What can you use GUSD for?
Gemini Dollar (GUSD) is a stablecoin designed to track the U.S. dollar at a 1:1 rate. Gemini Trust Company, LLC, a New York trust company, issues it. You might use GUSD to transfer dollar-denominated value on supported blockchains or hold it between crypto trades, but its price can still move away from $1 on exchanges.
Gemini says you can obtain GUSD 1:1 for U.S. dollars through a Gemini account. That is different from selling it to another person or exchange: those trades depend on the market price and available liquidity. Before relying on GUSD for a payment or transfer, check that the recipient supports the token on the network you plan to use. GUSD is not a bank account, and its dollar target does not remove issuer, custody or blockchain risks.
Which network should you choose for GUSD?
GUSD is issued on Ethereum and Near. On Ethereum, it follows the ERC-20 token standard, so you need an Ethereum-compatible wallet or service that specifically supports GUSD. The token’s availability on Near does not mean an Ethereum GUSD balance can be sent directly to a Near address; use only the network and transfer route supported by both your wallet or exchange and the recipient.
Before sending, check the network shown on the withdrawal screen, confirm the receiving address belongs to that network, and make a small test transfer if the amount warrants it. Sending tokens over an unsupported network can make them difficult or impossible to recover. A wallet may support a network without displaying GUSD automatically, so check its token support and contract details through a trusted source before adding a token manually. Fees depend on the network and service you use; Gemini’s fees are not specified here.
How is GUSD backed, and how much is in circulation?
As of 2026-11-08, about 34.6 million GUSD were in circulation, with a reported market value of about $34.6 million. The circulating and total supplies were both about 34.6 million tokens. A maximum supply is not listed, so do not assume the supply is fixed: an issuer can create or remove tokens as issuance and redemption change.
Gemini describes GUSD as backed 1:1 by U.S. dollars held at a U.S. bank. It says the corresponding deposit balance is examined monthly by an independent registered public accounting firm to check the peg. Gemini also says eligible deposits may qualify for FDIC pass-through insurance, subject to applicable limits. That is not a blanket guarantee that every GUSD holder or token balance is insured. If you plan to redeem, check Gemini’s current account, eligibility and redemption terms; a market sale may not return exactly $1 per token.
How should you store GUSD?
You can keep GUSD in a wallet that supports the token on its specific network, or leave it with a custodial exchange that supports GUSD deposits and withdrawals. With a self-custody wallet, protect your recovery phrase offline and never share it; anyone who gets the phrase may be able to control your funds. For larger balances, consider how you will secure backups and confirm you can restore the wallet before relying on it.
Check the network and token carefully before depositing or withdrawing. A wallet address that looks familiar may not mean the service supports GUSD on that chain. If you use an exchange, you rely on its account security, withdrawal rules and ability to process transactions. Gemini says the GUSD smart-contract code has been audited by Trail of Bits. An audit can help identify code issues, but it cannot remove every technical, operational or custody risk.
What could go wrong while you hold GUSD?
GUSD’s main risks are that its market price can fall below or rise above $1, that redemption may depend on Gemini’s terms and operations, and that a blockchain or smart-contract problem could disrupt transfers. The reserve arrangement also depends on the issuer and its banking relationships. FDIC pass-through coverage is subject to limitations and should not be treated as guaranteed insurance for your token holdings.
A stablecoin can also lose usefulness if trading liquidity declines or a platform stops supporting it. Before using GUSD, check the current market price, available trading or redemption routes, and the network supported by the service you intend to use. Do not treat a dollar peg as a promise that you can always sell immediately for exactly one dollar. Keep only the amount you are prepared to hold through service interruptions or a loss of confidence in the issuer or token.
