9Summits Review: Are Its DeFi Vaults Worth Using?

9Summits curates DeFi yield vaults and manages strategies for clients. Its non-custodial setup and published performance fees are useful to know, but check each vault’s underlying protocols and risks before depositing.

SkyBitcoins rating

Quick take

9Summits may suit experienced DeFi users who want curated exposure to crypto lending and yield strategies rather than managing allocations themselves. Its flagship vaults are non-custodial, and the published fee schedule has no management fee, though some vaults charge a share of profits. Before depositing, inspect the specific vault’s contracts, underlying protocols, withdrawal rules and current fees; vault returns are variable and capital can be lost.

Is it for you?

Who 9Summits suits

Good for

  • DeFi users seeking curated exposure to lending or yield strategies
  • Crypto holders who understand variable returns and smart-contract risk
  • Treasuries or protocols looking for external vault and lending-market management

Not for

  • Beginners who need guaranteed returns or help understanding DeFi lending risks
  • Users who require a disclosed licence, audit reports or clear KYC and withdrawal terms before depositing
  • Anyone seeking a fixed-rate or insured savings product

What can you do with 9Summits’ vaults?

9Summits is an onchain risk curator and vault manager, not a general-purpose exchange. Individual users can deposit into its Lagoon-managed flagship vaults, which cover cbBTC, ETH, USDC and EURC strategies. The firm says it selects and monitors DeFi opportunities, while its client work includes creating vaults and structuring lending markets for treasuries, protocols and asset managers.

Its stated protocol toolkit includes Lagoon, Morpho, Euler and Silo. The flagship vaults are intended to allocate assets to yield strategies, such as lending or staking-related activity; returns depend on the assets and protocols used. A vault deposit is not a fixed-rate account, and neither the curator nor a stated yield target guarantees your principal or return. Review the individual vault’s holdings and strategy before choosing it, because a shared curator does not make every vault’s risk identical.

What will a 9Summits deposit cost?

The published flagship fee schedule lists 20% performance fees and 0% management fees for cbBTC, ETH and USDC. The EURC flagship is listed at 0% for both. These terms may change, so confirm the current vault terms before depositing; performance fees reduce your gains when applicable and do not protect you from losses.

You should also account for transaction costs. Depositing, withdrawing or moving assets onchain can require network gas, and the protocols used by a strategy may have their own costs. 9Summits does not publish a general gas estimate or a complete fee breakdown covering every possible underlying protocol charge. The headline vault fee is therefore not necessarily the only cost you pay. Compare the vault’s current fee details with its strategy and withdrawal conditions, rather than judging it by an advertised APR alone.

How much should you trust 9Summits with funds?

The flagship vaults are described as non-custodial: you deposit directly into a vault contract rather than transferring funds to 9Summits to hold. That reduces reliance on the curator for custody, but your assets remain exposed to the vault contract, the protocols it uses, and the assets in its strategy. Exploits, oracle problems, liquidations, stablecoin depegs and other failures can cause losses.

9Summits says its approach includes protocol due diligence and continuous exposure monitoring, and that its founders have managed capital onchain since September 2020. However, it does not list audit reports, a licence or named team members on its site. Treat the curator’s risk process as a claim, not a substitute for independently checking the contracts and underlying platforms. There is no stated insurance or guarantee against losses.

What is it like to use a 9Summits vault?

Using a flagship vault means connecting a self-custody wallet and interacting with its vault contract on the relevant network. 9Summits identifies Ethereum, Avalanche, Base and Unichain as supported networks, but you should verify the specific vault’s chain and deposit asset before sending funds. A token on the wrong network may not be usable by the vault, and blockchain transactions are generally difficult to reverse.

The flagship vaults are managed on Lagoon. 9Summits also offers client vault and lending-market work involving Morpho, Euler and Silo, but those services do not mean every public vault is deployed on every named protocol. Its site does not publish general deposit or withdrawal limits, expected processing times, or KYC requirements. Check the individual vault interface and terms for those details before you approve a transaction.

Where does 9Summits fall short?

The main trade-off is delegation: you rely on 9Summits’ strategy choices and monitoring instead of selecting each lending market yourself. That can simplify DeFi participation, but adds curator and strategy risk. The vault can also inherit risks from several contracts or protocols, so a record of past returns does not tell you how it will perform in a different market.

Transparency has gaps that matter before you deposit. 9Summits does not publish audit reports or a licence on its site, and it does not set out general KYC, withdrawal timing or limit details. Fees are published for the flagship vaults, but network gas and other protocol costs remain relevant. If you cannot assess the underlying assets, contract permissions and withdrawal path, a simpler product with clearer disclosures may be a better fit.

How can you start with 9Summits more safely?

  1. Choose a specific vault and confirm its asset, network, underlying protocols and current strategy. Do not assume all flagship products have the same exposure.
  2. Read the vault’s current fee and withdrawal terms, including any performance fee, withdrawal restrictions and likely gas costs.
  3. Verify the vault contract and the underlying protocol contracts through trusted interfaces. Check whether independent audit reports are available for the contracts you will use.
  4. Connect a self-custody wallet on the correct network, and consider a small test deposit if the vault permits it. Review token approvals and avoid granting broader permissions than necessary.
  5. Deposit only an amount you can afford to lose. Monitor the position and confirm how to withdraw before relying on the funds being available at a particular time.

9Summits FAQs

Is 9Summits a custodial service?

9Summits’ flagship vaults are managed on Lagoon, and deposits go directly to vault contracts rather than to 9Summits. That limits curator custody of your funds, but does not remove smart-contract or underlying-protocol risk.

What fees does 9Summits charge?

The published flagship schedule shows 20% performance fees and 0% management fees for cbBTC, ETH and USDC vaults. EURC is listed with 0% performance and management fees; network gas and any underlying protocol charges may still apply.

Are 9Summits vaults audited or licensed?

9Summits does not list audit reports, a licence or KYC requirements on its site. That is not proof that a vault has never been audited or that no verification is required, so check the specific vault and its deposit process before connecting a wallet.

Which assets and protocols can I use with 9Summits?

The flagship strategies include cbBTC, ETH, USDC and EURC vaults on Lagoon. 9Summits also says it creates and manages vaults and lending markets using Morpho, Euler and Silo; check the individual vault for its live chain and protocol exposure.

How do I withdraw from a 9Summits vault?

You need a compatible self-custody wallet and the asset required by the vault. Review the vault’s withdrawal rules, supported network, contract details and fees before approving a deposit; 9Summits does not publish general withdrawal timing or limits.
