What can you use HIVE for?

HIVE is the native token of the Hive blockchain, a delegated proof-of-stake network used for social apps, publishing, games and other decentralised applications. You can transfer HIVE, hold it, or power it up into Hive Power (HP), which gives your account more influence in network governance and contributes to its available Resource Credits.

Hive is also used for rewards in some community and content applications. Those rewards depend on the app and its rules; holding HIVE alone does not guarantee an income. Hive transactions generally do not use a standard per-transaction fee, but they do use Resource Credits, which are linked to HP and replenish over time. If your account has too few credits, an action may have to wait.

Before you acquire HIVE for an app, check that the app uses the Hive blockchain and confirm how it handles rewards, withdrawals and account access. Token utility varies across the Hive ecosystem.

Which network and wallet should you use for HIVE?

HIVE runs on its own Layer 1 blockchain. It is not an ERC-20 token, and sending it to an Ethereum address or another network’s deposit address can result in permanent loss. Use a wallet or exchange that explicitly supports HIVE on Hive, and check the network shown on both the sending and receiving sides before you transfer.

Hive Keychain is a wallet option used to sign in to Hive apps and approve blockchain actions. Other Hive-compatible wallets may also support HIVE; check that the wallet supports the specific account and operation you need, such as transfers or powering up. A general-purpose wallet that supports other coins may not support Hive.

HIVE is distinct from the similarly named Hive Digital Technologies company. For exchange deposits, confirm the asset ticker and network rather than relying on the name alone. If you are moving a small amount for the first time, a test transfer can help you catch an address or network mismatch before sending more.

How much HIVE exists, and is there a supply cap?

Hive has no published maximum supply in the figures reported for the token. As of 2026-11-08, about 550.1 million HIVE was circulating, against a total supply of about 1.118 billion. Circulating and total supply are different measures; the total is not the number currently available to trade. Supply figures can change, so treat these as a dated snapshot rather than a fixed count.

You can power up HIVE into Hive Power, which affects your account’s influence and Resource Credits. That changes the token’s form and utility for your account, but it is not the same as burning HIVE or guaranteeing a return. Check the wallet carefully before powering up, since reversing that choice may take time.

Supply figures do not tell you what HIVE is worth or how easy it will be to sell. Trading activity and market prices move, and exchange availability can vary. If you need to cash out, check the current trading pair, withdrawal network and withdrawal terms before relying on a quoted price.

How can you store HIVE more safely?

Treat your Hive account credentials like the keys to the assets and apps connected to that account. Use a wallet that supports Hive, protect its password or signing keys, and keep a secure offline backup where other people cannot access it. Never share a private key or recovery phrase with someone claiming to offer support. A real wallet action should not require you to disclose those secrets to another person.

Hive accounts can use different keys for different actions. Follow the wallet’s guidance on which key is needed, and avoid using a more powerful key than the action requires. Store backups separately from your phone or computer so a lost or damaged device does not also destroy your only copy.

Before approving a transaction, check the recipient, amount and action shown by your wallet. Be cautious with unfamiliar Hive apps that ask you to sign broad permissions or give up account access. A mistaken transfer, compromised key or malicious approval may be difficult or impossible to reverse.

What could go wrong when you hold HIVE?

HIVE is exposed to crypto-market volatility. Its price can fall sharply, and a token’s past price does not indicate what it will be worth later. HIVE’s market activity may also be lower than that of larger assets, which can make it harder to trade at the price you expect, especially for larger orders.

There are network and account risks too. Sending HIVE to the wrong network or address can make it unrecoverable. Losing account credentials can block access, while a compromised key can let someone else move assets or act through your account. Hive apps and third-party services add their own risks; the blockchain does not guarantee an app’s safety, rewards or continued operation.

If you use HIVE for voting, powering up or app access, understand what you may give up in flexibility before committing tokens. Check current wallet and exchange support, and avoid holding more on a service than you can afford to lose. No token utility or governance role removes the possibility of loss.

HIVE FAQs

What blockchain is HIVE on?

HIVE runs on the Hive blockchain, its own Layer 1 network. It is not an Ethereum token, so use a wallet or exchange that specifically supports HIVE on Hive.

Does HIVE have a maximum supply?

No maximum supply is listed for HIVE. As of 2026-11-08, about 550.1 million HIVE was circulating and total supply was about 1.118 billion; these figures can change.

Which wallet can hold HIVE?

Hive Keychain is one wallet option used with Hive apps. Confirm that any wallet you choose supports the Hive blockchain and the actions you need, and keep your signing keys and backups private.

Does it cost a fee to send HIVE?

Hive transactions generally use Resource Credits rather than a standard per-transaction fee. Resource Credits are linked to Hive Power and replenish over time, so an account with too few credits may need to wait before acting.

What happens when you power up HIVE?
