What does holding NEO actually give you?
NEO is the governance token of the Neo smart-contract blockchain. Holding it is different from holding the token used to pay ordinary network fees: Neo uses GAS for transactions and other on-chain operations.
NEO can also give you a role in network governance, including voting. NEO holders may receive GAS under the network’s rules, but the amount and timing can depend on how the network operates and how you hold or use your tokens. Check the current Neo wallet and governance rules before relying on GAS generation as income.
The project’s broader aim is to support smart contracts and digital assets on a public blockchain. That does not mean a token representing a real-world asset automatically gives you legal ownership or protection. Check the terms and legal rights attached to any asset issued on Neo separately.
Which chain and wallet can hold NEO?
NEO is native to the Neo blockchain. The token facts do not identify NEO as issued on other chains, so do not assume a token with the same name on another network is native NEO. Wrapped or bridged versions, if you encounter them, can carry extra issuer, bridge and redemption risks.
Wallet support varies. Choose a wallet that explicitly supports the Neo network and the NEO asset you hold; support for GAS or other Neo tokens may differ. Before sending funds, confirm the network and receiving address with the recipient or exchange, and check whether the wallet supports the relevant Neo version.
You can generally hold tokens in a self-custody wallet or through a service that supports NEO. With self-custody, you control the recovery phrase and are responsible for keeping it safe. With a custodial service, the provider controls the keys and its withdrawal rules apply. A small test transfer can help catch a network or address mismatch before you move a larger amount.
How many NEO exist, and what can change its value?
NEO has a total supply of 100 million tokens. About 70.53 million were circulating as of November 8, 2026; the remaining supply is not part of that circulating figure. The circulating amount can change as tokens are released or otherwise become available. These are dated figures, not a live balance.
NEO’s role is tied to governance, while GAS is used for network fees. NEO holders can be eligible to receive GAS under network rules, so the relationship between the tokens may matter when you compare a wallet or custody service. Do not assume every exchange credits GAS in the same way as a self-custody wallet.
Market values move independently of the token’s supply and uses. As of November 8, 2026, NEO’s reported price was about $1.85 and its market capitalization about $130.6 million. Those figures can change quickly and do not indicate what the token will be worth later.
How can you get and store NEO safely?
You can obtain NEO through a service that supports the token or receive it from another holder. Availability, identity checks, deposit methods and withdrawal limits depend on the service and your location. This is general information, not a recommendation to purchase.
For self-custody, use a wallet that specifically supports NEO on Neo, then store its recovery phrase offline and never share it. Confirm that the receiving wallet or service accepts deposits on the same network. If you leave NEO with a custodian, check its withdrawal terms and whether it supports GAS distribution or governance actions; these features may differ between providers.
Before moving a meaningful amount, verify the destination address and network. Be wary of unsolicited messages, fake wallet downloads and anyone asking for your recovery phrase. A legitimate support agent should not need your secret phrase to help with an account or transfer.
What does it cost to move NEO?
A NEO transfer uses the Neo network, where GAS is the token used for network fees. Keep in mind that holding NEO does not necessarily mean you have GAS available to cover every transaction. Check your wallet’s fee estimate and GAS balance before sending or interacting with a smart contract. Neo fees can vary by transaction and network conditions; no fixed fee amount is stated here.
If you use an exchange, its withdrawal fee and minimum can be separate from the blockchain fee. If you move a wrapped token through a bridge, you may also face fees on the sending and receiving networks, plus bridge-specific conditions. The token facts do not identify an official cross-chain NEO version, so verify the exact asset and redemption path before using one.
A transaction sent on an unsupported network may be difficult or impossible to recover. Check the network label, destination address and final fee before confirming.
What risks and history should NEO holders know?
NEO’s risks include token-price volatility, changing demand for the Neo network, wallet or exchange failures, and mistakes that cannot be reversed after an on-chain transfer. GAS generation is not a guaranteed return, and governance participation does not remove the risk that network decisions or adoption may change.
Be cautious of claims that NEO guarantees legal ownership of real estate, shares or other off-chain assets. A blockchain record by itself does not establish that an issuer has the legal authority to transfer an asset or that you can enforce a claim. Check the issuer’s documents and the law where you live.
NEO launched in 2016 as Antshares and was later renamed Neo. Its stated focus has been a “smart economy” combining digital assets, digital identity and smart contracts. The project’s history and stated goals are not proof of future adoption. As with any cryptoasset, use only a wallet and service you can verify, and do not share your recovery phrase.
By the numbers
NEO in numbers
NEO (NEO) is ranked #220 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $131M and a price of $1.85 as of Nov 8, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation is $185M, so roughly 71% of the eventual supply is in circulation today; tokens still to be released could add selling pressure.
The price was down 6.6% over 7 days, down 21.9% over 30 days, down 67.8% over the past year. It trades about 99% below its all-time high of $198.38, set on Jan 14, 2018.
About 70.53M NEO are in circulation, from a total supply of 100M. No hard maximum supply is listed.
24-hour trading volume was about $2.05M, or 1.6% of its market cap: low turnover, so large orders can move the price.
NEO is the native token of Neo. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.

NEO FAQs
What is NEO used for?
NEO is used for governance on the Neo blockchain. GAS is the token used to pay network fees, so do not assume NEO alone will cover a transaction.
Which blockchain is NEO on?
NEO is native to the Neo blockchain. Use a wallet that explicitly supports NEO on that network, and check that the recipient accepts the same network before sending.
What is the maximum supply of NEO?
NEO has a total supply of 100 million tokens. About 70.53 million were circulating as of November 8, 2026; circulating supply can change over time.
Do you need GAS to send NEO?
GAS is used for Neo network fees. A transaction’s cost can vary, and exchange withdrawal fees may be separate, so check the wallet or service estimate before confirming.
Do NEO holders earn GAS?
NEO holders may receive GAS under Neo’s network rules, but the amount and timing can depend on network conditions and how you hold the tokens. Check the current rules and your wallet or service’s support before relying on it.
What is the market cap of NEO?
As of Nov 8, 2026, NEO had a market cap of about $131M, ranking #220 among cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation. Market cap is price multiplied by circulating supply, so it moves with the price.
What is the all-time high of NEO?
NEO's all-time high is $198.38, reached on Jan 14, 2018. Its all-time low is $0.0783 (Oct 20, 2016). Past prices say nothing about future returns.
What is the circulating supply of NEO?
As of Nov 8, 2026, about 70.53M NEO were in circulation; no fixed maximum supply is listed.
Which blockchains is NEO on?
NEO is the native token of Neo.
