What can you do with ALGO?
ALGO is the native token of Algorand, a layer-1 blockchain for payments and smart-contract applications. You can use it to pay Algorand network fees, transfer value, and interact with apps or digital assets built on the network. Algorand uses Pure Proof-of-Stake, a protocol in which ALGO holders can take part in the process that selects participants for consensus.
Holding ALGO does not, by itself, guarantee income. Governance or other participation programs may have their own rules, timelines, and reward terms, so check the current requirements before committing tokens. Developers can build Algorand applications using tools that include Python, and the network supports tokenized assets and smart contracts. That does not mean every ALGO holder has rights in a real-world asset: those rights depend on the specific asset and its issuer.
For you as a holder, the practical question is whether you need ALGO for a transfer, an app, or network participation. If you only want to store value, remember that its market price can move sharply and is not fixed by the network.
Which chain and wallets support ALGO?
ALGO is native to the Algorand blockchain; it is not an asset originally issued on Ethereum or another chain. Algorand supports its own tokens and applications, but those are distinct from ALGO. A token labelled “ALGO” on another network may be a wrapped or bridged representation rather than native ALGO. Check the network shown by the sending and receiving services before transferring.
Wallet options include Algorand-focused apps such as Pera Wallet and Defly, as well as hardware-wallet setups that support Algorand, including Ledger. Features differ: some wallets let you connect to apps, while others focus on holding and sending. A balance shown at an exchange is held through that service, not in a self-custody wallet you control.
Before sending, confirm that the receiving wallet supports Algorand and can access the correct account. Keep your recovery phrase offline and private; anyone who gets it may be able to control the assets. For a first transfer, a small test can help you catch a network or address mismatch before moving a larger amount.
How much ALGO exists, and what affects supply?
ALGO has a maximum supply of 10 billion. As of November 8, 2026, about 9.08 billion were in circulation, and the reported total supply was also about 9.08 billion. Supply figures can change as tokens are released or otherwise accounted for, so treat them as a dated snapshot rather than a permanent count.
The same date’s market data put ALGO at about $0.0945, with a market capitalization of roughly $858 million. Those figures move with the market and do not tell you what the network will be worth later. A capped maximum also does not prevent price declines or guarantee demand.
ALGO is used for network fees and consensus participation, while governance and other network programs may affect how holders choose to use it. Do not assume that simply keeping tokens in a wallet earns a return. Check the rules of any participation program or service, including whether tokens must be committed, for how long, and what risks or conditions apply.
How do you get and store ALGO?
You can obtain ALGO through a crypto exchange or receive it from another holder, where those options are available to you. Services set their own identity checks, payment methods, withdrawal rules, and charges; read those terms before sending funds. This is general information, not a recommendation to buy or sell.
To hold ALGO yourself, set up an Algorand-compatible wallet and back up its recovery phrase securely before transferring. Never share the phrase with a person or website claiming it is needed to verify, unlock, or recover your funds. If you keep ALGO with a custodian, the service controls the keys and may set limits on withdrawals or access.
Algorand accounts can have a minimum-balance requirement that depends on the assets and applications associated with the account. Adding assets or using apps can therefore require more ALGO to remain in the account; the amount can vary with account activity and network rules. Check the wallet’s current balance requirements before moving all your ALGO out, especially if the account still holds other assets or has app relationships.
What does it cost to move ALGO?
An ALGO transfer on Algorand requires a network fee, generally paid in ALGO. Fees on the network are commonly low, but the exact amount can depend on the transaction and current network conditions. Check the fee shown in your wallet before signing; an app interaction or transaction involving additional data may not cost the same as a simple transfer. Keep a small ALGO balance available if you plan to use the account.
A transfer between two Algorand addresses does not need a bridge. If you move a wrapped or bridged version between networks, you may face a bridge charge as well as fees on the source and destination networks. The receiving network’s token may not be interchangeable with native ALGO without the appropriate bridge or redemption process. Bridges also introduce separate technical and custody risks.
Exchanges may charge withdrawal fees or impose minimums that differ from the underlying network fee. Before confirming, compare the selected network, destination address, amount received, and total charges. A transfer sent to an incompatible address or network may be difficult or impossible to recover.
What risks should you check before holding ALGO?
ALGO carries ordinary crypto-market risk: its price can fall, and you could lose some or all of the value you put into it. The market figures on November 8, 2026, showed a price far below its earlier peak, but past prices do not predict what happens next. Network use, competing blockchains, regulation, and broader market conditions can all affect demand.
Self-custody brings operational risk. Losing your recovery phrase or signing a malicious transaction can put funds beyond recovery. With an exchange or other custodian, you instead depend on that service’s security, solvency, and withdrawal policies. Smart contracts and bridges can also contain faults or be exploited; holding a token connected to an app does not make that app safe.
Be cautious of unsolicited messages, fake wallet support, promises of guaranteed yield, and sites asking for your recovery phrase. Verify the asset and network before sending, and understand any lock-up or reward conditions before joining a program. Do not treat a high advertised return as proof that funds are protected.
What does ALGO’s history tell you?
Algorand’s main network launched in 2019, and ALGO’s recorded all-time high in the supplied market history was about $3.56 on June 20, 2019. Its recorded low was about $0.0757 on July 29, 2026. As of November 8, 2026, ALGO was about $0.0945. These are historical reference points, not targets or forecasts.
The gap between those figures is a reminder that ALGO has experienced substantial price volatility. A token’s early high does not establish what it should be worth today, and a price recovery from a low is never assured. If you are assessing your holdings, consider your own time horizon, need for liquidity, and ability to withstand losses rather than relying on an old peak.
Algorand is designed as a general-purpose blockchain, with support for payments, smart contracts, and tokenized assets. The network’s technical capabilities do not guarantee that applications will attract users or that ALGO’s market value will rise. Keep the distinction clear between what the protocol enables and what any particular project actually delivers.
