## What can you use HNS for?

Handshake (HNS) is the native coin of a decentralized naming network. The project aims to let network participants manage a root zone for internet names rather than relying entirely on centralized naming authorities. Its main practical use is bidding for top-level names, such as alternative endings to familiar domains. Handshake uses auctions for these names, with HNS used to place bids.

Owning HNS does not automatically give you a domain name. You need to take part in the naming process and secure a name under the network’s rules. Nor does a Handshake name necessarily work in an ordinary browser by default: compatible software or resolution services may be needed. If you are considering HNS for a naming project, check that the tools your intended users rely on can resolve the name.

HNS is therefore tied to an infrastructure experiment, not a general-purpose payment token. Its usefulness depends on whether people adopt Handshake names and the supporting software. A name’s possible value or usability is not guaranteed just because you hold HNS.

## Which network and wallet do you need for HNS?

HNS runs on the Handshake network; it is not an Ethereum or other EVM token. When you move it, use a wallet or exchange that explicitly supports HNS on Handshake. An address or deposit network for another asset with a similar ticker is not interchangeable, and sending to an unsupported network can make funds difficult or impossible to recover.

Before choosing a wallet, check that it can receive and send HNS, that you can back up its recovery phrase or keys, and that you understand how to restore access. If you use an exchange, confirm the withdrawal network and address format shown for HNS before sending. Exchange support can change, so verify it at the time of a transfer.

No particular wallet is necessary to understand the token, and a wallet that only supports Bitcoin or Ethereum should not be assumed to support Handshake. For larger holdings, consider keeping keys in a wallet you control rather than leaving the balance on an exchange, while remembering that self-custody also makes you responsible for backups and key security.

## How much HNS is there?

Handshake has a listed maximum supply of about 961.3 million HNS. As of 2026-11-08, about 678.2 million were circulating, against a total supply of about 678.25 million. These figures describe token supply, not the number of names registered or how many people use the network.

HNS is associated with mining on the Handshake blockchain: miners compete to add blocks and receive newly issued tokens. The listed maximum is not the same as the amount currently circulating, and supply figures can change as tokens enter circulation. Check the latest network and market data if the exact amount matters to a decision.

A capped supply does not guarantee demand, liquidity or a stable price. HNS’s market value can move sharply, and a small market can make it harder to trade at a price close to a quoted estimate. Treat the supply cap as one property of the token, not as evidence that its price will rise or that it will be easy to sell.

## How can you store HNS more safely?

To hold HNS yourself, use a wallet that supports the Handshake network and keep its recovery phrase or private keys offline and private. Anyone who gets those credentials may be able to move your coins. Never share them with a person claiming they need them to verify, restore or release your HNS.

Make a backup before transferring a substantial amount. Store it somewhere secure and separate from your device, and make sure you know how to restore the wallet. A small test transfer can help confirm that you have selected the correct network and address before you move a larger balance. Be cautious of unsolicited wallet downloads, fake support accounts and links asking you to connect or sign transactions.

If you keep HNS on an exchange, the exchange controls the keys and may restrict withdrawals or become unavailable. Self-custody avoids that specific dependence but leaves you responsible for device security and backups. Neither option removes the risks of theft, mistakes or a loss of access.

## What could go wrong if you hold HNS?

HNS combines the usual crypto risks with adoption risk specific to its naming system. The project is an experiment in decentralized internet naming; there is no guarantee that browsers, internet services or users will adopt it widely. A Handshake name may be difficult to use if the services people need do not support it.

You can also lose funds by sending HNS over the wrong network, entering an incorrect address, losing your keys or approving a malicious transaction. Domain-name auctions add another risk: bidding does not guarantee that a name will be useful to you, and a name’s resale value is uncertain. Check the auction rules and name-management requirements before committing coins.

Liquidity is another concern. As of 2026-11-08, reported 24-hour trading volume was about $100, a small amount that can make trading difficult and prices less reliable. Market figures change, and low activity can leave you with fewer options when you want to trade. Do not treat a supply limit or a past price as protection against loss.

By the numbers

Handshake in numbers

Handshake (HNS) is ranked #2,402 by market capitalisation, with a market cap of about $1.94M and a price of $0.002861 as of Nov 8, 2026. Its fully diluted valuation ($1.94M) is close to its market cap, so little new supply is still to come.

The price was down 8.6% over 7 days, down 71.0% over 30 days, down 26.6% over the past year. It trades about 100% below its all-time high of $0.8519, set on May 5, 2021.

About 678.23M HNS are in circulation out of a maximum supply of 961.27M (71% issued).

24-hour trading volume was about $100, or 0.0% of its market cap: low turnover, so large orders can move the price.

What is HNS used for?

HNS is the native coin of the Handshake network. It is used to bid for top-level names in Handshake’s naming system.

Is HNS an Ethereum token?

No. HNS runs on Handshake, not Ethereum. Use a wallet or exchange that explicitly supports HNS on the Handshake network.

What is the maximum supply of HNS?

The listed maximum supply is about 961.3 million HNS. About 678.2 million were circulating as of 2026-11-08; supply figures can change.

How do you store HNS safely?

Use a wallet that supports Handshake, back up its recovery phrase or keys securely, and never share them. Check the network and address before sending, since a transfer to an unsupported network may not be recoverable.

Will a Handshake domain work in a regular browser?

Not necessarily. Handshake names may need compatible software or resolution services, so check that the tools your intended users rely on can resolve them.
