What can you use NIL for?

NIL is the utility token for Nillion, a network built around privacy-preserving data use and “Covenants.” A Covenant lets someone seal an instruction onchain until a stated condition is met; the instruction is intended to stay unreadable until independent nodes reach the threshold needed to reveal and execute it.

NIL is used to pay protocol fees for creating and resolving Covenants, to stake when operating a node, and to reward nodes that monitor conditions and settle results. The token also enables access to Nillion privacy infrastructure, including nilDB, which splits encrypted data across nodes while allowing calculations on it, and nilAI tools for privacy-focused AI.

Those uses do not mean every NIL holder earns rewards or gets a return. Staking involves operating a node, and the token’s value can change independently of network use. Nillion does not publish fixed Covenant fee amounts, so check the current terms before committing funds or setting up a node.

Which chain and wallet should you use for NIL?

NIL is listed as issued on Ethereum; no native chain is identified. Before receiving or sending it, check that your exchange or wallet supports NIL on Ethereum and confirm the token contract address through Nillion’s official channels. A token with the same symbol on another network may be unrelated.

You can use a self-custody wallet that supports Ethereum assets, or leave NIL with a custodial exchange that lists it. With self-custody, you control the keys and must protect your recovery phrase; an exchange controls the keys if you keep tokens there. Ethereum transfers generally require ETH for network gas, which is separate from Nillion protocol fees.

If you send NIL to an address or network that does not support it, recovery may be difficult or impossible. For a first transfer, verify the network and address carefully, and consider sending a small test amount when practical. Do not share your recovery phrase with anyone claiming to help you connect a wallet.

How much NIL is circulating, and is there a cap?

As of 2026-11-08, about 558.2 million NIL were circulating, out of roughly 1.01 billion total tokens. No maximum supply is listed, so the total supply figure should not be treated as a hard cap. Circulating supply can also change as tokens enter or leave circulation.

The gap between total and circulating supply matters if you are assessing potential dilution: tokens not yet circulating could affect the amount available in the market later. Check Nillion’s token distribution and unlock information before relying on a supply estimate; circulating supply alone does not tell you when or how remaining tokens may be released.

Supply figures are not a forecast of value. NIL’s market price and market capitalization move over time, and a project’s use of its token does not guarantee demand for it. Avoid making a decision from a single snapshot.

How can you store NIL more safely?

For self-custody, keep NIL in a wallet that supports Ethereum and that you can access with your own securely stored keys. Write the recovery phrase offline and store it somewhere private and protected from loss, fire, and unauthorized access. Never enter it into a website or send it to someone who contacts you unexpectedly.

Use a hardware wallet if that fits your security needs, and check the transaction details on the device before approving. For any wallet, be cautious with token approvals and unfamiliar applications: a malicious approval or signed transaction can put assets at risk even if you never reveal your recovery phrase. Keep your device and wallet software updated through trusted channels.

If you use an exchange, enable available account protections and understand its custody and withdrawal policies. Custodial storage avoids managing a recovery phrase but leaves access dependent on the provider. Neither approach removes price, network, or provider risks.

What risks should you check before holding or staking NIL?

NIL carries ordinary crypto risks as well as risks tied to a complex privacy network. Its price can fall sharply, and a decline in network activity or demand could reduce the usefulness of its token functions. The token has no listed maximum supply, and future circulation may affect holders.

Covenants depend on conditions being monitored and settled by a threshold of independent nodes. Errors, unavailable nodes, faulty data feeds, software flaws, or coordination problems could interfere with execution. Privacy claims are not a substitute for checking how the system works, what data is exposed, and what independent security reviews cover.

Nillion does not publish fixed fee amounts. Before using a service or staking, check current fees, lockup and withdrawal terms, node requirements, and security documentation. Staking can expose you to operational or protocol risks, and you should not stake funds you cannot afford to lose.

By the numbers

Nillion in numbers

Nillion (NIL) is ranked #588 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $33.4M and a price of $0.0598 as of Nov 8, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation is $60.4M, so roughly 55% of the eventual supply is in circulation today; tokens still to be released could add selling pressure.

The price was down 19.7% over 7 days, down 30.2% over 30 days, down 69.7% over the past year. It trades about 93% below its all-time high of $0.8971, set on Mar 24, 2025.

About 558.24M NIL are in circulation, from a total supply of 1.01B. No hard maximum supply is listed.

24-hour trading volume was about $9.57M, or 29% of its market cap: very high turnover.

NIL has token contracts on Ethereum. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.
