Owning ZARU: Uses, Storage and Risks

ZAR Universal (ZARU) is a stablecoin intended to track the South African rand at 1 ZAR per token. It is designed for digital settlement, including payments and cross-border commerce, rather than as a token with a separate network or mining function. Whether you can use it for a particular payment depends on whether the recipient or service accepts ZARU on the same network you use.

ZARU is issued by BlockTower South Africa (Pty) Ltd, a Financial Services Provider licensed by the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA). The issuer describes the token as backed by rand-denominated reserves held in segregated accounts. That design aims to keep the token near its rand peg, but it does not make the market price or your ability to redeem it certain.

As of 2026-11-08, ZARU traded at about US$0.060. A US-dollar quote can move with the rand’s exchange rate as well as with trading conditions, so it is not a direct measure of whether ZARU is worth exactly one rand. Check the ZAR value and the network before relying on a quoted price or sending tokens.

ZARU is issued on Solana, Ethereum, Base and Arc. It is not the native token of any of these networks; it is a token deployed on them. A wallet must support both the relevant network and the correct ZARU token contract or address. Seeing a token with the same name or ticker is not enough to confirm it is genuine.

Before you receive or send ZARU, check which network the other party expects and confirm the token address through an official project channel. A transfer sent on the wrong network may not arrive in a form the recipient can use, and blockchain transfers are generally difficult to reverse. You will also need the network’s own token to pay transaction fees; ZARU may not cover those fees.

Do not assume that a wallet or exchange supporting ZARU on one chain supports it on all four. Availability, deposit and withdrawal networks, and any conversion process can differ by provider. If you are moving tokens between networks, use only a route the issuer or service explicitly supports and check the costs and risks first.

There were about 60.9 million ZARU in circulation as of 2026-11-08, and the reported total supply was also about 60.9 million. No maximum supply is published. The market capitalisation was about US$3.6 million on that date, but market capitalisation is a changing estimate based on price and supply, not cash available for holders to withdraw.

For a rand-pegged stablecoin, the important supply question is whether the reserves and the redemption process can support tokens in circulation. ZARU’s issuer says every circulating token is backed by rand-denominated reserves in segregated accounts at Standard Bank of South Africa. Sanlam Specialised Asset Manager oversees reserve management as asset-liability manager, and Moore Johannesburg Inc. conducts monthly independent reserve attestations.

An attestation is a periodic check, not a guarantee that you can redeem at any time or that the market price will never move from the peg. Read the latest attestation and check whether its date and scope match what you need to know. Supply can also change as tokens are issued or removed, so treat the figure above as a dated snapshot.

Keep ZARU in a wallet that supports its specific network, and protect the wallet’s recovery phrase or private keys offline. Never share them with someone claiming to help you claim, verify or unlock tokens. For a transfer, first confirm the recipient address, network and token contract; a small test transfer can help catch a mistake when the fees make it practical.

The main risks are different from those of an ordinary rand bank balance. The peg could weaken if confidence, liquidity, reserve access or redemption arrangements are disrupted. The issuer and its operations also matter: licensing and reserve attestations provide useful information, but do not remove issuer, banking, custody or legal risks. Smart-contract bugs, compromised keys, network outages and mistaken transfers can cause losses too.

ZARU’s published design describes reserve backing and monthly attestations, but redemption eligibility, timing and fees are not specified in the project facts here. Confirm those terms with the issuer or service you plan to use before treating ZARU as cash you can readily withdraw. Avoid holding more than you can afford to lose, and do not rely on a stablecoin peg as a guarantee of value.
