What does holding STEEM let you do?

STEEM is the native cryptocurrency of the Steem blockchain, a network built for social and content-sharing services. Its best-known application is Steemit, where users can post and vote on content, and participation can be rewarded with cryptocurrency. The network also uses delegated proof of stake (DPoS), in which participants elect witnesses to help produce blocks.

For you as a holder, STEEM is tied to a social platform economy rather than just a general-purpose payment token. Content rewards are not guaranteed income: they depend on activity and community voting. Voting weight is influenced by how much currency a participant holds, so rewards and visibility can reflect token ownership as well as the response to a post. If you are considering STEEM, weigh the token’s role in this ecosystem against whether you want exposure to a blockchain whose use is closely linked to social content.

Which network and wallet should you use for STEEM?

STEEM runs on the Steem blockchain; it is not an asset issued on a separate network in the token facts. When choosing a wallet, check that it explicitly supports native STEEM and the Steem network. A wallet that supports another asset with a similar ticker may not be able to receive or manage STEEM correctly.

Before sending funds, confirm the receiving service accepts STEEM on Steem, and check the network shown on both sides of the transfer. Start with a small test transaction if you are unsure. If you hold STEEM on an exchange, the exchange controls the keys and its own withdrawal rules apply. In a self-custody wallet, you control the recovery credentials, so losing them can mean losing access. Keep recovery words offline, never share them, and beware of messages or sites asking you to enter them.

How much STEEM exists, and can its supply grow?

As of 2026-11-08, Steem’s circulating and total supply are both about 562.6 million STEEM. No maximum supply figure is published. Supply can change, so treat these as a dated snapshot rather than a fixed limit.

STEEM’s market price was about $0.0471 on that date, with a market capitalization of about $26.5 million. Its price can move sharply, and market capitalization is not money you can necessarily sell for. Content rewards and voting activity are also not a promise of future returns. If you are tracking the token’s value, distinguish the amount of STEEM you own from any estimated dollar value, and check a current market quote before making a transaction. Do not base a decision on an old price or on the assumption that platform activity will make the token appreciate.

What could go wrong when you hold STEEM?

STEEM carries both crypto-market risks and risks specific to a community-driven content network. Its dollar value can fall, and a quoted price does not guarantee that you can sell your holdings at that price. The dated market figures show a volatile asset, not a predictable source of income.

On Steem, community votes affect content ranking and rewards, while token holdings can increase voting influence. That can concentrate influence among larger holders and make rewards dependent on community behavior. The usefulness of STEEM also depends in part on people continuing to use Steemit and other Steem-based services. If you self-custody, lost keys or a mistaken transfer can make funds inaccessible; if you use an exchange, you rely on its security and withdrawal access. Only hold an amount you can afford to lose, and verify network details before transferring.

How can you store STEEM more safely?

Treat STEEM like any other self-custodied crypto asset: protect the keys that control it. Use a wallet that clearly supports STEEM on the Steem blockchain, keep its recovery phrase offline in a secure place, and do not store a readable copy in email or cloud storage. Never give your phrase or private keys to a person claiming to provide support.

For larger holdings, consider whether a hardware wallet that supports Steem is available and appropriate for you; confirm compatibility with the wallet maker before transferring. Keep software updated and test a new address or wallet setup with a small amount first. If you keep STEEM with a trading platform, enable account protections such as two-factor authentication where offered, and understand that you do not control the private keys. No storage method removes market, platform, or user-error risk.
