Uniswap Review: Is It Right for Your Token Swaps?

Uniswap is a non-custodial exchange for swapping tokens and supplying liquidity. App fees are zero, but pool fees and network gas can still apply, and you manage your own wallet risks.

SkyBitcoins rating

Quick take

Uniswap suits people who want to swap tokens from their own wallet or supply liquidity across supported networks. Its main draw is access to on-chain token pools without depositing funds with a centralized exchange, and the app states zero app fees. That does not make a swap free: pool fees and network gas may apply. Before connecting, verify you are using the genuine app, then check the token contract, network and full transaction cost before signing.

Is it for you?

Who Uniswap suits

Good for

  • Self-custody users swapping tokens across supported EVM networks
  • Traders who want to compare pool routes and review transaction costs before signing
  • DeFi users interested in supplying liquidity as well as swapping

Not for

  • People who want a platform to hold their funds, recover their keys or reverse mistaken transactions
  • Beginners unwilling to verify token contracts, review approvals and manage wallet security
  • Traders who need a guaranteed quote or do not want variable pool fees, gas and slippage

What can you do on Uniswap?

Uniswap lets you swap one crypto token for another through on-chain liquidity pools instead of a traditional order book. You connect a wallet, choose the tokens and network, review the quoted trade, then sign the transaction. The app lists Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum, Polygon and Unichain among more than 15 supported networks. A token available on one chain is not automatically available on another, so check the network as well as the token contract address.

You can also visit the pool feature to provide assets to liquidity pools. This is a different activity from swapping: pool deposits expose you to smart-contract and market risks, and returns are not guaranteed. The app also offers a portfolio view and token search. UNI is Uniswap’s token, but holding UNI is not required just to make a wallet-based swap.

What will a Uniswap swap cost you?

Uniswap states that its app charges zero fees for swaps. That is not the same as a zero-cost trade. Liquidity pools can charge a fee, and your wallet must also pay the network’s transaction fee (gas). Gas changes with network demand and may be different on Ethereum than on a layer-2 network. A trade routed through multiple pools can have a different total cost from a direct pool swap.

Before signing, review the quoted output, any displayed pool or route fee, and the estimated network cost in your wallet. The final amount can also be affected by slippage: the market price may move between the quote and execution, particularly for thinly traded tokens or larger orders. Do not assume that choosing a network with cheaper gas makes a token safe or a pool liquid enough for your trade.

How much trust should you place in Uniswap?

With a wallet-based swap, you keep control of your private keys rather than depositing funds into a centralized exchange account. That removes one kind of custody risk, but it leaves you responsible for wallet security and every transaction you approve. On-chain trades are generally difficult or impossible to reverse. A malicious token, fake app, phishing message or overly broad token approval can put funds at risk.

Uniswap does not identify a current audit or licence in its app information, and the app does not offer deposit protection. Treat the interface and smart contracts as separate parts of the risk: verify you are using the genuine Uniswap app, check the token contract, and review approvals before signing. Use documentation for the specific contracts and network you plan to use; do not infer that every token or pool accessible through the interface has been vetted. Only connect a wallet you control and can secure.

What is using Uniswap like day to day?

The basic flow is familiar if you have used a crypto wallet: connect, select a network and tokens, inspect the quote, then approve the transaction in your wallet. The app lists Uniswap Wallet for iOS and Android, as well as a Chrome option. Other listed connection choices include WalletConnect, MetaMask, Coinbase Wallet and Binance Wallet. Keep your recovery phrase offline; a wallet app or browser extension does not replace safe key storage.

Network choice affects both availability and transaction costs. Make sure the wallet is on the same chain as the assets you intend to trade, and check that you have the network’s native token for gas. If a quote looks unusually poor, pause rather than signing quickly: low pool liquidity, slippage settings and a wrong-token selection can all change the outcome. A wallet confirmation is your final chance to inspect what you are authorizing.

When might another exchange suit you better?

Uniswap is less suitable if you want an intermediary to hold funds, reset a password or help undo a transaction. Self-custody gives you control, but mistakes and stolen recovery phrases can be costly. The app also cannot make every listed token a sound trade: anyone may create tokens, and unfamiliar contracts can be fraudulent or have little usable liquidity.

Fees and execution are not fixed across all trades. Pool charges, gas, slippage and routing can make a swap more expensive than the zero-app-fee headline suggests. Supplying liquidity is more complex than a simple swap and can lead to losses as token prices move. Uniswap does not present a licence or deposit guarantee for this wallet-based service. Check local rules before using crypto services, and never risk funds you cannot afford to lose.

5 steps

How to start with Uniswap

  1. 1

Use the genuine Uniswap app and choose a supported network; do not follow unsolicited links or ads to connect your wallet.

  2. 2

Connect a wallet you control, and confirm it is on the same network as the tokens you plan to use. Keep your recovery phrase private and offline.

  3. 3

Check the token contract address and pool liquidity, especially for unfamiliar or newly issued tokens.

  4. 4

Review the quoted output, pool or route fees, slippage and wallet gas estimate before signing. Reject any approval you do not understand.

  5. 5

For a first interaction, consider a small transaction and check the result on the correct network before proceeding with more funds.

Uniswap FAQs

Does Uniswap charge fees?

Uniswap states that swaps have zero app fees. You may still pay the liquidity pool’s fee and network gas, with the total depending on the pool, route and chain. Check the transaction details before approving it.

Which networks does Uniswap support?

Uniswap lists Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum, Polygon and Unichain, and says it supports more than 15 networks. Confirm the selected network and token contract before swapping; a token’s name or ticker alone is not enough to verify it.

Do you need an account or KYC to use Uniswap?

You connect a wallet such as MetaMask, Coinbase Wallet or Binance Wallet, or use WalletConnect. This is a wallet-based service rather than a conventional exchange account where you deposit funds for the platform to hold.

Is Uniswap safe to use?

Uniswap swaps are made from a connected wallet, so you remain responsible for your keys and for approving transactions. That avoids handing custody to a centralized exchange, but it does not remove smart-contract, phishing, malicious-token or mistaken-approval risks.

Can you use Uniswap on mobile?

Yes. The app lists Uniswap Wallet for iOS and Android, plus a Chrome option. It also supports connecting other wallets, including through WalletConnect.
