terms are unclear, keep the tokens unstaked until you understand what can happen to them.

Which networks and wallets can hold LPT?

LPT is issued on Ethereum, Arbitrum and Harmony. These are separate networks, so a wallet address or token balance on one chain does not automatically mean you have the same accessible balance on another. Confirm the network and token contract in your wallet before receiving or sending LPT. A wrong-network transfer can be difficult or impossible to recover.

A self-custody wallet that supports the relevant network can hold tokens there; MetaMask is one commonly used option for Ethereum-compatible networks, but you still need the correct network and token details. Exchange custody is another route, where the platform controls the keys and may limit supported networks or withdrawals.

Keep your recovery phrase offline and private. Never share it with someone claiming they need it to verify, migrate or unlock your LPT. If you use a bridge or a wrapped representation, check which asset you will receive, the bridge’s trust assumptions and whether you can withdraw it through your chosen wallet or platform.

How much LPT exists, and can supply change?

As of 2026-11-08, Livepeer’s reported circulating and total supply were both about 49.7 million LPT. No maximum supply is listed. The figures can change: the protocol has described inflationary rewards, so token issuance and protocol changes may affect supply over time. Check current token and protocol details rather than treating today’s supply as fixed.

LPT’s market price and trading activity also move. On 2026-11-08, its reported price was about $1.34, with a market capitalization around $66.6 million. These are dated snapshots, not a valuation or forecast. The token reached a reported all-time high of $99.03 on 2021-11-09 and an all-time low of about $0.35 on 2019-10-26; past prices do not indicate what it may do next.

Supply figures alone do not tell you how much demand exists for Livepeer services or whether operators and users will keep participating. Consider token utility, network activity and your ability to tolerate losses separately.

What does it cost to move LPT?

Moving LPT costs depend on the network and transaction. On Ethereum, you generally pay gas in ETH; on Arbitrum or Harmony, transactions use that network’s fee rules and its required fee asset. Fees vary with network conditions, and an exchange may add its own withdrawal charge or impose minimums. Livepeer does not publish one universal transfer fee for LPT.

Bridging tokens between networks can add a separate service fee and may take time. A bridge also introduces its own technical and operational risks; do not assume a token displayed as LPT on another chain is identical in every respect to the Ethereum version. Check the receiving chain, contract and withdrawal support before starting.

For any transfer, first confirm the destination address and network, then consider a small test transaction if the amount and fee make that practical. A transaction sent to an incompatible network or incorrect address may not be recoverable. Keep enough of the network’s fee token available to complete the transfer or later move the LPT again.

What risks matter if you own LPT?

LPT’s value can fall sharply, and the token may be harder to sell or transfer when trading activity or platform support changes. The reported one-year price change was about -76% as of 2026-11-08, illustrating that losses can be substantial; it does not predict future performance. Do not rely on staking rewards to offset a price decline.

Staking and delegation add protocol and operator risks, including slashing described by Livepeer, changes to rules, and possible delays or restrictions when withdrawing stake. Using a bridge adds another point of failure, while exchange custody means you rely on that platform to safeguard and release your tokens. Smart-contract, wallet and network failures can also cause losses.

Livepeer’s project description explains the token’s role in coordinating and securing work, but that does not establish that every service provider’s pricing, payment terms or security controls meet your needs. Check those details directly before relying on a provider, and never share your recovery phrase or sign a transaction you do not understand.

How has Livepeer’s purpose developed?

Livepeer launched on 2018-10-01 as a project focused on decentralized video infrastructure. Its stated aim is to provide a network for live and on-demand video processing, with a protocol that coordinates participating operators through delegated stake. The project has also described AI video workloads as part of its network activity.

LPT’s role is distinct from the service-payment flow: broadcasters use ETH to pay for video work, while LPT is used for staking and work coordination. That distinction matters if you are assessing what token ownership provides. Holding LPT does not automatically give you access to a service, a share of a company, or a claim on fees paid by broadcasters.

For your own decision, focus on whether the current network has work you understand, how operators are compensated, and what risk and withdrawal terms apply to your chosen method of holding or delegating. The project’s historical purpose does not guarantee continued use or token demand.
