Mellow Restaking Review: Is It Right for You?

Mellow is modular vault infrastructure for DeFi yield programs, including restaking strategies. It is built mainly for platforms and curators; check each vault’s strategy, risks and fees before depositing.

By the SkyBitcoins review team · Updated

Quick take

Mellow suits platforms building branded yield products and experienced DeFi users choosing individual vaults. Its main draw is configurable onchain infrastructure with granular permissions, strategy isolation and emergency controls. It is not a single, simple restaking product: vault strategies, fees and withdrawal conditions can differ. Before depositing, inspect the exact vault’s underlying assets, risks, charges and redemption process, and only commit funds you can afford to lose.

Is it for you?

Who Mellow Restaking suits

Good for

  • Exchanges, wallets and fintechs adding branded yield products
  • Institutional teams configuring onchain vaults and risk permissions
  • Experienced DeFi users who can assess a vault’s strategy and withdrawal terms

Not for

  • Beginners seeking a simple, guaranteed-yield savings product
  • Users who need a published, universal fee schedule or withdrawal timeline
  • People who cannot afford losses from smart-contract, strategy or market risks

What can you actually do with Mellow?

Mellow is best understood as infrastructure for building and operating yield vaults, rather than one fixed restaking product. Its stated audience includes exchanges, wallets, custodians, fintechs and other platforms that want to offer yield under their own brand. Curators can configure strategies and manage positions; depositors can explore vaults through the Mellow app.

The protocol describes vaults that can connect to DeFi protocols and centralized venues, combining yield sources under configurable rules. Its materials also cover liquid restaking, but the strategy and assets available depend on the particular vault. Do not assume every vault holds the same liquid staking or restaking tokens, or has the same risk profile.

Mellow says it has more than 60 live vaults and more than 50 partners. Those are figures the project publishes, not a promise that every vault is open to every depositor. Check that the vault is active, which assets it accepts and whether its strategy makes sense to you before connecting a wallet.

What could a Mellow vault cost you?

Mellow does not publish a general fee schedule in its main product description. It says platforms running earn programs can earn fees, but that does not tell depositors what a particular vault charges or how those charges are calculated. Review the vault’s own terms and app display before you deposit, and look for management, performance, withdrawal or other charges.

Using onchain vaults can also involve network transaction costs. These vary with the chain and network conditions, and are separate from any vault-level charges. If a strategy routes assets through other protocols or venues, those may have their own costs or risks as well.

Compare the expected yield with the full cost and the strategy’s risks; an advertised estimate is not a guaranteed return. Mellow’s homepage does not provide a universal yield figure or fee breakdown. If the vault does not clearly show the charges and how returns are calculated, ask the curator or platform before depositing rather than assuming the headline yield is what you will receive.

What protections does Mellow offer—and what remains risky?

Mellow describes onchain permissions, separation between vault owners and curators, and controls that can limit actions by vault, strategy or operation. It also says vaults can have emergency pauses, multisig controls and timelocked parameter changes. Subvault isolation is intended to contain a strategy failure rather than spread it across allocations. These are risk-management features, not proof that a vault cannot lose money.

The project says independent security reviews are public and that its core vault source code is open for review. A third-party listing shows no audits, so verify the actual review reports for the contracts you will use; do not assume every vault or integration has been assessed. A review is also not a guarantee against bugs, compromised keys, oracle failures or losses in underlying strategies.

Mellow’s homepage does not identify a licence for the service or publish a universal custody guarantee. Treat deposits as exposed to smart-contract and strategy risk, and check who controls the vault’s permissions and emergency actions. Use only funds you can afford to lose.

How do you access Mellow vaults?

Mellow presents two routes: institutions can request a demo and integrate through a REST API, while depositors can explore vaults in the app. Its documentation includes core vault concepts and API and integration material. The project also describes a CLI for curators and programmatic vault access. This makes the infrastructure more suited to teams and users comfortable with DeFi mechanics than to someone looking for a one-click savings account.

The listed chains are Ethereum, BNB Chain, Fraxtal, Lisk and Monad, but support for a network does not mean every vault is available there. Confirm the exact chain and accepted asset in the selected vault. You will generally need a compatible wallet and enough of the network’s native token to cover transaction costs when interacting onchain.

Mellow does not publish a general KYC policy, mobile-app specification or universal speed guarantee. Vault deposits and redemptions can follow different rules, including queues. Check the app’s current instructions and the vault’s redemption terms before moving funds in.

Where does Mellow fall short for depositors?

The main limitation is that Mellow is infrastructure, not a single standardized product with one clear yield, fee, withdrawal schedule or risk level. Those details can vary by vault and curator. The project’s institutional focus may also make the experience less straightforward for retail users, even though it offers vaults for depositors to explore.

Before depositing, examine the vault’s assets, strategy, permission settings, available security reviews, charges and redemption mechanics. Check whether the strategy involves restaking, lending, trading or other exposures, and understand that yield can change and losses are possible. Do not rely on the protocol’s general safeguards as a substitute for reviewing the specific vault.

Mellow’s published materials do not provide a universal KYC or licensing statement, nor a broad, standardized withdrawal timeline. If you need those details, get them from the platform or curator operating the vault before you commit. A vault that does not clearly explain how you exit or what you pay is one to avoid until those terms are clear.
