What can you use Bitcoin Gold for?

Bitcoin Gold (BTG) is a separate cryptocurrency created by forking Bitcoin in 2017. Its main purpose was to make mining more accessible to people using graphics cards, rather than relying on the specialized ASIC machines used to mine Bitcoin. BTG uses the Equihash proof-of-work algorithm, but that design goal does not guarantee that mining is profitable or that mining power is widely distributed today.

You can use BTG for transfers on its own network and, where supported, for trading or other services. It is not Bitcoin (BTC), and a BTG transfer does not move BTC. The project’s mining philosophy is the clearest use case described; do not assume that BTG gives you access to particular apps, payment services or other features unless the provider explicitly supports it.

Which network and wallet should you use for BTG?

BTG runs on the Bitcoin Gold network, a separate proof-of-work blockchain. It is not simply a token issued on Bitcoin, Ethereum or another network. When sending or receiving, choose a wallet and network that explicitly support Bitcoin Gold, and check that the receiving service accepts BTG deposits on that network. Addresses or assets with similar names on other networks are not substitutes.

Before moving a substantial amount, confirm the address format and network in both the sending and receiving wallets. A small test transfer can help catch a mismatch, though it still incurs any applicable transaction costs. For storage, compare software wallets with hardware wallets that explicitly support BTG; hardware devices do not support every coin automatically. Keep your recovery phrase offline, private and backed up securely. Never enter it into a website or share it with someone claiming to provide wallet support.

How many BTG coins are there?

Bitcoin Gold has a maximum supply of 21 million BTG. As of July 27, 2026, the reported circulating supply and total supply were both about 17.5 million BTG. These figures describe the coin supply, not how many coins are available to trade or how much you could sell without affecting the price.

A stated maximum does not make BTG scarce in a way that ensures value: demand, market liquidity and confidence in the network also matter. The reported 24-hour trading volume was unavailable on that date, so you should check current trading activity and the order book on the exchange you use before placing an order. Prices and supply figures can change, and an exchange’s displayed balance or trading volume may differ from figures shown elsewhere.

What risks should you check before holding BTG?

BTG carries the risks of a small, proof-of-work cryptocurrency. Its price can move sharply, and limited trading activity can make it harder to trade at the price you expect. Bitcoin Gold has also experienced 51% attacks in the past, a type of attack that can reorganize recent transactions and enable double-spending. That history is a reason to check current network and exchange deposit conditions; it does not establish the network’s present security.

Protect yourself by verifying the network and address before every transfer, securing your wallet recovery phrase offline, and avoiding links or messages asking you to disclose it. Keep records of transactions and check whether your exchange has paused BTG deposits or requires additional confirmations. A transaction shown in your wallet is not the same as an exchange credit, and confirmation policies can differ. Do not treat the maximum supply or the original mining goal as a guarantee of safety, liquidity or future value.

By the numbers

Bitcoin Gold in numbers

BTG FAQs

Is Bitcoin Gold the same as Bitcoin?

No. Bitcoin Gold is a separate cryptocurrency with its own blockchain, ticker and wallet support requirements. A BTG address or transfer is not interchangeable with BTC.

Can you mine Bitcoin Gold with a GPU?

BTG is designed for mining using the Equihash proof-of-work algorithm, with the original aim of supporting GPU mining. That design does not guarantee mining is profitable or that mining power is evenly distributed today.

What is the maximum supply of BTG?

The maximum supply is 21 million BTG. About 17.5 million BTG were reported as circulating and total supply on July 27, 2026; supply figures can change.

Which wallet can hold Bitcoin Gold?

Use a wallet that explicitly supports Bitcoin Gold and check that it is set to the Bitcoin Gold network. Keep your recovery phrase offline and never share it; a wallet device or app may support some coins but not others.

Is Bitcoin Gold safe to hold?

BTG has risks including price volatility, potentially limited liquidity and a history of 51% attacks. Check current network conditions and your exchange’s confirmation requirements before transferring it.

What is the market cap of Bitcoin Gold?

As of Jul 27, 2026, Bitcoin Gold had a market cap of about $4.09M, ranking #1,808 among cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation. Market cap is price multiplied by circulating supply, so it moves with the price.

What is the all-time high of BTG?

Bitcoin Gold's all-time high is $456.25, reached on Dec 19, 2017. Its all-time low is $0.1224 (Mar 24, 2025). Past prices say nothing about future returns.

What is the circulating supply of BTG?

As of Jul 27, 2026, about 17.51M BTG were in circulation, against a maximum supply of 21M.
