Owning ZIL: Uses, Storage and Risks

ZIL pays for activity on Zilliqa, but it also exists on BNB Chain and is tied to a changing network transition. Check the chain, supply and custody risks before moving or storing it.

What can you use ZIL for?

ZIL is the native token of the Zilliqa network. You use it to pay for transactions and smart-contract activity on that chain; it can also be held or transferred. The network was designed around sharding, which divides transaction processing among groups so work can happen in parallel. That design is intended to help the network handle activity, but it does not guarantee low fees, fast transactions or continued demand for ZIL.

Before sending or using ZIL, check what you need it for: a transfer, an on-chain application, or simply holding it. Application support and transaction costs can differ by network and over time. ZIL’s role as a network token does not make it a claim on company profits or a promise of a particular return.

Which networks can hold your ZIL?

ZIL is native to Zilliqa and is also issued on BNB Chain. These are separate networks: a ZIL balance on one chain is not automatically available on the other. When you withdraw from an exchange or send between wallets, match the receiving address and selected network exactly. A transfer sent using the wrong network may not arrive in a form you can access.

Zilliqa has described a move from its independent Layer 1 network toward an Ethereum Layer 2. Treat that transition as a reason to check current project instructions before bridging, moving tokens or choosing an app. Don’t assume that a token, wallet or application working on the earlier network will work the same way after a change. Confirm the destination network, any conversion or bridge steps, and whether the receiving wallet supports it before sending a meaningful amount.

How much ZIL exists?

ZIL has a maximum supply of 21 billion tokens. As of 2026-11-08, about 19.51 billion were circulating and about 20.64 billion were listed as total supply. Circulating supply is the portion counted as circulating; total supply can include tokens not currently circulating. The maximum is a stated cap, not the amount currently in circulation.

These figures can change as tokens enter circulation, so treat them as a dated snapshot rather than a live balance. Supply alone does not tell you what ZIL is worth or whether it will be easy to sell. If you are comparing the token’s market value with its fully diluted valuation, remember that the latter estimates value assuming the maximum supply is counted at the current price; it is not a forecast.

How should you store ZIL safely?

You can keep ZIL in a wallet that explicitly supports the network where your tokens are held, or leave it with an exchange that supports ZIL. For self-custody, check that the wallet supports the correct chain—not just the ZIL ticker—and that you can recover the account before transferring a larger amount. A small test transfer can help you catch an address or network mismatch.

Keep your recovery phrase offline and private. Anyone who gets it may be able to control the wallet, and support staff should not need you to disclose it. Use a device you keep updated, protect access with a strong passcode, and beware of fake wallet apps and messages asking you to connect or approve a transaction. Exchange custody avoids managing a recovery phrase, but leaves access dependent on the provider.

What could go wrong when you hold ZIL?

ZIL can lose value sharply, and past prices do not indicate what it will be worth next. Network migration adds practical uncertainty: wallet support, applications and token-transfer routes can change. Before using a bridge or moving funds during a transition, verify the current route and destination through official project channels. Bridges and smart contracts can have vulnerabilities, and transactions are generally difficult to reverse.

There is also the risk of sending ZIL on the wrong chain, losing access to a self-custody wallet, or relying on an exchange that suspends deposits or withdrawals. Do not treat a maximum supply, sharding design or technical roadmap as protection against these risks. Only commit funds you can afford to lose, and check transaction details before approving them.

By the numbers

Zilliqa in numbers

Zilliqa (ZIL) is ranked #601 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $32.3M and a price of $0.001654 as of Nov 8, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation is $34.1M, so roughly 95% of the eventual supply is in circulation today; tokens still to be released could add selling pressure.

The price was down 12.7% over 7 days, down 50.0% over 30 days, down 79.6% over the past year. It trades about 99% below its all-time high of $0.2554, set on May 6, 2021.

About 19.51B ZIL are in circulation out of a maximum supply of 21B (93% issued).

24-hour trading volume was about $5.84M, or 18% of its market cap: high turnover.

ZIL is the native token of Zilliqa; it also has token contracts on BNB Chain. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.

What is ZIL used for?

ZIL is used to pay for transactions and smart-contract activity on the Zilliqa network. It can also be held or transferred, but that does not guarantee demand or value.

Is ZIL available on BNB Chain?

ZIL is native to Zilliqa and is also issued on BNB Chain. They are separate networks, so select the network that matches the receiving address and wallet support.

What is ZIL’s maximum supply?

As of 2026-11-08, about 19.51 billion ZIL were circulating, with about 20.64 billion total supply. Its stated maximum supply is 21 billion.

How do I store ZIL?

Use a wallet that explicitly supports ZIL on the chain where your tokens are held. Keep your recovery phrase private and offline, and verify the network before sending.

Is Zilliqa moving to Ethereum?

Zilliqa has described a move from its independent Layer 1 toward an Ethereum Layer 2. Check current project instructions before transferring tokens or using a bridge, because support and routes can change.

What is the market cap of Zilliqa?

As of Nov 8, 2026, Zilliqa had a market cap of about $32.3M, ranking #601 among cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation. Market cap is price multiplied by circulating supply, so it moves with the price.

What is the all-time high of ZIL?

Zilliqa's all-time high is $0.2554, reached on May 6, 2021. Its all-time low is $0.001551 (Nov 5, 2026). Past prices say nothing about future returns.

What is the circulating supply of ZIL?

As of Nov 8, 2026, about 19.51B ZIL were in circulation, against a maximum supply of 21B.

Which blockchains is ZIL on?

ZIL is the native token of Zilliqa. It has token contracts on BNB Chain.
