THORChain DEX Review: Is It Right for Cross-Chain Swaps?

THORChain is a cross-chain swap protocol for moving crypto between supported networks without a centralized exchange. Its variable fees and protocol risks mean you should check the quote and destination details before sending.

By the SkyBitcoins review team · Updated

Quick take

THORChain suits experienced self-custody users who want to swap between supported chains without routing through a centralized exchange or relying on a bridge-wrapped asset. Its main advantage is on-chain cross-chain swapping, but the total cost varies with gas, pool liquidity and swap size. Before sending, check the live route, the final output after fees, and that your destination address matches the receiving network.

Who THORChain DEX suits

Good for

  • Crypto users who want to swap between supported chains without using a centralized exchange
  • Bitcoin holders looking for native-asset swap routes to other supported networks
  • Experienced self-custody users comfortable checking on-chain routes, fees and destination addresses

Not for

  • Beginners who need a simple, reversible exchange experience or hands-on transaction support
  • Users who need fixed, predictable fees before starting a swap
  • Anyone seeking a licensed custodial exchange with account recovery

What can you swap with THORChain?

THORChain is infrastructure for swapping crypto between supported blockchains. You can use it to trade, for example, Bitcoin for an asset on another supported network, with settlement on-chain rather than through a centralized exchange. The protocol is designed for native-asset swaps and says it does not require bridge-wrapped tokens for these routes. Its published asset list also includes tokens that are themselves wrapped or issued on a particular chain, such as WBTC on Ethereum, so check the exact asset and route rather than assuming every token is native to its original network. Swaps are permissionless at the protocol level, but you access them through a compatible wallet or interface. Different interfaces may offer different routes, assets or added features; availability is not guaranteed for every pair. Confirm both the source asset and destination chain before you send.

What will a THORChain swap cost you?

There is no single fixed swap fee. You pay the source network’s gas to send the transaction. THORChain deducts the destination network’s gas and a liquidity fee from the swap output; those amounts depend on network conditions, pool depth and the size of your trade. A shallow pool or larger swap can affect the price you receive, so compare the quoted output with the amount you expect before proceeding. An app or wallet that uses THORChain can also add a custom fee. That means the same route may cost different amounts depending on the interface. Check the quote’s estimated output and any fee breakdown immediately before sending, and keep enough of the source asset for network gas. THORChain does not publish one universal fee figure that applies to every swap.

How much should you trust THORChain with your funds?

The protocol says transactions execute on-chain and are secured by a decentralized network of nodes. It also describes its software as open-source and says swaps can be verified on-chain. These are useful properties, but they do not make a swap risk-free: smart-contract or network failures, pool liquidity changes, and sending funds to the wrong address can still cost you money. Three audits are listed, but their scope, dates and findings are not specified here, so do not treat the count alone as proof that every component or current version has been audited. THORChain does not identify a licence in its published material. The protocol says it does not require KYC, but third-party swap interfaces may apply their own checks or rules. Review the protocol’s audit and security information and the interface’s terms before using it, and start with an amount you can afford to lose.

What should you check before sending a swap?

THORChain is not a conventional exchange account: the protocol says you do not need to register or connect a wallet to a website. You still need a self-custody wallet that can send the source asset and receive the destination asset, plus a compatible interface or integration to create the swap. The protocol lists Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP Ledger, BNB Smart Chain, Solana, TRON, Zcash, Dogecoin, Bitcoin Cash, Litecoin, Avalanche, Cosmos, Base and THORChain; actual token and route availability depends on liquidity and the interface. Before sending, verify that the deposit instructions show the correct source network and asset, and double-check the destination address and network. Keep a record of the transaction ID so you can follow its on-chain progress. The project does not publish a guaranteed completion time, so do not rely on a swap arriving by a particular deadline.

When should you choose another way to trade?

THORChain’s cross-chain focus is useful if you want to move between native assets, but it is not a fit for every trading need. It does not provide the same account recovery, customer protections or familiar order-book experience as a centralized exchange. Fees and execution depend on gas, liquidity and the route, so a swap may be a poor choice when you need a guaranteed output or a firm arrival time. Supported coins and chains can also differ between interfaces, and some listed tokens are chain-specific rather than native coins. The protocol does not require KYC, but an interface can have separate requirements; check those before you begin. Use the live quote to decide whether the expected output is acceptable, and do not send funds if the route, token or destination address is unclear. THORChain is best approached as self-custody infrastructure, not as a place to leave a balance.

5 steps

How to start with THORChain DEX

  1. 1

Choose a compatible self-custody wallet and an interface that supports the asset pair you want; check whether the interface has its own terms or verification requirements.

  2. 2

Confirm the source token, source network, destination token and destination network in the live swap route.

  3. 3

Review the estimated output, source gas, destination gas, liquidity fee and any interface fee before sending.

  4. 4

Check the destination address carefully and make sure it can receive the selected token on the selected network.

  5. 5

For a first use, consider a small test swap, then track the transaction on-chain before sending a larger amount.

THORChain DEX FAQs

Do you need KYC to use THORChain?

The THORChain protocol does not require an account or KYC, and you can use a self-custody wallet. A third-party app or wallet that routes swaps through THORChain may set its own requirements.

Which networks and coins does THORChain support?

THORChain lists support for Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP Ledger, BNB Smart Chain, Solana, TRON, Zcash, Dogecoin, Bitcoin Cash, Litecoin, Avalanche, Cosmos, Base and THORChain. Which assets you can swap depends on the available pools and the interface you use, so check the live swap route before sending.

What does a THORChain swap cost?

You pay gas on the network you send from. THORChain also deducts destination-chain gas and a liquidity fee from the output; the amounts vary with network conditions, swap size and pool depth. An interface may add its own fee, so review the final quote.

Is THORChain safe to use?

The protocol says swaps execute on-chain and are secured by a decentralized node network. Three audits are listed, but their scope and findings are not specified here; audits do not remove smart-contract, network or liquidity risk. Only swap an amount you can afford to lose.

Do you have to connect a wallet to swap on THORChain?

You can use a self-custody wallet, and the protocol says connecting a wallet to a website is optional. You still need to send the source asset to the swap route and provide a valid destination address; check the network and quote carefully before confirming.
