Hyperliquid Review: Is Onchain Trading Worth It?

Hyperliquid is an onchain trading platform and Layer 1 for spot and perpetual markets. It offers broad market access and non-custodial trading, but you should check current costs and understand margin risk before connecting a wallet.

SkyBitcoins rating

Quick take

Hyperliquid suits experienced traders who want onchain spot and perpetual markets, including crypto and markets tied to commodities, indices and FX. Its main draw is trading on a dedicated Layer 1 with non-custodial execution. Before depositing, check the current fees and market terms, and make sure you understand funding payments, leverage and liquidation risk. A fast chain does not make risky trades safer.

Is it for you?

Who Hyperliquid suits

Good for

  • Experienced traders seeking onchain spot and perpetual markets
  • Traders who want crypto alongside commodity, index or FX markets
  • Developers building apps that use Hyperliquid's liquidity or HyperEVM

Not for

  • Beginners who do not understand leverage, margin or liquidation risk
  • People who need guaranteed prices or protection from trading losses
  • Users who want a conventional broker, fiat account or centralized exchange support

What can you trade on Hyperliquid?

Hyperliquid combines a Layer 1 blockchain with an onchain exchange. You can trade spot assets and perpetual futures, with markets covering crypto as well as commodities, indices and foreign exchange. Perpetuals let you take long or short positions without owning the underlying asset, and trading on margin can magnify both gains and losses. A market label such as gold or an index should not be taken to mean you are buying that real-world asset.

The network is split between HyperCore, which handles trading, and HyperEVM, which supports smart-contract apps. Hyperliquid also describes its ecosystem as supporting lending, borrowing and other applications. Builders can connect to its liquidity through builder codes and provide their own user-facing apps. If your goal is simply to hold crypto, this trading-focused platform may be more complex than you need; its strongest fit is active users who understand order books and derivatives.

What will a Hyperliquid trade cost you?

Your trading costs can include maker or taker fees, the spread between buy and sell prices, and slippage when an order executes at a different price than expected. Perpetual positions can also incur funding payments, which move between traders according to the market's funding rate. If you use leverage, liquidation can close a position and lock in a loss. Moving assets onto or off the network may involve separate transfer or bridge costs.

The exact rates and conditions can vary by market and trading tier, so check Hyperliquid's current fee schedule and the terms shown for the specific market before placing an order. Don't estimate a trade's cost from the headline fee alone: compare the order-book price, funding rate and expected size of your trade. No fee figures are included here, so the value of Hyperliquid depends on the markets you use and the costs you actually face.

How much trust should you place in Hyperliquid?

Hyperliquid says it is non-custodial: it does not take custody of users' funds as a centralized exchange would. Its network uses HyperBFT, a delegated proof-of-stake consensus mechanism. HYPE holders can delegate to validators; Hyperliquid describes an active set of 27 validators, a two-thirds stake quorum to commit blocks and a seven-day unstaking queue. It also says orders, cancellations, trades and liquidations happen onchain, with one-block finality.

Those features explain the network's design, not a guarantee that funds or trades are safe. A connected wallet, smart contracts, network software and market volatility all create risks, while a compromised wallet can expose assets without the platform holding them. Hyperliquid does not publish an independent audit or financial-services licence in its published security information. Consider keeping only trading funds in the connected wallet and verify transaction details before signing.

What is it like to use Hyperliquid?

Using Hyperliquid means interacting with its own L1 rather than trading directly on Ethereum or another general-purpose chain. The platform says its network has a 0.07-second block time and provides one-block finality. These are network claims, not a promise that every wallet interaction, deposit or withdrawal will complete at that speed. You will need a compatible wallet and assets on the right network; confirm the supported wallet and transfer route in Hyperliquid's current app instructions before moving funds.

The product is presented as an online trading app, but the details here do not establish which wallets, mobile features or regional access rules are supported. Test the interface with a small amount first, and make sure you can identify the correct market, order type and margin settings. If you use an outside app that integrates Hyperliquid, check its fees and permissions separately; builder apps can set their own user experience and may charge fees per order.

Where does Hyperliquid fall short?

Hyperliquid is not a low-risk way to earn yield or a simple substitute for a brokerage account. Perpetuals and leveraged trading can liquidate your position, while spot holdings still carry token-price and wallet risks. Markets based on commodities, indices or FX also do not necessarily give you ownership or the same rights as buying those assets through a traditional provider.

There are practical unknowns to resolve before you trade: check the latest fee schedule, which assets and wallets are currently supported, and the exact deposit and withdrawal process for your location. Hyperliquid's security description does not establish regulatory protections, compensation for losses or independent audit coverage. If you want customer-service recourse, familiar fiat rails or straightforward long-term investing, a regulated broker or centralized exchange may fit better. Start only with funds you can afford to lose, and avoid signing wallet transactions you do not understand.

  1. 1

  4. 4

Review the order type, leverage, funding rate and liquidation conditions before opening a position.

  5. 5

Hyperliquid FAQs

What is Hyperliquid?

Hyperliquid is a Layer 1 blockchain with an onchain trading platform. It is best known for spot markets and perpetual futures, and its wider ecosystem includes lending and apps built on HyperEVM.

Is Hyperliquid non-custodial?

Hyperliquid describes itself as non-custodial, so the platform does not take custody of your funds in the way a centralized exchange does. You still face wallet, network, smart-contract and trading risks.

What can you trade on Hyperliquid?

The platform offers spot and perpetual trading, including markets related to crypto, commodities, indices and foreign exchange. A listed market does not necessarily mean you own the underlying asset.

What fees does Hyperliquid charge?

Trading can involve exchange fees and, for perpetuals, funding payments between traders. Your total cost can also be affected by spread, slippage and any costs involved in moving funds; check the current fee schedule and market terms before trading.

What is the HYPE token used for?

HYPE is Hyperliquid's native token. Token holders can delegate HYPE to validators, and the network uses delegated proof of stake.
