What can you use CELO for?

CELO is the native token of the Celo network, an Ethereum Layer 2. You may need it to pay network transaction fees, and it is used in Celo governance and staking. Celo is designed to support blockchain applications, including stablecoin and payment uses; holding CELO does not give you a claim on those applications or their assets.

If you hold CELO, its practical value to you depends on whether you use Celo apps, participate in governance or staking, or simply keep the token as an investment. Network activity and token utility do not guarantee that CELO will retain its market value. You can lose money if its price falls, and no token feature guarantees returns.

Which network and wallet should you use for CELO?

CELO is native to Celo, which operates as an Ethereum Layer 2. The token facts identify Celo as its issuing chain; they do not list other chains where CELO is issued. A token shown on another network may be a bridged or wrapped version, not the same asset held directly on Celo.

Before receiving or sending CELO, check that your wallet and the other party support the Celo network. A wallet may support many tokens but still require you to add or select the correct network. Sending to an incompatible network or address can make funds difficult or impossible to recover. If you use an exchange, confirm which withdrawal network it supports and match that network to your receiving wallet. Test with a small transfer first when practical. Network fees can change, so check the fee shown in your wallet before confirming.

How much CELO exists, and can supply grow?

CELO has a maximum supply of 1 billion tokens. As of 2026-11-08, about 610 million were in circulation, against a total supply of 1 billion. The difference between circulating and total supply matters: tokens not counted as circulating may enter circulation later, which can affect the balance between available supply and demand.

These figures are a dated snapshot, not a forecast. Supply and circulation can change, so check current token data before making a decision based on them. The maximum supply does not set a floor for CELO’s price or ensure that demand will grow. A large fixed supply can still lose value if buyers’ demand falls, and circulating supply alone does not show how much is actively traded or held by long-term owners.

How can you store CELO more safely?

For self-custody, choose a wallet that explicitly supports CELO on Celo. Keep your recovery phrase offline, private and backed up in a place you control. Anyone who gets the phrase may be able to take the assets; a wallet provider cannot restore a phrase you have lost. Never share it with someone claiming to provide support.

For larger holdings, consider a hardware wallet that supports the network, and verify the transaction details on the device before approving. For an exchange account, use a unique password and enable strong account security. In either case, check the destination address and network carefully. A mistaken transfer, lost recovery phrase, compromised device or stolen account can cause permanent losses. Do not approve a transaction you do not understand, and be wary of unexpected messages or sites asking you to connect your wallet.

What could go wrong when you hold CELO?

CELO’s price can move sharply, and you can lose some or all of the money you put into it. Its use for network fees, staking or governance does not remove market risk. Staking may also involve lock-up conditions or other network-specific rules, so check the terms shown by your wallet or staking provider before committing tokens. Avoid relying on advertised rewards without understanding where they come from and what risks apply.

There are also practical risks: sending CELO on the wrong network, signing a malicious contract, losing access to your wallet, or trusting a fake token or impersonation account. Check the token and network details before acting. Do not treat a past price high or low as a guide to what CELO will do next, and only hold an amount you can afford to lose.
