What can you use XEM for?

XEM is the native cryptocurrency of NEM, a blockchain platform launched in 2015. You can use it to transfer value and, on the NEM network, pay transaction fees. NEM also supports user-created assets called mosaics, namespaces and multisignature accounts; holding XEM does not automatically give you ownership of those assets or control of an account.

NEM uses Proof of Importance (PoI), a consensus system designed to take on-chain activity into account rather than relying only on how much a participant holds. NEM has also described a harvesting process for helping to process transactions. Don’t assume XEM earns a fixed yield: rewards, eligibility and current network conditions need to be checked before you rely on them.

NEM’s earlier development direction included work involving Symbol, a separate blockchain platform. Treat XEM and Symbol’s XYM as different assets. XEM’s practical use depends on the NEM network, services and people who currently support it.

Which network and wallet should you use for XEM?

XEM belongs to NEM’s own network. It is not an Ethereum or Bitcoin token by default, and a wallet that supports another asset with the ticker XEM may not support NEM’s version. When you withdraw or receive XEM, check that both the wallet and the sending service explicitly support the NEM network. Confirm the address format and any destination-tag or message requirements before sending; don’t assume they match another chain’s rules.

Choose a wallet that specifically supports NEM mainnet and lets you control the recovery phrase or private keys. Keep a small test transfer as an option when moving a larger balance, especially if you have not used the address before. A transfer sent through an incompatible network or to an address you cannot access may be difficult or impossible to recover.

Do not confuse XEM with XYM, Symbol’s native token. Check the asset name and network shown in the wallet or exchange confirmation, not just the ticker. Exchange support can change, so verify deposits and withdrawals are currently enabled before sending.

How much XEM exists, and how easy is it to trade?

NEM’s reported circulating and total supply are both 8,999,999,999 XEM. No maximum supply is specified in the supplied token facts, so don’t treat the total amount shown today as proof of a published supply cap. Supply figures can also be presented differently across services, so check what a platform means by circulating, total and maximum supply.

Market figures can change quickly. As of 2026-11-08, XEM’s market capitalisation was about $2.9 million and its reported 24-hour trading volume was about $125,500. These figures are a snapshot, not a guarantee that you can sell a particular amount at a displayed price. With a relatively small market, order size, trading venue and available liquidity can affect the price you actually receive.

If you are considering a transaction, check the live market and the specific exchange’s withdrawal and trading status first. A historical price or a market-cap figure does not tell you whether there will be enough buyers when you want to trade.

How can you store XEM, and what could go wrong?

Keep XEM in a wallet that supports the NEM network and protect the recovery phrase offline. Never share it with someone claiming they need it to validate, migrate or unlock your coins. If you use an exchange, the service controls the keys; that may be convenient, but it adds account, custody and withdrawal risks. Check whether you can withdraw XEM before leaving a balance there.

NEM launched in 2015, so check that the wallet software, network connection and exchange support you plan to use are maintained and compatible. Before moving your full balance, confirm the network and address, then consider testing with a small amount. Keep your device updated and beware of fake wallet downloads and support messages.

XEM can lose value sharply, and smaller-market assets may be harder to trade at your intended price. Network or service support can also change. Don’t rely on PoI or historical use as a promise of future rewards or demand, and avoid keeping funds somewhere you cannot independently verify access to them.

By the numbers

NEM in numbers

NEM (XEM) is ranked #2,061 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $2.88M and a price of $0.0003196 as of Nov 8, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation ($2.88M) is close to its market cap, so little new supply is still to come.

The price was down 5.8% over 7 days, down 43.0% over 30 days, down 73.4% over the past year. It trades about 100% below its all-time high of $1.87, set on Jan 6, 2018.

XEM FAQs

What is XEM used for?

XEM is the native cryptocurrency of the NEM blockchain. It is used for transfers and network fees, and NEM supports features such as mosaics, namespaces and multisignature accounts.

Which network does XEM use?

XEM belongs to the NEM network, so use a wallet or exchange that explicitly supports NEM mainnet. Check the network and address details before sending; a ticker match alone is not enough.

What is the maximum supply of XEM?

The reported circulating and total supply are both 8,999,999,999 XEM. No maximum supply is specified in the token facts, so that figure should not be treated as a confirmed cap.

Does holding XEM earn rewards?

NEM uses Proof of Importance, which is designed to consider on-chain activity as well as holdings. Don’t assume that simply holding XEM earns a fixed return; check current network rules and conditions.

Is XEM the same as Symbol’s XYM?

No. XEM is associated with NEM, while XYM is Symbol’s native token. Check the asset and network carefully before depositing or withdrawing.

What is the market cap of NEM?

As of Nov 8, 2026, NEM had a market cap of about $2.88M, ranking #2,061 among cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation. Market cap is price multiplied by circulating supply, so it moves with the price.

What is the all-time high of XEM?
