Nolus Protocol Review: Is Fixed-Rate Margin Worth It?
Nolus offers fixed-rate, asset-backed spot margin trading, with up to 5x leverage and partial liquidations. Check the borrowing rate and liquidation terms before opening a position.
By the SkyBitcoins review team · Updated
Quick take
Nolus may suit traders who want leveraged spot exposure with a borrowing rate locked when they open, rather than variable funding fees. Its asset-backed positions and partial liquidations are useful safeguards, not guarantees against losses. Before depositing or opening a position, check the live borrowing rate, collateral requirements, liquidation thresholds and any transaction costs; Nolus does not publish a complete fee schedule.

What can you do with Nolus?
Nolus is a DeFi lending and spot-margin protocol. You can open a leveraged position using supported assets such as SOL, BTC and ETH, with up to 5x leverage advertised. Nolus says the position is backed by the underlying asset itself: for example, a long position holds the purchased asset rather than a synthetic version. You can close a position to redeem that asset or settle in stablecoins.
The borrowing rate is set when you open and stays fixed for that position. Nolus also promotes supplying assets to earn interest from borrowing activity. Returns for suppliers depend on demand: if borrowing lags behind supply, Nolus says it pauses new deposits to limit idle capital. It says supplier returns come from borrowing interest rather than token emissions.
This is still leveraged trading, not a way to remove market risk. If prices move against you, your collateral can be liquidated. Treat the advertised safeguards as risk controls, not a promise that a position will remain profitable.
What will a Nolus position cost you?
Nolus advertises no funding fees and a borrowing rate fixed for the life of a position. That can make borrowing costs more predictable than products where rates change continuously. But the rate you receive is set when you open, and a fixed rate is not necessarily a low rate. Compare it with the expected time you plan to hold the position and the potential return before borrowing.
Nolus does not publish a complete, universal schedule of borrowing rates and other costs in its general product information. Check the app for the current rate, transaction costs and any market-specific charges before confirming. Blockchain transactions may also involve network fees. If you supply assets, your return depends on borrowing demand and utilization; it is not a guaranteed yield.
Partial liquidations are described as having no penalty fee, but that does not mean liquidation is cost-free in every sense: a portion of your position is sold, and you can lose exposure or value as the market moves. Work out your downside using the position details shown at the time, not headline leverage alone.
How much trust should you place in Nolus?
Nolus describes its protocol as open source and non-custodial, meaning the protocol is designed to operate without taking custody of users’ funds. That can reduce reliance on a company holding assets, but it does not remove smart-contract, wallet, oracle or market risks. Review the contracts and understand the position mechanics before depositing; a non-custodial design does not guarantee that software will behave as intended.
Nolus’s homepage says the protocol has three independent security reviews. A protocol directory lists two audits, so the count is not consistent across listings. Read the reports to confirm which code and versions were examined, when reviews took place, and whether any findings remain unresolved. Nolus also advertises a bug bounty.
Nolus says it has operated since 2023 without security incidents. Separately, it published a post-mortem for a service interruption that began on March 23, 2024, after a surge in requests to open or close leases. That was a service availability issue, not evidence of a security breach, but it is a reminder that access can be disrupted.
What should you check before connecting a wallet?
Nolus’s homepage presents its spot-margin product as trading on Solana. Other protocol listings associate Nolus with Solana, Nolus, Neutron and Osmosis, so confirm the network and asset support in the app rather than assuming every feature works on every listed chain. You will need a compatible wallet and the assets required for the market you choose; the exact wallet options are not specified in the product information here.
A typical start is to connect your wallet, select a supported market, review the borrowing rate and collateral terms, then confirm the position in your wallet. For lending, check the current supply rate and whether deposits are open. Before signing, verify the network, token and transaction details in your wallet.
Nolus also advertises an account-focused assistant called Kai, intended to answer questions about positions, rates and liquidation risk. Treat its answers as a convenience, not a substitute for checking the position data and protocol terms yourself. No mobile-app availability or transaction-speed guarantee is published.
Can partial liquidations keep your position safe?
Nolus says it uses partial liquidations: when a position becomes unhealthy, only part is sold to bring the loan back toward health, rather than automatically erasing the whole position. It also describes a Market Anomaly Guard that simulates liquidations and pauses them if a venue’s quote is far below the oracle price; if the price recovers, the liquidation can be cancelled. These mechanisms may reduce the impact of some sharp price moves, but they cannot prevent losses when the market keeps moving against you.
The protocol’s advertised maximum leverage is high enough to magnify both gains and losses. A small move in the wrong direction can put collateral at risk, and partial liquidation can leave you with a smaller position at an unfavorable time. Check collateral requirements, liquidation triggers and how the system handles volatile markets before opening.
Do not borrow more than you can afford to lose. If you cannot monitor the position or tolerate its liquidation, unleveraged trading or no position may be a better fit.
Who should choose something other than Nolus?
Nolus is best suited to users who understand collateralized borrowing and want a fixed borrowing rate for a leveraged spot position. It is less suitable if you need predictable total costs before seeing a live quote, since Nolus does not publish a complete fee schedule or a single rate that applies to all markets. Supplier returns also vary with borrowing demand, and Nolus can pause new deposits when utilization is low.
The product is not the same as buying an asset outright: leverage adds borrowing obligations and liquidation risk. Nor does an asset-backed position make its value stable; the underlying asset can fall sharply. Network support and available markets should be confirmed in the app, as listings identify several chains while the homepage centers its margin product on Solana.
Before using Nolus, read the audit reports, inspect the terms for your specific market and make a small, affordable first transaction if you proceed. Never rely on a projected yield or an assistant’s estimate as a guaranteed outcome.
