Do you need Bitcoin payments or recurring crypto pay?

These products are not interchangeable. Lightning Network is for sending Bitcoin through payment channels. It can suit frequent payments when you want to avoid settling each transfer on-chain, but you need a Lightning-compatible wallet and a route with enough liquidity. Payments are not guaranteed to succeed just because both sides use Bitcoin.

LlamaPay is for setting up recurring crypto payments. A payer creates a stream for a recipient, and the recipient can withdraw the amount accrued so far. It supports more than 20 EVM networks, but you must check that the exact token and contract are supported on your chosen chain.

Choose Lightning for Bitcoin payments. Choose LlamaPay when you want crypto pay to accrue continuously rather than send each payment manually. If you need a conventional payroll provider, neither product should be assumed to supply one.

What will each payment option cost you?

Lightning has no single fee schedule. You may pay a routing fee, and the wallet or service can set additional charges. Opening or closing a channel may also require an on-chain Bitcoin transaction, with a fee that changes with network demand. Check the wallet’s quote and the full amount before confirming.

LlamaPay does not publish a clear project fee schedule. Creating or managing a stream requires blockchain transactions, so you pay gas on the selected network; a recipient may also need gas to withdraw. The cost depends on the chain and transaction conditions. A claim that stream deployment is cheaper does not establish what your particular stream will cost.

Neither gives you a universal price to rely on. Before committing funds, review the transaction preview, wallet terms and any app charge. For a long-running LlamaPay stream, account for future gas and the need to keep the stream funded.

Which risks should you check before funding either one?

Lightning does not have one company holding everyone’s funds. Its channel model uses Bitcoin transactions and scripts to enforce balances, but your practical protection depends on your wallet. A custodial wallet puts access in the provider’s hands; with self-custody, you are responsible for keys, backups and channel recovery. Read the wallet’s recovery instructions before funding it. Two audits are listed for Lightning, but their scope is not specified here, so do not treat that count as a guarantee for every wallet or setup.

LlamaPay relies on smart contracts and the network they run on. Two audits are listed, including a report for LlamaPay V2, but you should verify that the review applies to the exact version and chain you intend to use. An audit cannot eliminate code risk. LlamaPay does not publish a clear licensing status or detailed custody explanation, so do not assume it has the protections of a regulated payment provider.

Which is easier to set up and use?

Lightning takes more wallet-level judgment: you need a compatible wallet, must decide between custodial and self-custody, and should understand its backup and channel recovery process. Channel liquidity and payment routing can affect whether a transfer works. This setup can be worthwhile if you make regular Bitcoin payments and are comfortable checking those details.

LlamaPay is built around an EVM wallet and a web interface. The payer enters the recipient, token amount and payment frequency, then starts the stream with a blockchain transaction. The recipient can claim accrued funds. That workflow may be more straightforward for recurring contributor payments, but you still need to check token support, the network, approval requests and the destination address. Anyone able to trigger a claim does not remove the need to verify where funds will go.

For either product, check the transaction details before signing. A familiar interface does not remove the risk of choosing the wrong network, recipient or contract.

Verdict: Lightning Network or LlamaPay?

Pick Lightning Network if you want to make frequent Bitcoin payments through channels and are prepared to choose a wallet, check its custody model and understand recovery. Pick LlamaPay if you need recurring crypto payments that accrue continuously for workers or contributors, and you are comfortable managing EVM transactions, gas and smart-contract risk. Lightning is not a payroll tool, and LlamaPay is not a Bitcoin payment network. Compare the wallet or contract, supported assets and transaction costs for your specific use before funding either.

Frequently asked questions

Are Lightning Network and LlamaPay direct alternatives?

No. Lightning Network is a protocol for routing Bitcoin payments through channels, while LlamaPay streams recurring crypto payments on EVM networks. Choose based on whether you need to send Bitcoin or automate ongoing payments.

Which one gives you custody of your funds?

Lightning uses Bitcoin, but whether you control the keys depends on the wallet you choose. With LlamaPay, funds are handled through smart contracts; check the exact contract, token and network before funding a stream.

Which is cheaper to use?

Neither has one universal fee schedule. Lightning costs can include routing and Bitcoin on-chain fees; LlamaPay charges gas for transactions, and its project fee schedule is not published.

Are both audited?

Both list two audits, but that does not guarantee safety. For LlamaPay, verify that an audit covers the exact contract version and chain you plan to use; for Lightning, wallet security and recovery arrangements matter.
