Volmex Review: Are Its Indices and API Worth Using?

Volmex publishes crypto volatility benchmarks and data feeds, with linked derivatives traded on outside venues. Its free API is accessible, but trading costs, venue rules and the risks of leveraged contracts need checking before you act.

SkyBitcoins rating

Quick take

Volmex suits data users and experienced derivatives traders who want crypto volatility benchmarks such as BVIV and EVIV. The main reason to try it is that some index data is free, while paid feeds offer real-time and more detailed access. Before trading, check the chosen venue’s fees, withdrawal rules and contract terms: Volmex-linked products are offered elsewhere, and leverage can magnify losses.

What can you do with Volmex indices?

Volmex is best understood as an index publisher and data service, not as a general-purpose crypto exchange. Its headline measures include BVIV, a 30-day implied-volatility benchmark for Bitcoin, and EVIV for Ethereum. It also publishes measures for US-listed Bitcoin ETF volatility, realized volatility, spot-volatility correlation and crypto funding or lending rates.

You can use its API and charts to track these indicators; the public tier includes selected indices and 60-minute and daily resolutions. Paid subscriptions add real-time access, shorter intraday intervals and, on higher plans, a broader index family and WebSocket access. Developers can integrate the data into their own tools.

If you want to trade rather than observe the indices, Volmex links to outside venues offering perpetual futures and prediction markets tied to its index values. That distinction matters: the index is a benchmark, while the product you trade has its own contract terms and venue risks. Volmex is not presenting one unified account where you hold funds and trade every listed product.

What will Volmex data and trading cost?

The public API plan is free and includes a free key, selected index data, 60-minute and daily resolutions, and methodology papers. The BVIV package costs $199 per month and lists a 14-day trial, real-time BVIV and BVIV-US data, multiple terms, intraday resolutions and WebSocket access. The Pro plan costs $1,320 per month and adds more indices and higher rate limits. Both paid prices are billed monthly; enterprise licensing is custom-priced.

Those are data-subscription prices, not the cost of trading. Volmex does not publish trading fees for the outside venues in its listed product information. You may also face venue charges, funding payments, spreads and, for onchain trades, network costs. Those depend on the venue and the specific contract, so check them before placing an order.

The free tier can be enough if you only need slower updates for research. If you need real-time data, confirm which plan covers the specific indices and resolution you need before starting a paid subscription or trial.

How much should you trust Volmex with money?

Volmex lists two audits, but the audit names, dates, scope and findings are not specified. That makes it difficult to judge what was reviewed or whether the audits apply to the data service, smart contracts, or a particular trading product. Volmex also does not publish licensing details or a clear account of how user funds are held, which is relevant because trading takes place on outside venues.

The platform’s own index feed is distinct from custody of funds: if you trade a linked perpetual or prediction market, you interact with that venue and must assess its security, custody arrangements and withdrawal process separately. Do not treat an index being widely referenced or used for settlement as a guarantee that a venue, contract or trade is safe.

Before committing money, identify the exact contract and venue, read its terms, and verify the venue’s current security and withdrawal information. If you cannot establish who controls the funds or what protections apply, avoid depositing more than you can afford to lose.

How do you start with Volmex safely?

For data access, start by deciding whether the free plan’s selected indices and slower resolutions meet your needs. If you need paid features, check the plan’s coverage and trial terms, then request an API key and test the feed in a non-critical workflow before relying on it.

For trading, Volmex lists products on venues including Hyperliquid, Bitfinex and other onchain platforms. The stated leverage varies: some listings show up to 5× or 20×, while one onchain listing shows up to 100×. These are venue-specific maximums, not a recommendation. High leverage can cause rapid liquidation and losses, including from volatility changes that do not match your view of the underlying coin’s price.

Check the contract’s settlement index, funding rules, fees, liquidity, leverage controls and withdrawal process on the venue itself. Availability and access requirements can differ by location and account. Start with no funds until you understand how the product settles and how you would exit a position.

Where does Volmex fall short?

Volmex’s main limitation is that it combines a data business with a directory of products traded elsewhere, which can make the boundary between the benchmark and the trade easy to miss. A subscription buys data access; it does not necessarily provide access to a venue or cover trading costs. Conversely, using a listed venue does not mean you need a paid Volmex API plan.

The public plan offers only selected data and slower resolutions, while real-time access and broader coverage require paid plans. Fees for trading, detailed venue terms and the scope of Volmex’s listed audits are not published in the product details, so you have to assess those separately. The project is also a poor fit if you want a simple buy-and-hold crypto app or a single provider responsible for both your data and funds.

Volatility products can be difficult to value and may behave differently from spot crypto. If you are new to derivatives, learn how the index and contract settle before using money, and avoid leverage you do not fully understand.

5 steps

How to start with Volmex

  1. 1

Decide whether you need index data or want to trade a linked contract; these are separate services.

  2. 2

Read the methodology for the specific index and confirm its underlying market and settlement terms.

  3. 3

For data, compare the free, BVIV and Pro plans against the indices, speed and API features you actually need.

  4. 4

For trading, check the chosen venue’s fees, leverage, funding, access rules, custody and withdrawal terms before depositing.

  5. 5

If you trade, begin without leverage or with a position size you can afford to lose.

Volmex FAQs

What is Volmex?

Volmex publishes indices such as BVIV for Bitcoin implied volatility and EVIV for Ethereum implied volatility, alongside realized-volatility and rate indicators. You can access some data for free through its API; linked derivatives trade on separate venues.

How much does Volmex cost?

Volmex lists a free API plan, a BVIV package at $199 per month and a Pro plan at $1,320 per month, both billed monthly. Enterprise pricing is custom. Trading fees on the outside venues are separate and are not published by Volmex.

Where can you trade BVIV or EVIV?

You can trade Volmex-linked products on venues including Hyperliquid, Bitfinex and other onchain platforms. These are third-party venues, so availability, fees, access requirements and contract terms depend on the venue.

Is Volmex safe to use?

Volmex lists two audits, but their names, scope and findings are not specified here. Licensing, a detailed custody model and a full account of security controls are also not published, so check the relevant venue's protections before depositing funds.

Can you use leverage with Volmex indices?

BVIV and EVIV-linked perpetuals are offered with leverage on some venues; the stated maximum varies by venue, reaching as high as 100× on one listed option. Leverage can magnify losses as well as gains, and a volatility index is not the same as a straightforward bet on whether crypto prices will rise or fall.
