What can you do with OP?

OP is Optimism’s governance token. Holding it can let you take part in votes on protocol upgrades, funding decisions and other matters for the Optimism Collective. You can also delegate voting power, where governance arrangements support it, so another participant can vote on your behalf. Check the current proposal and delegation rules before relying on your tokens for a particular vote.

OP does not function like a share in a company: owning it does not give you a claim on Optimism’s revenue or profits. Chains built with the OP Stack contribute revenue to the Optimism Collective under a shared model, but that does not mean OP holders receive a direct payment. OP is also not the gas token for OP Mainnet; transactions there use ETH for network fees.

In practice, your reason to hold OP may be governance participation, access to a supported market, or both. Its market value can change sharply, and having OP does not guarantee influence over an outcome or a financial return.

Which chain and wallet should hold your OP?

OP is issued on Optimism, also called OP Mainnet. Optimism is an Ethereum Layer 2 network, and the wider Superchain is a group of chains built with the open-source OP Stack. Base, Unichain, Ink and World Chain are among the chains identified as part of this ecosystem; OP being used on one OP Stack chain does not mean the same token is automatically native to every chain.

You can store OP in an Ethereum-compatible wallet that supports the Optimism network. That can include software wallets and compatible hardware-wallet setups. Add or select the Optimism network in the wallet, and check that the asset is the OP token on the intended chain before receiving or sending it. A similarly named token or a bridged representation on another network may not be interchangeable with OP on Optimism.

Wallet support and available functions differ. For governance, confirm that the wallet or interface you use supports the relevant voting or delegation process. Keep your recovery phrase offline and private; anyone who gets it may be able to control the assets in the wallet.

How much OP exists, and what can change its value?

As of 2026-11-08, about 2.29 billion OP were circulating, out of a total and maximum supply of about 4.29 billion. The remaining difference between circulating and total supply is not the same as tokens immediately available to trade: distribution, vesting and governance decisions can affect when tokens enter circulation. Check the project’s current token information if you need a live supply figure.

OP’s market price is set by buyers and sellers, not by a fixed redemption value. Demand for governance participation, broader activity around Optimism and market-wide crypto conditions can all influence interest, while supply changes can affect the amount available to holders. These factors do not provide a reliable way to forecast the price.

The OP Stack’s chain revenue-sharing model directs contributions to the Optimism Collective, but OP holders should not treat that mechanism as a personal dividend or guaranteed source of value. The token’s price and the usefulness of its governance rights are separate considerations.

How do people get and store OP?

People generally obtain OP through a crypto exchange that supports the token, or through a token swap on a compatible network. Availability varies by location and platform. If you use a bridge to move assets to Optimism before swapping, check the destination network, token identity and bridge terms carefully. This is general information, not a recommendation to buy or sell.

For self-custody, receive OP to a wallet that supports Optimism and keep control of the recovery phrase. For exchange custody, the platform controls the wallet keys and its own deposit and withdrawal rules apply. Before depositing or withdrawing, confirm that the platform supports OP on the exact network you plan to use; sending to an unsupported chain or address can result in lost funds.

A small test transfer can help you check the address and network before sending a larger amount, though it adds another transaction fee. Never share your recovery phrase or sign a transaction you do not understand. A wallet prompt that requests broad permissions or an unfamiliar approval deserves extra scrutiny.

What does it cost to move OP?

Sending OP on OP Mainnet requires ETH for gas; OP itself does not pay the network fee. The fee varies with network conditions and the transaction being performed, so check the wallet’s fee estimate immediately before confirming. A transfer or contract interaction may cost a different amount from a simple token approval.

Moving OP between Ethereum and Optimism usually involves a bridge. You may pay fees on the sending network and again on the destination network; Ethereum-side gas can be a significant part of the total when congestion is high. Bridge providers may also apply their own charges or processing conditions. There is no single fixed fee that applies to every route or time.

Before bridging, verify the source and destination networks, the asset being moved, and the bridge’s withdrawal process. A transfer may not arrive instantly, and some routes require additional steps before assets are available on the other side. Avoid choosing a bridge based only on a low displayed fee: security, supported assets and the ability to recover funds matter too.

What could go wrong when you hold OP?

OP carries market risk: its price can fall substantially, and there is no guaranteed value or return. As of 2026-11-08, the token was about 76.6% below its price a year earlier; past performance does not predict what happens next. You may also face low liquidity or price differences between platforms, especially for a large transaction.

There are technical and governance risks as well. Optimism is an Ethereum Layer 2, so using it involves software, network and bridge dependencies in addition to Ethereum itself. A bridge can be a point of failure, and a mistake about the network or token contract can make assets difficult or impossible to recover. Governance outcomes may not match your preferences, and holding OP does not guarantee that your vote will determine a decision.

Use only wallets and services you understand, verify transaction details before signing, and keep recovery information secure. Do not treat OP Stack adoption or contributions to the Optimism Collective as proof that OP’s market value will rise.

How did OP become part of the Superchain?

Optimism developed as an Ethereum Layer 2, with OP Mainnet as its first chain. The OP token was introduced in 2022 as a governance token for the Optimism ecosystem. Since then, the project’s scope has included the Superchain: a growing network of chains built using the open-source OP Stack.

The ecosystem now includes chains such as Base, Unichain, Ink and World Chain. They use the OP Stack, but each chain is distinct; OP is not automatically the gas token or native asset on every one. The Superchain model also includes contributions from participating chains to the Optimism Collective, while OP holders use governance to shape decisions.

For an owner, the key distinction is that OP represents governance participation, while the OP Stack is the software framework and the Superchain is the broader network of chains. Changes to those systems may affect the ecosystem, but they do not create a guaranteed payment or redemption right for token holders.

By the numbers

Optimism in numbers

Optimism (OP) is ranked #147 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $232M and a price of $0.1011 as of Nov 8, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation is $434M, so roughly 53% of the eventual supply is in circulation today; tokens still to be released could add selling pressure.

The price was down 10.3% over 7 days, down 17.1% over 30 days, down 76.6% over the past year. It trades about 98% below its all-time high of $4.84, set on Mar 6, 2024.

About 2.29B OP are in circulation out of a maximum supply of 4.29B (53% issued).

24-hour trading volume was about $18.3M, or 7.9% of its market cap: moderate turnover.

OP is the native token of Optimism and Optimism. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.
