What does holding GTC let you do?
Gitcoin (GTC) is a governance token associated with Gitcoin, a platform that funds builders working on open-source projects. Holding GTC may let you take part in community decisions about the platform and its grants work, depending on the governance process and proposals in place. It is not the same thing as donating to a grant: owning the token does not automatically fund a project or guarantee a role in decision-making.
Before treating GTC as a governance tool, check whether there are current proposals, how voting works, and whether participation requires a particular wallet or voting setup. Governance tokens can have little practical influence when participation is low or decisions are made through other processes. GTC’s purpose is tied to Gitcoin’s community governance; it does not represent a claim on company profits or a guaranteed return.
Which networks can you use for GTC?
GTC is issued on Ethereum and Near; it is not listed as the native token of either chain. Ethereum GTC is an ERC-20 token. The same token name on another network may be a separately bridged or represented asset, so check the network and token details before sending or receiving it.
Use a wallet that supports the network and the specific GTC asset you intend to hold. Before transferring, confirm that the receiving wallet or exchange accepts deposits on that exact network. A transfer sent to an unsupported chain or address may be difficult or impossible to recover. Ethereum transactions require ETH for network fees; transactions on Near use that network’s fee system. Fees vary with network conditions and are separate from the amount of GTC you send. If you are moving a large balance, a small test transfer can help you catch an address or network mismatch first.
How many GTC tokens exist?
GTC has a maximum and total supply of 100 million tokens. About 87.5 million were circulating as of November 8, 2026, leaving a difference between the reported circulating amount and the total supply. That difference does not, by itself, tell you when or how remaining tokens may enter circulation.
Supply figures can change as tokens are distributed, unlocked, or otherwise become available. Check current token information before making a decision based on circulating supply or dilution. GTC’s price and market activity can also change sharply: a quoted value at one point is not a reliable guide to what you could receive later. A fixed maximum supply does not guarantee demand, liquidity, or price stability, and it does not make the token a low-risk holding.
How should you store GTC safely?
You can hold GTC in a self-custody wallet that supports its network, or with a crypto exchange that supports GTC deposits and withdrawals. With self-custody, you control the recovery phrase and private keys; losing them can mean losing access permanently. Store the recovery phrase offline in a secure place, and never share it with someone claiming they need it to validate, restore, or upgrade your wallet.
Check the network shown in your wallet before receiving GTC. If you use an exchange, confirm the supported withdrawal network and any withdrawal requirements before sending funds. Keep a record of which network your balance is on, especially if you hold GTC on both Ethereum and Near. Be wary of unsolicited messages, fake support accounts, and websites asking you to connect your wallet or sign an unclear transaction. A signature can authorize actions beyond a simple transfer.
What can go wrong when you hold GTC?
GTC carries the risks of a volatile governance token. Its value can fall, trading may be thin on some venues, and a market price does not guarantee you can sell your full balance at that price. Governance influence can also be limited: proposals may not pass, participation may be low, or the platform’s priorities may change.
There are also operational risks. Sending tokens on the wrong network, approving a malicious contract, or losing your wallet recovery phrase can result in a permanent loss. Cross-chain versions add the need to verify that a bridge or exchange supports the exact asset you hold. Before using GTC to vote or moving it, check the proposal details, transaction permissions, network, and recipient address. Only commit funds you can afford to lose, and do not rely on past prices or a token’s fixed supply as protection against losses.
By the numbers

Gitcoin (GTC) is ranked #999 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $14.5M and a price of $0.1659 as of Nov 8, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation is $16.6M, so roughly 87% of the eventual supply is in circulation today; tokens still to be released could add selling pressure.
The price was down 26.8% over 7 days, down 19.8% over 30 days, down 14.6% over the past year. It trades about 99% below its all-time high of $22.37, set on Nov 26, 2021.
About 87.49M GTC are in circulation out of a maximum supply of 100M (87% issued).
24-hour trading volume was about $10.8M, or 75% of its market cap: very high turnover.
GTC has token contracts on 2 chains we track, including Ethereum, Near. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.

GTC FAQs
What is GTC used for?
GTC is associated with Gitcoin governance. Holding it may let you participate in community decisions, subject to the current voting process. It does not guarantee that your vote will change an outcome.
Is GTC an Ethereum token?
GTC is issued on Ethereum and Near. Confirm the network and asset details with the receiving wallet or exchange before transferring, because support for one network does not mean support for the other.
What is the total supply of GTC?
GTC has a maximum and total supply of 100 million. About 87.5 million were circulating as of November 8, 2026; supply figures can change over time.
Where can I store GTC?

Is GTC a risky token to hold?
Yes. GTC’s price can fluctuate, and you may face limited liquidity, governance uncertainty, wrong-network transfers, or wallet-security risks. A fixed maximum supply does not prevent losses.
