Owning XCP: Uses, Storage and Risks
XCP powers functions in Counterparty, a protocol for creating and trading digital assets on Bitcoin. If you hold it, you need a Counterparty-compatible wallet and should account for Bitcoin fees, thin trading and protocol-specific risks.

## What does holding XCP let you do?
XCP is Counterparty’s protocol token, used for functions that need a working unit other than Bitcoin. Counterparty lets people issue and trade their own digital assets using Bitcoin transactions, with protocol rules interpreting additional transaction data. XCP is not the same as the user-created assets you may encounter on Counterparty: owning XCP does not give you ownership of those assets, a share in a company, or a claim on project revenue.
The protocol has also used XCP for activities such as bets and other features that Bitcoin itself does not provide. Before using XCP for a specific Counterparty function, check that the wallet and service support that function and that you understand its costs. Bitcoin transaction fees are separate from the XCP balance you use within the protocol.
## Which chain is XCP on, and what wallet do you need?
Counterparty operates on Bitcoin; XCP is not the native coin of a separate Counterparty blockchain. Counterparty activity is recorded through Bitcoin transactions that carry protocol data, so you need a wallet or interface that understands Counterparty—not just one that can send and receive ordinary BTC. A regular Bitcoin wallet may not show your XCP balance or Counterparty assets, even when they are associated with one of its Bitcoin addresses.
You also need BTC to pay Bitcoin network transaction fees when you make on-chain moves. Those fees can vary with network demand and are not the same as protocol charges. Counterparty’s design inherits Bitcoin’s settlement and security properties, but it also inherits Bitcoin’s congestion, confirmation times and fee changes. Check that a wallet supports XCP and the particular Counterparty action you want before sending funds or signing a transaction.
## How much XCP is in circulation?
As of 2026-11-08, Counterparty’s reported circulating supply is about 2.59 million XCP, with total supply around 2.65 million. A maximum supply is not specified in the token data, so don’t assume that XCP has a fixed cap. Supply figures can differ depending on how a tracker counts circulating tokens and protocol balances; check the amount shown by a Counterparty-compatible wallet before making a transaction.
XCP has traded at substantially different prices over its history. On the same date, its reported 24-hour trading volume was about $683, a small figure that points to limited market activity. Thin trading can make it harder to buy or sell at a desired price, and a quoted price may not reflect what a larger order would receive. Treat prices and supply snapshots as time-sensitive rather than guarantees of what you can trade or access.
## How can you store XCP without losing access?
To hold XCP, use a wallet that explicitly supports Counterparty balances and transactions. Confirm that you have the correct Bitcoin address and that the wallet can display XCP before transferring funds. A Bitcoin address alone is not enough to ensure that an ordinary wallet will recognize or manage Counterparty assets. Keep your recovery phrase or private keys offline and private; anyone with access to them may be able to move the assets associated with the wallet.
For a transfer, check the destination address, asset name, amount and transaction details in the Counterparty-capable interface. Send a small test amount first if you are unsure, while accounting for the extra Bitcoin fee. Never share a recovery phrase with a support agent or enter it into a site reached through an unsolicited message. If a wallet does not clearly support Counterparty, don’t use it to manage XCP.
## What could go wrong when you hold or use XCP?
XCP carries both protocol and market risks. Counterparty is an older Bitcoin-based asset platform, and competition from token systems on other networks may limit demand for its tools. The reported trading volume was about $683 as of 2026-11-08, so liquidity may be thin; a sale can be difficult or may execute at a worse price than expected. These conditions can change, and past prices do not indicate future performance.
There are also practical risks. Bitcoin fees can rise, transactions can take time to confirm, and mistakes in addresses or transaction settings may be difficult or impossible to reverse. Counterparty assets are user-created, so an asset’s name or description alone does not establish its value or legitimacy. Check what a particular asset represents and whether you trust its issuer. Keep enough BTC for network fees, and don’t rely on a wallet or service until you have verified that it supports the Counterparty action you need.
By the numbers

Counterparty (XCP) is ranked #1,083 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $12.5M and a price of $4.85 as of Nov 8, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation ($12.9M) is close to its market cap, so little new supply is still to come.
The price was up 12.9% over 7 days, up 9.5% over 30 days, up 58.9% over the past year. It trades about 95% below its all-time high of $91.13, set on Jan 9, 2018.
About 2.59M XCP are in circulation, from a total supply of 2.65M. No hard maximum supply is listed.
24-hour trading volume was about $683, or 0.0% of its market cap: low turnover, so large orders can move the price.

XCP FAQs
What is XCP used for?
XCP is Counterparty’s protocol token, while Counterparty users can also issue separate digital assets. Holding XCP does not automatically give you ownership of those assets or a claim on a project’s revenue.
Is XCP a Bitcoin token?
Counterparty operates through Bitcoin transactions, so XCP is associated with the Bitcoin network rather than a separate Counterparty chain. You need a wallet or interface that supports Counterparty to manage its balances and functions.
Which wallet can hold XCP?
Use a wallet that explicitly supports Counterparty; an ordinary Bitcoin wallet may not display or manage XCP. Check compatibility before transferring, and keep your recovery phrase private and offline.
How many XCP tokens are there?
The reported circulating supply was about 2.59 million XCP as of 2026-11-08, and total supply was about 2.65 million. A maximum supply is not specified in the token data.
Do you need BTC to use XCP?
Yes. You need BTC for Bitcoin network transaction fees, and those fees can vary with network demand. XCP is used for Counterparty functions and is separate from those Bitcoin fees.
What is the market cap of Counterparty?
As of Nov 8, 2026, Counterparty had a market cap of about $12.5M, ranking #1,083 among cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation. Market cap is price multiplied by circulating supply, so it moves with the price.
What is the all-time high of XCP?
Counterparty's all-time high is $91.13, reached on Jan 9, 2018. Its all-time low is $0.1344 (Oct 25, 2019). Past prices say nothing about future returns.
What is the circulating supply of XCP?
As of Nov 8, 2026, about 2.59M XCP were in circulation; no fixed maximum supply is listed.
