What does holding IOTA let you do?
Holding IOTA gives you the network’s native token, used for staking, network participation and validator rewards. IOTA is a DAG-based Layer 1 that supports smart contracts, digital assets and digital identity through the Move VM. You may encounter applications focused on trade documents, supply-chain data, business identity or asset transfers, but a token’s uses do not guarantee that any particular application will be adopted or remain active.
IOTA says network activity requires tokens to be paid and burned as fees. Applications can also sponsor transactions, so an end user may not always need to pay a fee directly. Storage deposits are described as refundable, which is different from a fee that is permanently spent. These features can affect how an application handles costs, but they do not remove the need to check what a specific app charges or requires. Staking also involves network and validator risks; rewards are not a guaranteed return.
Which networks and wallets support IOTA?
IOTA is native to the IOTA network and IOTA EVM. The token is issued on IOTA, while IOTA EVM is an additional supported chain environment. That distinction matters when you deposit, withdraw or transfer: a wallet or exchange supporting IOTA on one network may not support it on the other.
Use a wallet that explicitly supports the network you intend to use, and confirm the network shown by both the wallet and the sending service before transferring. Check that you control the recovery phrase or private keys if you want self-custody; an exchange-held balance is controlled through the exchange account instead. Wallet support can change, and no specific wallet is established here as the right choice. Be especially careful with EVM addresses, token representations and bridges: a similar-looking asset or address does not prove that a transfer will arrive on the network you expect. Start by checking the receiving service’s current deposit instructions.
How much IOTA exists, and what changes supply?
IOTA has no published maximum supply in the token facts stated here. The reported total supply is about 5.02 billion IOTA, with about 4.73 billion in circulation. These figures can change, so treat them as a dated snapshot rather than a fixed balance-sheet figure. As of 2026-11-08, the market capitalization was about $167 million and the fully diluted valuation about $178 million; both move with price and supply.
Token supply can change through network rules and activity. IOTA says fees for onchain activity are paid in IOTA and burned, reducing the tokens left in circulation over time. Staking rewards are another factor in how tokens are distributed. The project describes onchain governance as aligned with long-term network sustainability, but you should check the current network rules for the precise reward and supply mechanics. A burn mechanism does not by itself guarantee that a token’s market value will rise.
How do people get and store IOTA?
You can generally get a token through a service that lists it or through an onchain route supported by the relevant network. Availability varies by country, platform and chain, so check that the service supports the exact IOTA network you need before making a transfer. This is practical information, not a recommendation to buy.
For storage, you can keep IOTA in a custodial account or use a compatible self-custody wallet. With custody, the provider controls the keys and its account access and withdrawal rules apply. With self-custody, you control the keys, but losing the recovery phrase or signing a malicious transaction can make funds unrecoverable. Keep recovery details offline and private, and verify the wallet’s network and token display before sending funds. If you plan to stake, check how the wallet handles delegation, unstaking and rewards, and whether any lock-up or withdrawal delay applies under current network rules.
What can an IOTA transfer or bridge cost?
Moving IOTA can cost network fees, and the amount may depend on the transaction and current network conditions. IOTA’s design also includes refundable storage deposits: these are not necessarily the same as a permanently paid transaction fee. Some applications can sponsor transactions, which may shift the cost away from you, but sponsorship depends on the application and should not be assumed.
Moving value between IOTA and IOTA EVM may require a bridge or another supported route. A bridge can involve fees on the source and destination networks, and the service may charge separately. Transfers can also take time or fail if you select an unsupported network, use the wrong route, or interact with a compromised bridge. IOTA does not publish a single universal transfer or bridge cost in these facts. Before confirming, check the fee estimate, destination network, any minimum deposit, and whether the recipient supports that exact asset representation.
What risks should you weigh before holding IOTA?
IOTA’s delegated proof-of-stake model, onchain governance, application adoption and token economics all affect the risks of holding it. Network upgrades or outages could affect access and transfers; staking adds validator and protocol risks. A bridge or application may introduce separate smart-contract or operational vulnerabilities. If you hold IOTA through a custodian, you also take on that provider’s security, solvency and withdrawal risks. No token’s role in digital trade or supply-chain projects guarantees demand for the token.
IOTA was founded in 2015, making it a long-running crypto project, but age is not a safety guarantee. Its reported all-time high was about $5.25 on 2017-12-18, while its reported all-time low was about $0.0311 on 2026-07-31. Those historical extremes show substantial price volatility and do not indicate what the token will do next. Consider whether you can tolerate losing the amount you hold, and verify network and custody details before acting.

IOTA (IOTA) is ranked #189 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $167M and a price of $0.0354 as of Nov 8, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation is $178M, so roughly 94% of the eventual supply is in circulation today; tokens still to be released could add selling pressure.
The price was down 10.6% over 7 days, down 28.9% over 30 days, down 75.7% over the past year. It trades about 99% below its all-time high of $5.25, set on Dec 18, 2017.
About 4.73B IOTA are in circulation, from a total supply of 5.02B. No hard maximum supply is listed.
24-hour trading volume was about $3.94M, or 2.4% of its market cap: moderate turnover.
IOTA is the native token of IOTA EVM and IOTA. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.
