Aave Review: Is Its Crypto Lending Worth Using?
Aave is an established crypto lending protocol for supplying assets to earn variable interest or borrowing against collateral. The main trade-offs are changing rates, transaction costs and the risk of liquidation.

Quick take
Aave suits crypto holders who understand DeFi and want to supply assets for variable interest or borrow against collateral. Its main appeal is access to open, onchain lending markets without handing custody to a conventional lender. Before depositing, check the exact market, asset, current rate, withdrawal liquidity and blockchain transaction costs. Borrowers should also understand liquidation thresholds: a falling collateral value can lead to forced selling and losses.

What can you do with Aave?
Aave lets you supply supported crypto assets to onchain liquidity markets and earn interest from borrowers. You can also borrow an asset by supplying collateral, usually worth more than the amount borrowed. This can give you liquidity without selling your holdings, but it creates an ongoing obligation to maintain enough collateral.
Markets differ in which assets they accept and how they can be used. Aave describes options ranging from general-purpose markets to isolated markets for particular collateral strategies. Check the selected market’s parameters rather than assuming an asset behaves the same way everywhere. Some Aave products also present savings-style experiences, but the displayed yield is not a guaranteed bank rate. The protocol’s main offer is flexible crypto lending and borrowing, not a fixed-term deposit or a promise of stable returns.
What will supplying or borrowing cost?
There is no single fixed Aave interest rate. Supply and borrowing rates move with the particular market and its liquidity, so a rate displayed when you deposit may change afterward. Treat any advertised or simulated yield as a snapshot, not a promise. The amount you earn also depends on the asset and how long it remains supplied.
You must pay blockchain transaction costs when you interact with the protocol; these depend on the network and its conditions. Borrowing adds interest that accrues over time. Aave does not publish one flat fee covering every market and action, so review the transaction and market details before confirming. If you borrow, include the changing interest cost and the possibility of liquidation in your plan. A high headline supply rate is not a measure of the total risk or a guarantee that the strategy will be profitable.
How much protection do Aave deposits have?
Aave’s protocol is non-custodial: supplied tokens are held in publicly accessible smart contracts rather than a conventional account controlled by a lender. The project says the code is open source, has had multiple third-party audits and formal verification, and that changes go through onchain governance. It also describes an ongoing bug bounty and technical risk reviews. These are meaningful safeguards, but audits cannot prove that software is free of flaws or prevent every loss.
Your funds still face smart-contract bugs, faulty or delayed price data, governance decisions, collateral failures and problems on the underlying blockchain. If a contract is exploited or a market becomes impaired, there may be no central operator able to restore your assets. Aave does not publish a protocol financial-services licence or government deposit guarantee. Treat audit claims as one part of your assessment, not as insurance.
What is using Aave like day to day?
Aave is a wallet-based DeFi protocol, so using it means choosing a blockchain, connecting a compatible wallet and approving transactions yourself. The Aave site presents an app and a separate Pro experience, and lists Ethereum among the public networks where the protocol operates. Check the network and exact market in the app before signing: assets with similar names can exist on different chains, and sending a token to the wrong network can make recovery difficult.
The transaction itself depends on blockchain confirmation time and network congestion; Aave does not control either. You will need enough of the network’s native token to pay transaction costs. The site also promotes an iOS app, but you should verify that any app you use is the official one. Unlike a custodial service, Aave does not provide a password reset for a lost wallet or reverse an onchain transaction.
What can go wrong with an Aave loan?
Borrowing on Aave is overcollateralized, but collateral value can fall quickly. If your position crosses its liquidation threshold, liquidators may repay some of your debt and take collateral under the market’s rules. That can lock in a loss even if you expected the asset to recover later. Interest also continues to accrue, and a thinly traded asset or volatile market can make a position harder to manage.
Before borrowing, review the market’s collateral factors, liquidation threshold, available liquidity and oracle-related parameters. Leave a meaningful safety margin rather than borrowing up to the maximum. Keep enough funds available to repay or add collateral, and monitor the position when markets are volatile. Supplying assets has different risks: withdrawals may depend on available liquidity, and the supplied asset itself can lose value. Do not treat Aave as a substitute for an emergency fund or use money you cannot afford to lose.
How should you start using Aave safely?
Start with a small amount and verify each choice before signing. You are interacting with smart contracts, so a mistaken network, token or approval can have lasting consequences.
- Open Aave through its official app or interface and confirm the domain or app publisher independently.
- Connect a wallet you control, then select the intended network and market.
- Read the asset’s current supply or borrow rate, market parameters, liquidity and any transaction costs.
- For supplying, confirm the token and amount. For borrowing, review collateral requirements and liquidation thresholds before choosing an amount.
- Check the wallet transaction details, keep funds for network fees, and confirm only if they match your intent.
- Save the transaction records and monitor rates, collateral health and market conditions afterward.
Aave is not a bank account: there is no guaranteed rate, and transactions may not be reversible.
4 steps
How to start with Aave
- 1
Reach Aave through its official app or interface and verify it before connecting your wallet.
- 2
Choose the correct network, market and asset; check current rates, liquidity and transaction costs.
- 3
Start with a small supply or a conservatively sized borrow, and inspect the wallet transaction before signing.
- 4
If you borrow, leave a collateral buffer and monitor the position for rate changes and liquidation risk.
Aave FAQs
What is Aave used for?
Aave is a non-custodial lending protocol built from smart contracts on public blockchains. You can supply supported crypto assets to liquidity markets and earn interest, or borrow assets by posting collateral.
How much does it cost to use Aave?
Supply and borrowing rates vary by asset and market conditions, so the rate shown can change. You also pay the blockchain’s transaction costs, and borrowing may expose you to liquidation if your collateral loses value or your position no longer meets the market’s requirements.
Is Aave safe to use?
Aave says its protocol code is open source and has undergone multiple third-party audits and formal verification. That reduces some risks but does not eliminate smart-contract, oracle, collateral, governance or blockchain risks. Aave does not publish a financial-services licence for the protocol.
Does Aave require KYC?
Aave does not publish one universal KYC policy for every way of accessing the protocol. Wallet-based smart-contract use differs from a conventional exchange account, but interface providers and local rules may impose their own requirements or restrictions.
What is the AAVE token for?
AAVE is used in Aave governance, including voting on protocol proposals. Aave also describes AAVE staking in its Safety Module as a way to help backstop a shortfall event; staking carries risk and should not be treated as a guaranteed return.
