What does holding Mintlayer (ML) give you?
Mintlayer describes itself as a Bitcoin-focused layer 2 protocol intended to support DeFi, smart contracts, tokenized assets, NFTs and decentralized applications. Its project description highlights atomic swaps between native Bitcoin and assets issued on Mintlayer, without wrapped Bitcoin or a federated token. These are protocol aims and features; they do not mean that holding ML gives you Bitcoin, access to a particular application or a share of project revenue.
The project description does not clearly specify what ML holders must use the token for. It mentions that Mintlayer users can choose among tokens to pay transaction fees, but that alone does not establish that ML is required for fees, staking, governance or any other benefit. Check the current Mintlayer documentation and the rules of the specific app before treating ML as a pass to use a service or as an income-producing asset.
Which network should you use for ML?
ML is listed as issued on Ethereum, while Mintlayer is designed as a separate Bitcoin-focused protocol. Treat those as distinct networks: sending an Ethereum-issued ML token to a Mintlayer address, or sending it to an exchange that supports ML only on another network, can result in a lost transfer. Before depositing or withdrawing, check the network and token contract shown by the service you are using, and make sure both ends support the same one.
For self-custody, use a wallet that explicitly supports the Ethereum token contract for ML. Do not rely on the ticker alone—other tokens can use the same symbol. Mintlayer documentation refers to wallets for its blockchain, but that does not automatically mean a particular wallet supports the Ethereum-issued token. Confirm support in the wallet’s own asset list or documentation before transferring funds.
How much ML exists, and what can supply tell you?
As of 2026-11-08, about 386.3 million ML were circulating, with 400 million total and a stated maximum supply of 600 million. The gap between total and maximum supply means the maximum is not the same as the amount currently circulating. These figures do not, by themselves, tell you when or how any remaining tokens may enter circulation; check the project’s current tokenomics for release schedules and allocations.
Market figures can change quickly. On that date, ML’s market capitalization was about $1.6 million, and its fully diluted valuation was about $1.7 million. Those are snapshots, not guarantees of what you could sell your tokens for. A small market can make trading prices more sensitive to individual orders, and quoted prices may differ across venues. Avoid treating past prices or a supply figure as a reliable guide to future value.
How can you store ML without making a costly mistake?
If you keep ML in a wallet, protect the recovery phrase or private keys offline and never share them with someone claiming they need to validate, unlock or migrate your tokens. A legitimate support agent should not need your recovery phrase. Consider a hardware wallet if you hold an amount that warrants the extra setup, and test any new wallet or transfer process with a small amount first.
Before approving a transaction, read the wallet prompt and check the network, token and destination address. A token approval can give a contract permission to move assets, so avoid signing requests you do not understand and review or revoke old approvals when appropriate. Keep wallet software up to date, but only install it from a source you have independently verified. If you use an exchange for custody, secure the account with unique credentials and strong authentication, and check its withdrawal network before moving ML.
What could go wrong if you hold or use ML?
ML carries both token-market and project risks. Its market value can fall sharply, trading may be thin, and the token’s stated maximum supply is larger than the current circulating amount. Mintlayer’s planned Bitcoin DeFi features also depend on the protocol, applications and infrastructure being built and maintained; a project description is not proof that a feature is widely used, secure or available to you.
Bitcoin-linked swaps and smart-contract applications can introduce technical, liquidity and operational risks even when a design aims to avoid intermediaries or wrapped assets. Bugs, compromised keys, failed integrations or changes in project development can affect access and value. Do not assume that ML is insured, audited or backed by Bitcoin; verify any security claims and the exact terms of an application before connecting a wallet or committing assets. Only risk funds you can afford to lose.
By the numbers
Mintlayer in numbers
Mintlayer (ML) is ranked #2,580 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $1.61M and a price of $0.004166 as of Nov 8, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation ($1.67M) is close to its market cap, so little new supply is still to come.
The price was down 17.2% over 7 days, down 25.5% over 30 days, down 76.9% over the past year. It trades about 100% below its all-time high of $0.9883, set on Jan 10, 2024.
About 386.27M ML are in circulation out of a maximum supply of 600M (64% issued).
24-hour trading volume was about $98.8K, or 6.1% of its market cap: moderate turnover.
ML has token contracts on Ethereum. Always check the contract address before buying or bridging: copycat tokens often reuse a well-known name and ticker.

ML FAQs
What is Mintlayer (ML) used for?
Mintlayer presents itself as a Bitcoin-focused layer 2 for DeFi, tokenized assets, smart contracts and related applications. Its project description does not clearly state which functions ML holders must use the token for, so do not assume it guarantees access, rewards or governance rights.
Is ML an Ethereum token or a Bitcoin token?
ML is listed as issued on Ethereum. Mintlayer itself is designed as a separate Bitcoin-focused protocol, so check the network supported by your wallet or exchange before sending tokens.
What is the maximum supply of ML?
As of 2026-11-08, about 386.3 million ML were circulating, 400 million were listed as total supply, and the maximum supply was 600 million. These amounts can change, and the maximum does not indicate when additional tokens may circulate.
Which wallet can hold ML?
Use a wallet that explicitly supports the Ethereum-issued ML token, and verify the token contract rather than relying on the ticker. Keep your recovery phrase private and check the network and destination before every transfer.
Does holding ML give you Bitcoin or guaranteed rewards?
Mintlayer describes atomic swaps between native Bitcoin and Mintlayer assets, but any application can carry technical, liquidity and operational risks. Verify the specific app’s security and terms; holding ML does not itself guarantee Bitcoin, yield or protection from losses.
What is the market cap of Mintlayer?
As of Nov 8, 2026, Mintlayer had a market cap of about $1.61M, ranking #2,580 among cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation. Market cap is price multiplied by circulating supply, so it moves with the price.
What is the all-time high of ML?
Mintlayer's all-time high is $0.9883, reached on Jan 10, 2024. Its all-time low is $0.004001 (Nov 7, 2026). Past prices say nothing about future returns.
What is the circulating supply of ML?
As of Nov 8, 2026, about 386.27M ML were in circulation, against a maximum supply of 600M.
Which blockchains is ML on?
It has token contracts on Ethereum.
